New Custom Rotary Emblem/ Badge

Final design on second page of post

'm considering finding a place that can make these, provided there's a demand.
I was thinking of making it out of ABS and then just vacuum metalizing them or leaving it black to be painted, whatever. Anyone interested?

Nice! Make the middle rotor filled in and then it will look much better.

bruce_van 06-06-2008 09:26 AM

I really like the design. Just one idea:

How about varying the thickness of the lines? Thicker circle. And make the inside lines taper as it meets to make the rotary shape.

Kudos.

Angry Bunny 06-06-2008 12:59 PM

Yes I had considered filling in the center, something like these maybe, and yes to anyone who comments I am aware it says rx7 and that badge was a special edition RX7 only etc.etc.
Regarding the varying widths I will experiment with that. Please remember this thing is intended to be chrome and will stand out plenty.

y r u an angry bunny?

Angry Bunny 06-06-2008 01:52 PM

Angry bunny refers to a titanium rx8 with a white license plate. The car when it first came out was compared to a pissed off Bugs Bunny (see my avatar, the white license plate being bugs front teeth.) You might also find reference to an angry guppy. However since mine is titanium I went with bunny. Any more questions?

dillsrotary 06-06-2008 02:08 PM

^have you pressed charges against this guy yet?

For what? Stupidity with a deadly weapon? The bunny always won pal.

(Don't put a link to the family guy episode, don't do it. Don't be that guy.)

Did you see the badge proposition would you like to maybe comment on that?

Interesting.

Lil_Gato 06-07-2008 02:02 AM

Ive got an old school rotary emblem on my back window, then again its just a sticker... some wierdo thought it had something to do with drugs.

But yeah looks just this but with the a rotor shape surrounding it. and also its red.

The lines need to have more depth, taper, make it less two dimensional.....but even then I'd think it is sorta hokey......I mean the Mazda symbol is fine, it is as good or better than the emblems of Toyota, Lexus etc, and 1,000 times better than the emblems of Ford, Honda, Chevy, etc.

Angry Bunny 06-07-2008 02:54 AM

The 2d render does not do it justice, I am going to make it taller though it's currently 1/8" and I'm changing it to 3/16."

Hokey? Didn't see that one coming.

Nubo 06-07-2008 03:17 AM

The example on the red 8 in the first pic, is perfect. Nice design. Way better than the current "flying M"

No offense intended.

Personally, I think it is a great design..............I just think it needs more depth added to it to make it more 3-D.

It is just something I would not want on my 8, too hokey for me, but if I saw it on someone elses car (with more depth), I would think it was rather cool. I know that is sort of a contradiction.

Like I said I think the Mazda symbol is okay as it is...........but if the Mazda emblem was horrible, I would be all over this.

However to do the depth I am thinking it would probably make the design more complicated and thus more expensive.

Changing to 3/16 will help with the depth.

Is the top surface going to be flat? Or will it be finished with a /\ pitch to it like the current emplem?

try making the rotor more promenant in the design it gets lost being so small.... heres a quick 5min solidworks example of all the suggestions Ive read in this thread....

05rex8 06-07-2008 01:50 PM

^now that I like

if the tapering of the outside lines was more dramatic and the sides of the rotor were curved a little more accurately, i think it would be completely done.

yeah probably wouldve gone in a more dramatic direction, again that was a five min quicky, I m actually working on one that harkens back to the mazda emblem 10yrs ago or so,,,,, stay tuned for that, but Ive already done too much thread jacking here,,, apologies AngryBunny

I would buy that tonight.

I would buy the first one tonight too.

foo77 06-08-2008 12:38 AM

nice :icon_tup: make sure to fill up the emblem hole with it :)

ShAdOwFoX 06-08-2008 06:31 PM

looks good :icon_tup:

Angry Bunny 06-09-2008 12:29 AM

Done.

Don't let the pictures fool you it's only 4 inches wide and 3/8 inches tall.

Anybody know how far apart the flying M pins are?

05rex8 06-09-2008 11:31 PM

I like it, looks great! Good job

Silver_Mazda09 06-10-2008 06:47 AM

hmmm....interesting.

sektor9 06-24-2008 03:48 PM

i like it any more progress with it?

Nopstnz8 06-24-2008 09:43 PM

I would love to buy one once it's finished and possibly has a logo filling in the middle.

Angry Bunny 06-25-2008 02:41 PM

The company I asked for a build quote from never got back to me I'm looking for someone else to make it, I don't have the time to, if anybody has access to a five axis machine I'll give you the CAD (as long as you build me 2 of them)

Socket7 06-25-2008 04:21 PM

I want one. I second the idea of filing in the rotor to make it look more like a real one, with a hole in the center for the E-shaft and and the gear around said hole.

Angry Bunny 06-25-2008 04:35 PM

I 'll discuss that with the new company i found, keep in mind that this thing is only 4 inches wide adding to much detail just might not be noticeable.

Socket7 06-25-2008 05:23 PM

you make an excellent point and I actually want 2, not one.

Angry Bunny 06-30-2008 05:08 PM

The company wants $950 for a prototype, looks like I have some cutting and filing to do.

Rotr8 06-30-2008 05:20 PM

yah you have to realize that 'one off' pieces are expensive. The initial setup for the tooling takes time. The only way to cut down on cost is to produce and sell a large manufacturing run. I work at a percision machine shop and rapid prototyping facility for the army,,,Most people have sticker shock when they go to do these types of things, and they dont realize that the company has to make back the half milliion dollars that most of the machines cost... $950 is nothing when you think about it, your paying for someone to sit down for a day or two input the cad data into the machine, set up the tooling, run a couple of prototypes just to see if it works and then make a final prototype for manufacturing and still make money to pay for the machine...

Throwdown 07-01-2008 10:03 AM

I've worked in a CNC machine shop, and I can tell you paying to get something like this made via CNC is ridiculously expensive. I'm having a company cut out custom emblems for my car, and I'm having them laser cut the parts. It's much faster and cheaper. I'm only paying around $200 for mine, and they're made out of aluminum.

Angry Bunny 07-01-2008 10:27 PM

I wasn't necessarily surprised by the cost Rotr8, but $950 for two days work and a
5"x1"x5" piece of ABS is certainly not "nothing when you think about it."

I'm going to make it myself out of ABS. It will take some time but I can guarantee I'll get what I want and it won't cost me over $50.

Rotr8 07-02-2008 10:09 AM

cool,,, it would be interesting for you to track how much time you spend on fabrication, when your finished let us know..

I agree it would, let's see if I can beat $950, I don't know when I'll start though yet.

Rotr8 07-02-2008 12:10 PM

and how much are you going to estimate you cost at per hour, most fabricators charge around $65-$90 an hour...

To be named later 07-02-2008 12:25 PM

That is EXACTLY what I was trying to describe on page 1.

Nice job.

Angry Bunny 07-02-2008 11:21 PM

I don't and won't have the overhead, insurance costs, and worry where the next job is coming from. I'm not saying I think fabricators are overpaid guys. It's not just that I can do the work myself, I actually want to.
