Mesh or no mesh....

1 Attachment(s)
OK, so I finally got the balls to cut out the fake mesh from my bumper, and trimmed the exhaust heat shield up so that the exhaust is visible. Now I am torn between installing mesh or leaving it empty... I love the look of the exposed exhaust, and don't know if I want anything blocking it... Thoughts?

I think it looks sweet dude. As long as the exhaust stays nice and shiny.

LifeAfterRx8 11-23-2011 12:15 PM

I think it'd look better with the mesh.
You could always paint the entire defuser/under spoiler the same color as the car and it turns out great.

Chris 11-23-2011 12:15 PM

mesh it and get a lebran light :D

bse50 11-23-2011 12:53 PM

Get a black mesh, it will still make the exhaust's shiny reflection visible.
This may seem stupid but this mod is actually pretty functional too. Congrats

I agree.

How exactly?

Chris 11-23-2011 01:36 PM

well for one it will cool the exhaust. not much but it will allow for more air flow around the pipes.

Plus it's mad weight reduction yo!

Chris 11-23-2011 01:44 PM

meh, most likely the opposite when the mesh goes on.

 You know, that what my 8 year old said while he was watching me do it. I said "Son, you take poops that are heavier than this stuff". He LOVED that one ROTFLMFAOBBQ!

Definitely needs mesh, that's why Mazda had the ugly fake mesh there - to cover up the plumbing look of the exhaust parts. Black mesh with the exhaust showing behind would look cool! (The fake mesh is one of the few parts of the car I've never liked.)

As others have stated it helps to cool the exhaust. You can remove half of the heatshields and still have a cool trunk.
Another under appreciated thing is that it helps to avoid a parachute effect that causes drag in that area.
This is most apparent if you don't have the stock exhaust (partially designed to "fill" that area) or are anyway lowered.
Of course it is 99% cooling and 1% aero benefits but you still get the idea :)

It looks empty without the mesh. It looks better with the mesh in it.

I cut all of the black portion completely off and have a center exit exhaust with dual tips. It's a bit rough right now but I'll post some pics tomorrow and get horrible replies...lol. I'm working on a rear wind diffuser so I'll post pics of it this weekend.

+1 totally agree

I just did this , with mesh, and I have the rotary symbol brake light. I also did as bse suggested, and removed about 1/2 of the heat shield to the muffers.
I really like the way it has an understated look. Pictures does not do it justice.

Sephitrask, bse50 suggests cutting 3" off to get this look, how much did you remove, so that the shield is not visible? Also, I am planning on using a cutting wheel. Can you fill me in on what all is ahead of me? My exhaust cans are smaller than most, so I am unsure if removing the catback is necessary.

I think with the diffuser painted body color and the accent light, this mod is awesome!

Thanks

I do think the mesh would finish it off, but in black. It will show the reflection from the exhaust. Here is a couple of pics with the Shield cut back and mesh installed.

I like the black mesh here

Here is a RE-Amemiya Super Dolphin with a silver mesh.

Black mesh would look better IMO

Why wouldn't you want to show that off?

Thats what she said....:mdrmed:

sorry I didn't get back to your question, I don't come on here much, I am usually over at www.rotarycarclub.com . I cut about three inches off as well with a grinder. I never did put mesh in it, I think I am going a different route in regards to modifying the rear bumper. I will post pics when it happens

brilliantblackrx8 04-28-2012 11:43 AM

I ended up cutting off 3" with my cutoff, and I got the mesh painted black, but haven't installed it yet. The plastic wasn't too bad to remove, although I scuffed a little more than I wanted. Doesn't matter because it's all getting repainted at the moment.

I am sure the mesh will look great. With what I have planned there will be no place to put mesh, then again I AM being taught how to lay CF :suspect:

This looks pretty sweet! I think I may try this.

E-Rod85 05-24-2012 07:03 PM

This how I did mine

brilliantblackrx8 05-25-2012 04:29 AM

^ pictures?

wrightcomputing 05-25-2012 06:08 AM

I think Black Mesh is the way to go it will give it a more finished look but you will still be able to see the exhaust through it.
