Melting Exhaust shrouds
 

I have the turbo xs catback and it seems to be sitting a little bit closer to one side of my shrouds that it started to make the paint bubble (ings replica shrouds) and I know they make the heat shields but those are 200 bucks a set, so does anyone know of a good alternative or maybe have a used set? I could use all the help I can get. Thanks!

Actually found a solution, using heat shielding for motorcycles.

Could you provide some more detail for your solution? I have had the same issue, thankfully it seems to have slightly been resolved by painting the shrouds with high heat paint (black) but id like a better more long tern solution

Also interested...my shrouds vanished and I literally have burn marks on my bumper from them cooking it...

I have had my Turbo XS for years and never had an issue and I have never seen that issue on any of the few I have installed for other people either. So unless something is bent or unless you have the old TurboXS (like quite a few years old) without the dual walled tips that I don't see how it would melt your shrouds. Maybe you bought an old stock Turbo XS system?

Ive got megan racing. Megan cat delete. And obx headers. Basically the same as agency power IMHO for next to nothing (i got em free) and like i said i just took the shrouds off. Cleaned them. Light sand. Paint black with VHT 500 degree engine enamel. No clear coat. The clear will turn brownish over a few weeks. They actually look better than that terrible grey black. PROBLEM SOLVED at least for me. I guess try playing with the exhaust hangers to move it around

Remove the shrouds and cut 2"-3" off the back. You will never notice once reinstalled.

Mine melted up front..thus my issue..I attempted to even cut them around that area but it looked like I was trying t o make an exhaust shroud for a civic...

Oh yeah, well some shitty exhaust systems will melt the shrouds no matter what you do, especially the exhausts with thing single walled tips like most of the cheaper quality exhausts have. But the latest versions of the Turbo Xs should not.

Lol *shitty*..... haha iirc all real exhaust systems are practically the same performance wise when that cat comes out. (That opinion does not include home made exhausts, weird ricer exhaust styles, or frankenexhaust)

Whether megan racing is or is not shitty doesn't matter much to me or is the topic of this discussion. Sounds good, shoots flames like it should, has good welds, was free, and had the "blue" tips. This is good enough for me. And in regards to the dual walled design it tends to look less "aggressive" since they roll that edge inward. It's aallll personal taste. But if you have found success with turbo xs then by all means use it. But *some* of us prefer to blaze our own trail and attempt different styles. Wouldn't be very fun if every rx8 modded the same.

Now back to the topic at hand. I couldn't imagine how cutting the shroud would help you out unless yours is tucked waay back.

1. Heat tends to radiate everywhere and also rise upwards at idle... thus the top of the shroud near the bumper takes a lot of the heat.

2. If you are catless or running any sort of real set up you are gonna see huuge fire balls.

So you're real options here are...( in order of cost)

1. Ditch the shrouds completely (unless its possibly burning your bumper)
2. Clean, sand, paint with vht 500 deg (8 to 10 bucks)
3. Fabricate new design for how yours hangs, gonna have to get creative. Weld, cut, extend, bend. Etc.
(20-25 bucks for hardware, welding gas/wire)
4. Have a shop fabricate how yours hangs... again like number 3 just add labor! Yaay.
5. Make exhaust finishers
6. Buy exhaust finishers (200??)
7. Buy a turboxs exhaust *apparantly* but such claims may be a case by case basis.

By shitty I mean the thin single walled tips and crappy mufflers (Megan, AP, Ebay Toyosport, etc). Hence why the packing gets burnt out and the exhaust get louder with age (not good). There is a reason why the quality exhausts for the RX-8 have reverse cooled or closed dual walled tips. If you are happy with the Megan and it was free then cool, that doesn't make Megan products any less shitty.

If you really want to protect against melting and can't get a nice exhaust system then get the OEM Metal exhaust finishers and if you don't like chrome have them powder coated.
