Made my own front splitter, Mazdaspeed bumper

Well i made my own front splitter, if its functional or not who really knows, but for my daily driving, it will work just fine :) Its about appearance for the moment.

Rotr8 10-03-2010 12:30 PM

looks pretty good, hopefully youve secured it with some very sturdy mounts

Z0oMzo0m 10-03-2010 12:34 PM

:) yes i did, lol its not going anywhere, well i hope not...

bumblebeerx8 10-03-2010 12:57 PM

looks good what did you make it out of

Z0oMzo0m 10-03-2010 01:03 PM

well, being that i wasnt sure how it was going to look, i went to home depot and picked up a sheet of arcrylic plastic. It was 50.00 for a sheet 3' by 6' and is maybe little less then 1/8 thick. Made a template out of cardboard and traced it out and cut away.

The only problem is that it is think so it did bow it some places, and just had to use some more fasteners. But for being that it was a "see how it looks type deal" i am ok on how it came out.

I would use a thicker piece for the next one though.

Looks real nice, good work. Can we get some low level shots to see thickness and how it looks from a street view?

Mr.We$t 10-03-2010 03:05 PM

Looks really good, wonder if u can construct a wing out of that material hmmmm

Z0oMzo0m 10-03-2010 03:07 PM

Thanks guys for all the positive post!

pdxhak 10-03-2010 03:34 PM

How far back does the splitter go?

Z0oMzo0m 10-03-2010 04:15 PM

just the bottom outline of the front bumper, it was thin material so it would have sagged to much to make it go back a couple feet. Thats why i state it's probably not so functional, but the idea is there now and more can be done with it.

Its a good template

And one upside down as well. Also, one with more of your finger in it. :cwm27:

Very cool fab guy, might sand down the edge a little bit with some 800 grit to give it a beveled edge. Just make sure it doesn't fly off and decapitate someone.

Z0oMzo0m 10-04-2010 06:23 PM

Lol, my finger got in there because of the glare u couldn't see my phone on where I was taking pic off. Lol its held on pretty good. I have some arp adjustable rods coming as well.

SayNoToPistons 10-04-2010 06:43 PM

Please report back when you bottom out with it.

Z0oMzo0m 10-04-2010 07:23 PM

U got it man..... why would I bottom out with it? Not now how to drive? Haven't hit bottom with bumper yet so I'm sure a piece sticking out 2" isn't going to change a whole lot. Bit I'll be glad to post when I do just for you

Some times I just wish scraping the bumper or other parts is avoidable =[.

Z0oMzo0m 10-06-2010 11:37 AM

Well, acrylic isn't the material to use, after few days of highway driving, it had stress cracks.

I found a plastic dealer local, and il be picking up a 1/8inch of ABS, this will do the trick. its much more durable to flex and can stand more vibrations.

:) But it definitely finished the front end of the Mazda speed bumper, it looks so empty now that its off :(
