Just wondering about a D.I.Y. for MS Body Kit

hello everyone...I should get my mazdaspeed body kit sometime this week and wanted to put up a D.I.Y. for it, however I've never written one before. If you could, list things that I should include in the D.I.Y. thread so I can be sure I don't leave anything out.

Also, it's going to be a complete install...front bumper, side skirts, and rear bumper. Wish me luck!

In the case of the MS kit, the factory instructions are pretty complete. I'd say only put thoughts or observations that would either clarify what's written or provide a different order of steps and why you'd do it differently. Again in this case factory drawings are pretty good so only include photos that clarify things the drawings may not be clear about or to illustrate how you do things differently.

You can see some of my thoughts and observations here: http://members.roadfly.org/ryang/Maz...tructions.html

cool, sounds a lot easier than writing an entire D.I.Y.

btw, I just received notice that my body kit comes in tomorrow. oh happy days!

how much did you pay or where did you order from?

i've encountered a fitment problem with the rear diffuser and will post pictures tomorrow, then hopefully find a way to correct the problem. basically, the rear is not flush with the existing rear bumper...there is a gap right above the exhaust pipes.

i'll let you guys know how it goes tomorrow...

mikeb 06-04-2004 02:29 PM

cool
good luck with it

Arcane 06-05-2004 12:30 AM

hmmm, couldn't get it fitted right...i'm leaving it as is, and i also have fitment problems with the passenger side skirt...bah...well, it's not necessarily fitment problems, just gaps...

as for suggestions...the only one i have is:

1. don't rely on the double-sided tape...go to autozone, pepboys, or whatever you have and get some gorilla glue...use that as your adhesive and you should be fine.

pictures will be up tomorrow or sunday.

My rear diffuser fit fine without any problems. Did you cut off enough of the stock rear bumper? That's the only thing that could make the kit not fit right.

Arcane 06-05-2004 06:17 PM

I think i did. I cut pretty much everything you did, and then some (had to reference your picture because i was getting ticked off). I'll post pictures in about 10 mins.

edit: better make it 2hrs and 10 mins. My digicam battery is dead :)

Arcane 06-05-2004 06:56 PM

OK, i looked at your picture again. Seems like i missed the side parts (what looks like fangs). I cut those off and it fits better. There's a little gap between the top part and the old bumper, but I think that's the double-sided tape's fault. I'll slap on some gorilla glue later and it should be good.

God damn that looks sexy! ........

ARRGG.... the only thing thats really pushing me back from a MS kit is that the rear bumper needs to be chopped off....

Is that piece attached to the rear bumper or is there a replacement part from Mazda that i can get thats just that plastic piece?

Yeah, the tiny gap is due to the tape.
Looks good. It's just like mine; except for the front MS bumper. Aren't you glad you didn't pay the $80/hr labor charge for the dealer to install it.

Arcane 06-06-2004 05:18 PM

Yeah. After doing the install, there really is no reason to pay for someone else to install. It's very simple and takes about 3 hours with a few breaks. About 15 mins to install the front bumper, and hour to install the rear, and about an hour and a half to install the side skirts (time includes A LOT of smoke breaks)

You have to hack off part of the rear bumper, then the rear diffuser installs over it. Nothing is bolted to the old bumper, you're mainly just cutting off parts that will get in the way. BIU, the install is very very easy. Even if I didn't have any experience with installing body kits, I could do this one. If you haven't seen adrian-1's post, take a look.

So if you decide to take off the rear diffuser..... Would you have to get a new rear OEM bumper?

mikeb 06-06-2004 05:28 PM

yes^^^

cortc 06-06-2004 09:55 PM

Just installed the complete kit including fog lights... Good instructions, very good quality kit; the hardest part was the fog light bracket install...

One pic for now more to come on another thread...:)
