I did it again, painted front mesh
I couldn't resist. The other things I've painted sofar have turned out so well I had to. I really like the way this turned out. Let me know what you guys think. I tried to fix some of the glare and it turned out looking fuzzy on the hood but oh well.

heres another shot
very nice
now how long did that take and with what paint? |
looks alright.. not my cup of tea though
done with same touchup paint as the vents and rear bumper mesh. took about 2 hours or so depending on how meticulous you are.
I like it greg
looks sharp IMO |
its ~ok~....
To me it calls a little TOO much attention to something as insignificant as a GRILL. The black was subtle enough that it was tasteful. Now you SCREAM that you have a grill mesh. |
More of a classic look to it now... probably goes well with the painted side vents and rear grill... but to be honest, I think it looks like it's got a huge gaping grin now... but again, top marks for mods on a budget :)
I think all the silver looks good on the black car, I have silver so I like the black on mine.
hmm not such a good response after all. looks like i may be painting this one black again.
thats the beauty of it you can switch back to the old color if you like.
I like it. It's got a very classic look to it. I wonder how it would look on red, and also how the paint will hold up. Kudos for your effort!

Both of those pictures are WAY over exposed. If you can post a better picture so we can see the black on the car then we might get a better representation of the whole package.
Greg-
I like your willingness to experiment. IMO the silver treatments look good on the black making it a bit unique. But the grill might be too much-can't decide. I know some were looking to smooth the badges but the posts leave them bu-ugly holes leading to dreadful bodywork. How about monochroming the badges so that their not as noticable? This would be best on the black and I figure your our guy! Go For It ! Send us pix |
I agree those pics look overexposed. Here is one I just took in the garage. How bout now? Better worse? ...
the other pictures were washed out. much better i like it.
how about the front rotary accent? are you doing that silver?
yes I'm planning on doing that as well I just haven't got around to it yet. prob tomorrow.
I like it. I think it may be a bit too bright though its always hard to tell from a picture. Maybe a darker silver paint like the color on the Titanium RX-8 would be a bit more subtle and still give you the look you're after.
second pic is way better
I like it man |
Looks great, on a black car though.
I think think the black provides enough contrast to pull it off. Nice work!! |
i agree on maybe using a more subtle silver/ gray for the grill. the current silver is a little too bright for it. nice attempt though.

I think it looks very nice - a "classic" appearance. As long as the paint holds up ok. If it starts to wear away much it will look like crap. If you really like the silver you might consider constructing a grille out of stainless steel or aluminum mesh. While you're at it, consider protecting the oil coolers and a/c condenser areas - they are woefully exposed to road debris -- check out other threads on this.
Well done Greg
i think all the silver paint jobs look great. Will be trying it myself soon when I have a car!! (Roll on December) |
Rice, once again. Leave it stock, black is black for a reason, if you wanted to stand out you should have bought a different color.
Am I changing the color? No. I like the black. It doesn't "stand out" nor do I believe its "rice". Black looks good with subtle accents and all of the other colors contrast on the areas that I have painted so why not the black?
Originally posted by LightEmUp Rice, once again. Leave it stock, black is black for a reason, if you wanted to stand out you should have bought a different color. Was it only the black & white RX that appealed to you?? (yes i know white wasn't an option, it's called a pun!!) The reason why Mazda released a few colours to choose from was because different people have different tastes. I for one enjoy rice, especially with sweet & sour chicken. |
Looks like a great big smiling face.
Not really sure why all the hate for this. I mean ALL of the other colors contrast against a black grill. Black can theoretically contrast as well. I just don't see why "looks like a big smiley face" is only apparent on black. You see this on the other cars. Black on black on black blurs all of the cool angles and design features that mazda put on this great car. I'm just bringing them out a little bit. The flash on the camera might exaggerate it a bit but come on. Anyway, I'm tired of defending it because interestingly enough the only people who seem to dislike it are some people in the rx-8 club.
This looks great. I wouldnt care what other people tought about it if I liked it this much. It really looks great.
What u painted with?

couldnt you remove the grill to paint it?
You have to remove the entire front bumper.
other threads say that removing front bumper is easy
The front of the car with the mesh painted like that remindsme of the Lexus convertible for some reason in all of those pics. Looks too luxurious for me but Im surethat just b/c of the way the pics came out.
I wish I could try that on mine butit would look ridiculous to paint the front mesh silver or chrome on a Titanium Rx8. |
I like the idea of the painted grill for the black. After painting the side vents silver, it seemed only logical to paint the grill silver also. As someone already pointed out, the side vents and front grill are pronounced on every other color except black -what's wrong with just doing the reverse for the black?
I was going to use a duller silver - like the titanium - but the lighter silver blended in with the shine from the strakes . One other thing...I liked the effect of the grill so much that I moved the license plate - down! Now it covers the front rotary accent, but I think the trade-off for that uncluttered grill was worth it. |
I personally think it looks great on black, not rice at all. It's very tasteful.
Il ike it,
it looks like an Aston Martin. |
I really like it....like it's been mentioned before I might try a more subtle silver (like the titanium) but I would definitely go to your color if that didn't work out.
can you maybe post a pic showing off the vents and the grill that you painted?....I'd love to see how the car looks overall with them both.
I think the silver grille looks sweet... only thing i think you need to do is add some silver grilles for the oil coolers, i think they would even out the "smiley" that people have been talkin about.
After having seen alot of people do the grilles on the gaping holes of the MS nose, I think it adds a *finished* look to the overall appearance. Not to mention protecting your investment. Don't mind the people who have dogged your work in here, do it because YOU like it. I dont recall any posts that have people flaming the chrome rotery accents and strakes on a blk 8. ;) Keep up the good work! |
looks okay nice job
