HID Projector Foglights

5 Attachment(s)
I have been wanting to install projector fogs for a long while because the stock fogs distroy the hid cut off line.

I started by taking an extra set of fog light brackets and creating a mounting pad. I owe thanks to kewscott for giving me his brackets when he installed his MS bumper. Thanks!

In the pictures below you can see how I made the bracket.

Here you can see the test fitting. The last picture is a view of what the fog light sees!!!

Pictures, check out the cut off line. The 3rd picture against the wall is only the fogs, the 4th is both headlights and fogs.

Looks super nice. Matches the stock HIDs

momo 12-20-2005 02:23 AM

Hey Rotary Rasp, what of projectors did you use and what type of bulbs are you running? Good job.

Rotary Rasp 12-20-2005 09:26 AM

The projectors are off of ebay, I had to modify the cut off sheild because the lenth of the HID capsule is different. The bulbs are 6000K HID H3 capsules.

nice rasp, thats bright as hell...gotta see them in person at the next meet..

canaryrx8 12-21-2005 04:26 PM

so are these running off of ballasts or? any problems with flickering when you first turn them on? Are they just wired into the factory fog wires? any relays used? I'm looking to do something different with mine as they look ok and everything but they don't seem to really aid my HID's much at night except for maybe lighting up the peripheral a teensy bit. looks great, nice work.

Looks awesome Rasp!

Keep up the good work...

Yes, these are real HID. Take a look at the DIY I made when first installed the HID kit:
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-hid-fog-lights-57100/

HID systems use only 64% of the power used by the stock halogens (HID 35 watts / Halogen 55 watts). Therefore, there is no reason to use a relay, the stock wiring is good enough.

Converting the HID using the stock reflecters easily yielded twice the light output. Converting the reflectors to projectors increased the lumes by another factor of two. I'd say these fogs produce almost as much light as the stock HID headlights. Remember that these are fog lights, meaning that they are not suppose to shoot really far, but rather to the sides. Also, because I installed a cut off sheild they wont blind other drivers.

Did this help?

Jedi54 12-21-2005 05:09 PM

What did this whole project cost ya?

Rotary Rasp 12-21-2005 05:16 PM

Well, if I had done it like this from the start, I could do everything for about 300 bucks. Thats including the HID ballast and bulbs.

But since it was a never ending project i spent more. I first was going to try and retrofit a extra set of RX8 projectors. But I gave up on that because it was too hard to keep water out. When I bought these projectors I had to buy different bulbs. I also bought 2 different colors to play with. 8k and 6k.

Total cost was 300
(ballast, bulbs, wire, projectors)
+

Stuff I didn't need because I could not make up my damn mind.

6K H11 Bulbs $100
6K H3 Bulbs $100
RX-8 Projector $75

$575- ouch

I feel you bro. I want to do the something very similar. I'm spending alot of time on HIDPlanet.com where I have learned so much already. I picked up an extra pair of headlights and an extra pair of Bosch DS2 projectors. I plan on modifing the projectors in the headlights and retrofitting the projectors into the fogs. I will do a DIY write up and take plenty of pics.

Just some teaser info 1) removing the foreground limiter in the projectors 2) replacing fresnel the lens with a clear pair of lense, will make a world of difference output wise. :ylsuper:

Rotary Rasp 12-22-2005 12:09 PM

Yeah, if you could get a non-rippled lens in the stock projectors......damn that'd be nice.

Kings8 12-23-2005 02:20 AM

That looks great RR!

Anyone know if there's a quick fix(like changing bulbs) that will get the fogs a little closer to the headlights?

Kings8 12-23-2005 08:45 PM

Anyone?

mikeb 12-24-2005 05:47 AM

do you mean closer in color????
if so buy some aftermarket h11 bulbs

DOMINION 12-24-2005 08:36 PM

Rotary Rasp, how long have you had them in? They look way to bright. Any run in's with da law?

No, why would I?

These have cut off sheilds installed, so there is no glare from them.

Yeah, thanks.. That's what I was asking. I had found those, but I just didn't know 1. How hard the bulbs are to replace and 2. how close of a color match they are, and I guess 3. What type of H11 would be closest.

kwescott 12-26-2005 11:39 AM

Great job Rodger. Nice to see the project complete.

dgcls 01-02-2006 11:28 AM

i recently upgraded my headlights to 8000k HID's & swapped out the fog bulbs w/ a set of H11 PIAA's. the colors do not match but the output is much better. i may just be getting another HID kit for the fogs...

Jedi54 01-02-2007 03:44 PM

Figured I'd bump this since it had been exactly one year since anyone posted in it.

DaveCM203 01-02-2007 04:03 PM

Thanks for the bump.

Kris 01-02-2007 05:50 PM

Hey Rasp, just wondering since you had the HID Fogs on for longer than a year, how did they hold up? Im thinkinking about doing mine as well, but im not sure where to mount the ballasts.

maxuz 11-04-2007 07:30 PM

im interested in doing this as well, once i actually get an 8. had hid fog projectors on my 04 3, and love love loved them.

havent ever been under an 8 yet, looking forward to seeing what i've got to work with.

interested to see if you're still happy with your ebay projectors.

damn, missed the 1 year mark by 1 day. Oh well, close enough...

Rasp: any update? Been through any bulbs over the last 2 years?
If you had it to do all over again, would you do anything differently?

Rotary Rasp 01-04-2008 07:23 PM

oh nice... i dont check this area often, if you couldn't tell. lol

it's been over two years and i've had no problems with the fogs. I changed the ballasts with the oem rx8 ballast. Anything other then oem is crap. ebay ballast = shit.

Jedi54 01-04-2008 07:29 PM

I do quite a bit of night driving, you're seriously making me consider this...

kainis2k 01-12-2009 02:05 PM

Anyone else done this mod yet? I'm looking into it but I've already purchase H11s that I'll be installing soon to see if they suffice. I'd really like the cutoff myself but if there's not too much glare, I'll stick with the OEM. This looks pretty complicated...
