headlight/tail light black out?

hey everyone i tried to do a search for this but i couldnt find anything, has anyone put black outs on their tail lights? or head lights? just wondering if so how did you do it?

sorry if repost

gr8 saki 11-08-2005 04:03 PM

you know, its funny you mention the blackout kits.
i was searching online for some RX-8 goodies, and saw a pic of an 8 with the front blackout kit on. I'll see if I can find the site for you.
One thing to think about is the state regs and whether your state allows them on while you're driving. Most of them don't.

I'm trying to seperate the lense and the housing to black out the chrome but not the lense...it isn't going so well

epitrochoid 11-08-2005 04:54 PM

that mazdaspeed concept had badass blackouts, like the FD had...unfortunately, i think that'd kill the light output quite a bit.

mikeb 11-08-2005 07:42 PM

its not legal or safe really but it looks cool

SayNoToPistons 11-08-2005 07:44 PM

blacked out like tinted lense? if so, i have a friend that brought some tail light black out sprays that comes in a can from Auto Zone. it looks nice but it doesnt kill the light output a bit like epitrochoid said

epitrochoid 11-09-2005 01:01 AM

yea, i used that on my old civic..it didn't dim the lights too much, definately not unsafely. only thing was it made them a flat black. i heard if you clear over the tint it looks OEM, but i dont know. with our tails we could also open them up and tint from the inside, i think that'd look badass.

www.lamin-x.com

he sells precut kits for the headlight, taillight and fog light for the rx8. many differnt colors, i have used the clear and yellow for my head/fog lights

I'm having one hell of a time seperating the lense from the housing right now any tips???

cgrx 11-10-2005 01:18 AM

I did my headlights on my last car. Haven't tried the 8. Was worried about the lock mechanism and the LEDs
Put them in the oven at 300 or so and pulled them apart. The glue is sticky. You can heat up the lights again and use the same glue to reseal them

SEVENplus1 11-10-2005 02:17 AM

does anyone have any pictures? and gr8 saki you fiund that site? because i seen a rx8 around here with black out tails and it looked pretty nice and with the tinted headlights

Did my headlights awhile back. I like it / I used the type from the link above but I got mine off e-bay- DON't tint the driving lights!!! I did and was standing in front of my car after I was done and SMOKE was coming off the lower driving lights!! They get way to hot.

cgrx 11-10-2005 05:58 AM

if only there was something like that for the back................

do you mean foglights?

btw the install on the headlights look really clean

but I'm not a fan of a tint out...looks like an Aphex Twin music video
but a black out of the chrome in the tailight or hell in the headlight housing might look really good

I'm still trying to get my tailights apart, a real pain in the arse let me tell u

vaseirik 11-10-2005 02:21 PM

I was thinking about blacking out the tail lights using a tint for the inside of the light housing, but that seems really difficult (unless you have a canned spray). Has anyone tried the external tinting and have pics? I'm curious to see the results.

is this a spray or a film and hwat brand spray or film is it?

handon3 11-11-2005 01:19 AM

Sorry, you know what I meant- truemagellen - the fog lights get very Hot!
here is a link for the spray kind--
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/03-05...spagenameZWD1V
The kind I used is a vinyl sheet that I cut to fit, about $35 I think, I got off e-bay, he isn't selling any right now but it's easy to find just search RX-8. I didn't know if I would like it either but it comes off very easy, just peel back a corner and spray some water/soap mixture under it and it let's go. There is many different things to use this stuff on, I tinted my friends CBR600RR front winshield and it looked sweet! I wounldn't use the spray kind for two reasons- a mess and you only get one shot at it, unless you want to by new lights!

truemagellen- good luck getting your taillights apart, quick idea-- use a heat gun and heat up the outside of the lights, they are sealed with sillicone or a product close to, Funny-you wantur taillights apart and some people have leaks in there's and want there's sealed, maybe trade someone with moisture in side of there's- I am also in the process of putting my X-box in my 8 and I know you have gone through this already, inverter trouble and so on, I have read the threads- but any advice on where to mount or things that you might of done differently would be greatly taken.

truemagellen 11-11-2005 02:31 AM

hi Handon, I was kidding about the fogs I knew what you meant :) :)

as for seperating them I have an entire extra set of tailights to mess with so I'm having fun cooking ;) The heat gun idea someone did and destroyed the tailight so I'm a bit weary but a friend of mine on the forum has a variable heat gun so that may be an idea...I must get the inside hot hot hot

as for the xbox...if you aren't using the nav screen as your display it will be easy, the nav display has goofy grounding issues. if you are or aren't I recommend installing a 12v DC to DC powersupply...inverters are a bloody mess.

I recommend the M1-ATX which has a built in relay and smart voltage system....that way when I start up the car it is direct connected into the power but it is the power of the accesorry line that activates the box, just like a sub but it has a 15 second delay so if the engine cuts out or power turns off for a few seconds the xbox recovers...also it automatically does a soft shut down, just like pushing the power button instead of a total cutout.

wont you guys get pulled over with the tinted lights?

TxRx8 11-11-2005 07:31 PM

My subauru buddies usually stick their headlights in the oven. Not sure about the time or temp, but I can find out if that'll help Magellen. :D

TxRx8 11-12-2005 12:07 AM

Well, the temp and time to take apart your headlights is 225 degrees for 7 minutes in your standard gas oven. The subie guys swear by it, and the results are very good. Just remember to seal 'em up with some weather proof apoxy stuff.

truemagellen 11-12-2005 12:49 AM

bummer I tried 220 for 15, I got nothing

BoosTED 11-12-2005 01:09 AM

We could always use the old heat the razor blade trick or the multiple temp heat gun.

Last resort we pull out your favorite tool: the angle grinder :hahano:
