Front Plate or not

i have recently been debating removing my front license plate but wasn't sure if it is legal or not. i have seen a couple without front plates. i think it gives the stock '05 front bumper a better look. anybody know if it is legal or not?

It is illegal in Texas but i will never run a front plate.

Depends on your state. You left that part out. Fortunately, you have your location noted under your avatar.

Try googling "Idaho Front Plate law". Seriously, not every state requries it, most do.

If you glance around at other common cars driving around on a daily basis in your state, do they have front plates? if so, then yes, your state probably requires it, because the states that don't require it, generally only give you 1 plate, the states that do, give you 2.

That being said, RI requires a front plate, and I don't have it on. Looks ugly, and blocks airflow in the summer.

Front plate requirements change from state to state as does the penalty if it is required. You should check with local members/friends/DMV. I bet the DMV for your state has this info on their home page.

If that doesn't apply then your are a 2 plater :)

A front plate is required in Idaho. link I'm not sure of the penalty; didn't do that much searching for you.

Ohio requires one, but I don't have one on my 8. Too pretty to have a big buck tooth. If i'm forced to put it on, I'll probably buy or fab up and hide away bracket.

I live in Missouri and I never have my front plate on but when i did get pulled over for a speeding ticket, they tagged me on not having a front plate on even though it was in my dash...the fine was 200 dollars for the plate...I've never been pulled over just for the front plates or heard of anybody getting pulled over...you can however just don't drive stupid or run into a cop having a bad day lol

If when you registerd your car, you recieved two plates, then it is required to have two by law. I have been pulled over once for not having a front plate and was without it for three years. I would suggest getting the electronic hide away license plate holder if you want to go without it. Besides, it would be funny to get pulled over for not having the front plate, then push the button on the remote and make it pop out and tell the cop, "what are you talking about, it's right there". :evil_laug

Take it off and put the plate inside your car up by the windshield

xun4gvn4everx 11-27-2009 07:50 PM

^ That does you no good. Technically, that is illegal. The same as having no front plate at all

True...if josuar88 read my post he would have known lol

xun4gvn4everx 11-27-2009 07:57 PM

^ You don't want to catch them on a bad day or at the end of the month. At least around MD cause they have quotas to fill each month. Stupidest thing ever! :icon_no2:

josuar88 11-27-2009 08:01 PM

I understand that is illegal but so is speeding and I do that weather it only be 5mph over the limit or not. Laws are meant to be followed, given that I think its ok to bend a couple small ones to make your car look sexy.

xun4gvn4everx 11-27-2009 08:03 PM

^ So go with the flip up license plate, or go plateless. :yesnod: In the end, it is up to the individual owner and what risks they want to take. Just know that if you go plateless, you are already doing something that could get you pulled over. If you are cool with that, then by all means. If you want to stay legal, then just know that it is not. :)

What I think on the whole issue...If you dont mind forking out some extra cash just in case you do get tickets, go for it...If your rx8 is a daily driver...leave it on and when you go on photoshoots or meets just take it off and put it back on afterwards lol

xun4gvn4everx 11-27-2009 08:10 PM

^ Thats what I've been saying. :yesnod:

Cvzrx8 11-27-2009 09:21 PM

i had one but took it off never had it since and no tickets either :) ive gotten pulled over not a word about it, and a buddy of mine got a ticket for no license plate and when he went to the court house the judge laughed and said i keep telling them not to give tickets for that and it was dismissed XD!!! i live in dallas county texas lol

techerpaintball 11-27-2009 11:43 PM

since its a daily driver and the cops are assholes around here im gonna just keep it on for now... thanks for the advice. and sorry i was too lazy to go on Google... i always forget to look there. if anybody else wants to comment, as far as telling whether or not you got pulled over for it, im sure there's somebody else out there that will read this too.

Jethro Tull 11-28-2009 01:13 AM

Supposed to have one in my state.

Almost 3 years now, no front plate, no tickets. :) It also reduces your radar cross-section from the front.

You may as well just start dressing like Steve Urkel if you run a front plate.

A buddy of mine got pulled over for having his plate on his dash. The cop said that the plate could fly off the dashboard in a crash and cut somebody's head off.

I think hes seen too many final destination movies.

What a stupid ass cop I would have laughed right in his face

RIWWP 11-28-2009 02:21 PM

While 'cutting someone's head off' is probably a stretch, I wouldn't say it's impossible, but ignoring that part, yes, getting rear ended with a high collision speed can indeed unwedge your plate from the dash/windshield base, and be sent flying backwards into the car, and it indeed can, and has, caused serious injuries, normally injuries to the face in the form of bone deep gashes.

When I worked in the Trauma center of a hospital in Northern Virginia, I saw 2 different accidents with injuries from the flying license plate. One of them caught the plate across his eyes.

If you insist having it on the dash, at least get some good quality, and strong, suction cups and 'mount' it to the inside of the windshield securely. Reduces the risk quite a bit then, although, it doesn't eliminate it.

I just go no-front plate. It is financially more risky ($35 fee each time for RI, as long as I put it on for the 'court date', just paying court costs, $85 each time if I just pay it and ignore the court part), but the dash isn't worth the risk. I tried an Evo style plate mount low on the front bumper, but with the roads around here, I have ripped it off 3 times now, and am tired of buying a new plate mount each time. So I just keep the last mangled one in the back floor. If I get pulled over again, I have it on hand to show.

Think Carotid....and wonder how long it would take to bleed out :(

There have been numerous deaths and serious accidents from flying objects like laptops and books in vehicles.....

If you think a flying plate would be OK...you need to think about who is the stupid one...you or the cop ;)
