Fog light installation with HID headlights
 

Hi guys, just got my 2005 rx8 2 weeks ago and am wanting to put some fog lights on it. The previous owner installed HID's and was wondering if that would complicate the installation of the fog lights or how much wiring is going to be involved. Thanks!!

HID headlights are irrelevant when adding factory fog lights. Are you sure the HiDs you currently own are not stock.

Hello there, I've got a '04 RX8 and I too want to install factory FOG Lights... Question is: How can one do this without going through a lot of hassle? Does the vehicle come with factory harnesses tucked under where if you install the FOG Lights all you have to do is plug in the cables... can some share some of their experience?

Short answer... you can't.

Long answer... The OEM fog light kit comes with the fog light assemblies, a plastic shroud for the right side oil cooler opening (for use on AT vehicles), a replacement turn signal/light switch that includes the fog light switch and mounting hardware. Installation consists of removing the factory front bumper and installing the foglight assemblies (and the plastic shroud on AT models) to the mounting holes moulded into the bumper using the supplies screws. You then connect the factory foglight connectors (that dangle beneath the headlights) to the foglight assemblies WHILE reinstalling the bumper (the wire harness for the lights is short - only about 8 inches long). Then, you need to install the foglight switch - remove the lower dash cover that sits beneath the steering wheel, then remove the steering column cover. remove the wire harness connector to the existing turn signal/light switch, then remove the turn signal/light switch. Install the new turn signal/light/foglight switch, connect the wire harness connector, reinstall the steering column cover, and the lower dash cover and you are done.

If you have not removed your front bumper before, there are a few things that you will want to check... The screws that attach the engine undercover to the bumper (make sure they are all there... ALSO NOTE - the four that are located in the center of the bumper are shorter than the other six... make sure you do not get them mixed up unless you like holes in the front lip), the 5 plastic push fasteners in each wheel well (make sure they are not damaged) and the six push fasteners that attach the plastic cover to the top bumper frame. If needed, a complete set of push fasteners and screws should cost less than $20 from the dealer. (some of the few reasonably priced dealer parts)

The entire process should take less than an hour.

The OEM foglight kit is expensive (over $300 up here in Canada), but I've seen them sold (and have purchased a set) from ebay sellers for $40 to $75 plus shipping.

Sorry for the thread revival. Does anyone have the part number for the fasteners and screws bundle mentioned here? I Called my mazda dealer and they have no idea what I'm talking about.

The screws that attach the engine undercover to the bumper:
6 x 9CF60-0516B (long screw)
4 x 90734-0512B (short screw)
10 x B45-50-038 (clip nut)

plastic push fasteners in each wheel well:
5 x BC1D-56-145

six push fasteners that attach the plastic cover to the top bumper frame:
6 x 68-865Q

does the RH shroud go behind or infront of the oil cooler? it doesn't seem like it would fit either way

AT models don't have an oil cooler on the right hand side. It sounds like the shroud is only for cars which don't have any oil cooler there, if you've got a MT and have two oil coolers, you probably don't install the shroud anywhere.

Thread revival again. My mechanic recently opened up my front bumper to fix a leak with the oil cooler at which time severed the connections to my fog lights. When he reattached the bumper, he probably forgot to attach the right side fog light because it doesnt light up anymore. What i would like to know is if i want to attach it myself, will it be as simple as jacking up the right side of the car and putting in the bulb/connection or do i need to remove the battery connections first. I dont want to call my mechanic for what seems to be such a simple job.

Depends how he 'severed' the connections.

If he just dropped the bumper, it would have pulled the wires out of the connectors on the housing (hard to fix), unless you can splice & solder.

It's unlikely that he unscrewed the bulb holders and just forgot to plug one back in.


Time for a mechanic visit....

im sure he forgot the screw the bulb holders back on, because hes been working on 8s longer than ive been driving one. Also the left fog light works but the right doesnt, which probably indicates a loose connection or a disconnection.

if it is just screwing the holders/bulb back in, is it simple or still difficult? I couldnt find a DIY on the site, hence im asking here. Thanks :)

On the side of the fog light, you can just remove the three screws for the bumper and I think two plastic fasteners that's attached to the splash guard and the right-front fender liner. Pull the triangular flap down and you will see the wiring harness of the fog light. Otherwise, you can try reach blindly into the front air dam with one hand, but that's if you know what to feel for.

i guess youre right. i could remove the front right wheel to have enough space to mess around. didnt think of it like that.

Or, just turn the wheel out.

But do I have to disconnect the battery though, or is there no chance for me to electrocute myself while fiddling around in there?

I didn't because my harness was not messed up. But you should anyway, since you do not know the condition of the wires. And "severed the connections to my fog lights" sounds like you'd have to do more than just Plug-And-Play.

The harness goes to the bulb holder, which obviously holds 'the bulb'.

To take the bumper off, you unscrew the holder which comes out with the bulb. Housing and lens stays with bumper, bulb in holder stays on body harness.

If he 'forgot to reconnect' one, it would be dangling inside, and you would see light.

Best case, he broke the bulb, but most likely the harness is no longer attached to the bulb holder, and a nasty fix to do past a tire and holding back the plastic fender liner.

....and also 'not your problem', it's his.

HighKing17, you seem so set on having your question about disconnecting the battery answered.
My advice is that if it doesn't take much effort and enhances safety, just do it...

Its a bit strange. I have a 2006 series 1 base model AT Rx8 and there are oil coolers on both sides if the car. Anyone else know of AT models with two oil coolers ? It will look kinda funny with just one shroud sigh.
