Clear coating your headlights
 

Do you guys think clear coating your headlights would make it clear?. Because when i got the car, it looks like someone used sandpaper to clean off the fog.
my question is, can you just sand them down and get them sprayed? i tried all products for headlight restore and nothing will last

There is actually a headlight clear that you can apply over it. I have some at work. However, a normal automotive clear coat will work fine. Here is what you do:

1. Clean headlight surface. Make sure there is no dirt, bugs, etc. on surface.

2. Wet sand surface of headlight with 600 grit sand paper. Make sure you smooth out any rough edges in this step. For example any edges from the factory UV coating coming off.

3. Wet sand with 800 grit sand paper.

4. Wet sand with 2000 grit sandpaper.

5. Clean surface and dry. Best to use a wax and grease remover found at auto body supply store.

6. Mask off headlights or if you wish remove them completely.

7. Wipe off surface (lightly!) with a tack cloth to remove dust particles.

8. Apply 1 medium coat of clear on headlight surface using an even pattern. (If inexperienced with painting, you may want to practice first on something so you can figure out what works better. If you apply too close, runs will develop and you will not be happy. If applied too far away, you will dry spray it.)

9. Wait 10 minutes and apply another medium coat of clear.

10. Let dry. Easiest way is to park car towards sun on a nice, warm day. It will be completely dry in a few hours.

11. If you have any imperfections on the surface like dirt particles or orange peel, wet sand with 2000 grit sandpaper and buff to a perfect shine and finish. A rotary buffer must be used to achieve this.

For best results a detail gravity feed spray gun should be used, but if you do not have an air compressor or a gun, the rattle can will work, although it may not lay as nice as with a spray gun.
