Body Kit = RICE

So i just came to this conclusion... Ever since the first fast and furious movie came out, body kits were considered to be RICE. The only form of body kit that wasnt considered rice over the last couple years would have been a lip kit. As i am flipping through the pages here on rx8club.com i have come to wonder if body kits are coming back in style? There are a bunch of options everyone wants including the MazdaSpeed version. Any ideas anyone?

Vlaze 04-23-2010 09:31 AM

It's subjective. I mean you can buy OEM body kits from the dealer if they didn't come stock with it like the GT time does or Mazda's own Mazdaspeed version built from the manufacturer. Does that make it rice? IMO, proper designed kits get way to better air flow to radiators, look better as well as providing some additional downforce depending on the design.

If perhaps a kit is ridiculously out of whack with crazy vents all over the place or excessively then I would consider it a bit rice but again it's a subjective matter.

Flashwing 04-23-2010 09:34 AM

Body kits have always been in style. The "rice" aspect deals mostly with a few specific items.

1. Body kits that are not done properly (ie. not painted, poorly painted, don't fit or have obvious fitting issues.
2. Body kits which are obviously not made for your car which, normally, result in #1 because they don't fit properly.
3. Busy body kits with tons of vents and rather outrageous designs.

Body kits, like many visual items, are all a matter of taste. The more simple and less aggressive kits will appeal to more people. The Mazdaspeed kit is a great design because it follows the original design of the RX8 while adding shape. However, because of it's wide appeal and OEM quality it's a common kit with cars that have bodykits.

Bodykits are only rice when they are done poorly. Otherwise it's just a matter of taste.

Most people say "RICE" these days because a) it's an overused term for something outside of stock look or b) they're jealous they can't afford it.

The term properly applied relates to people who add things to the car outside of it's stock appearance just for the look of performance but they really don't do crap. For example, buying a huge park bench wing when you're using it only as a DD, neon lights all over, excessive sized body kits that just are there for attention and not functional, etc.

JinDesu 04-23-2010 09:46 AM

Rice, or sometimes commonly known as "Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements", is subjective. My general rule is, if the body kit doesn't flare out unnecessarily (i.e. the body lines are kept intact), and you don't have a park bench wing, it's fine.

Alternatively, if you were to add random useless vents, fins, etc to the car, that would look like rice regardless :)

Rice is anything that sounds like a weed whacker :fruit:

Bigbacon 04-23-2010 09:52 AM

rice usually = gaudy or extreme excessiveness.

Did you put those parts on to make it look faster than it is? I think a line has to be drawn between "rice" parts and parts that make the car look good. "Rice" is when you add something that makes it looks like something it isn't - flame stickers? fake spoilers? useless vents? etc =p

I decided to go all cosmetic...and since its an AT...haha

But yeah, im sure everyone on here knows where that fine line is at... some examples in the "what not to do to your car" thread ;)

JinDesu 04-23-2010 10:23 AM

I think the most important thing is what you think! Ask yourself, does the car look good? If your answer is yes, then you're golden. Oh, how your significant other thinks about it might be important too lol.

Other than that, as long as you aren't trying to be a "poser", you generally aren't going to be called a ricer. The RX-8 is a pretty car!

Gr8Bullet 04-23-2010 11:10 AM

It's all in the eye of the beholder. What you think will look good is purely on you and if someone else says crap on it screw them they don't know you and your taste.

RA-Eight 04-23-2010 12:12 PM

Rice is a good thing. Excellent source of carbs/nutrients. And great with every meal.

Jedi54 04-23-2010 12:27 PM

I love rice
actually, I had a rice bowl last night with some kung pao beef, it was awesome.

as my little cousin used to say as a kid, "beans and rice are nice!" :D:

oh wait... what's this thread about again???

pdxhak 04-23-2010 12:41 PM

I eat rice everyday. Rice and eggs is my favorite breakfast :)

Jedi54 04-23-2010 12:43 PM

can't say I've ever had rice with eggs.
I'm Guatemalan, a more common breakfast would be eggs and beans. ummmm, yummy. :)

pdxhak 04-23-2010 12:47 PM

Rice and eggs with some soy sauce and a couple pieces of bacon :yumyum:

Eggs and beans sounds good too!

Atilla 04-23-2010 12:50 PM

Atilla 04-23-2010 01:06 PM

sephy; i can only imagine that the polynesian community would be very very small over there...:(

according to my uncle, he was one of the first samoan people on the east coast when he first came to america about 40 years ago...:(

sephyobsessed 04-23-2010 01:10 PM

yeeeeeah...I don't think I've ever met a samoan in person...

:suspect: it's probably for the best that there aren't many, I have enough issues resisting the koreans

curse you azns and your natural cuteness...:squint:

pdxhak 04-23-2010 01:10 PM

I LOVE polynesian food!

Jedi54 04-23-2010 01:11 PM

Atilla: never eaten polynesian food.
I lived a very deprived life.

Atilla 04-23-2010 01:15 PM

Sephy: well, when you come down to sevenstock you'll see a full blood in person ;) (your's truly) ;)

there's plenty of polynesian people there now...one of them is pretty famous...he's in pittsburg i would assume...his name is Troy Polamalu from the Pittsburg Steelers ;) the other one is named Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock :smoker:

pdxhak: duuuuude, i can cook up some crazy good poly food :yumyum: mama taught me well heh

Jedi: duuuuuuuuuude. Poly food is goooood. It also helps kids grow big n' strong............no seriously...my nephews are 16-19 and they're all taller, stronger and faster than me...:(

sephyobsessed 04-23-2010 01:21 PM

hahaha Yeah I know of Polamalu (please don't mentions the steelers...I'm not fond of them) though I don't deny that Polamalu is a very talented person.

And Yes I know of the rock...I though he was a mix of a bunch of things...is he full blooded?

Exciting! Atilla's gonna break my polynesian virginity!! erm...meeting...polynesian...not...THAT kind of virginity...

*brief moment of silence* yeah.....I'll just leave it at that...

BoardSnow6 04-23-2010 07:11 PM

So in the last few hours since ive been on this thread has gone from body kits to rice, beans, and eggs... lol. wtf? lol. Anyways... all points are good. Except here, in western pa in bfe, some guy told me i had a nice car at the gas station then asked what was under the hood. i told him a 1.3 rotary. he then responed to calling me a ricer. I hate it. If there are anyother ppl here from between pittsburgh and erie, it would be nice to know another rotor head.

Jedi54 04-23-2010 07:23 PM

Board: he called you a ricer because you drive a rotary? WTF?! wow, that's pretty retarded on his part.

oh, and sorry about the thread hijack, I was just having a little fun and it appears a few people followed my head and this turned into a food discussion. :o:

I'm sure there's owners in your neck of the woods, you should try posting in one of the Regional Subforums, I'm sure there's one that covers the part of the Northeast that you're in.
We've got members all over the place. :)

I say it depends on the type of body kit. Form vs. function. You have bodykits that are made specifically for inhanced aerodynamics, downforce, or for large intercooler/brake cooling. Then you have bodykits that serve no purpose other then appearance.

Example
Rice

Ok. Good points all around. And the thread jack is hilarious. lol. And the rice and beans is a fav of mine as well. lol. Theyre so much better mixed together.

c0ldf1ame 04-26-2010 01:18 PM

man this thread makes me hungry =\

Jedi54 04-26-2010 01:53 PM

I had eggs & beans yesterday for breakfast and immediately thought of this thread. :D:
