3 Strakes ... Better than 2? .. Part 2

Based on the feedback we received on our previous posting related to placing three strakes across the RX-8's side vent we've made some modifications. The most common comment regarded the strakes as being too close together. To address this, I designed and molded new custom third strakes. In addition, it was necessary to make significant modifications to the original style strakes in order to achieve proper fitment. This is an example of the commitment D MENAC 7 and I have to bring you unique accessories at affordable prices.

Like 'em or not, they're now available. I give you the world's first set of production strakes consisting of 3 strakes per side. No Photoshop'd images here. These are the real thing and this particular set is headed to SteathTL later this week. If you like the look and want a set for yourself, follow the link in the banner of my sig.

Any and all comments welcome and appreciated.

that looks good.... not sure about better. Equally good

First off let me say that you have a really nice, shiny velocity red 8. Congrats. What products do you use?

Ok back on topic... I think it looks alright but for some reason the center strake seems a little low or maybe to far back. Could be the picture angle. Overall it looks good, just nit picking.

3 strakes

I think the new layout looks great. The first time around was definitely a little suspect but these have worked out fantastically. Great job!

Thanks for the compliments ... Meguiar's NXT, Aerospace 303 protectant, EagleOne Wheel Cleaner, EagleOne Tire shine.

As for the loc of the middle strake, it is a camera thing. The strakes are actually raked a bit from top to bottom, giving a bit of a "speed" illusion. The top one reaches "back" the furthest from the vent, followed by the second then third which straddles the vent moreso than the others.

I like it !

I can't remember off-hand what the previous 3-strake setup looked like, but I remember commenting that they made the 8 look like a Crossfire. Not so in this case, so I give it the thumbs up :)

PS. What do you detail your tires with?? Nice! I use Black Magic and other similar products and don't know if I get them that shiny...

It's a nice idea. Well done.
I notice that the three strakes do not follow the curve of the vent properly. The top two strakes should be more to the right. It's very noticeable in the close-up pics. You should try to keep the tips of the 3 strakes the same distance from the edge of the vent.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it's just not possible. It's complex, and needs to be analyzed in 3-D. Actually the top 2 are right about (left to right) where the OEMs are. The third is shifted forward to maintain strake length and separation fom the door opening. Given the increasing radius of the wheel well as it rises to the top of the fender, a much thicker (vent to strake top), less streamlined top and middle strake would need to be made, thus throwing them out of proportion with the third, which just perpetuates the challenge. The alternative is to remove material from the right side of the strakes as they move to the right, but that just makes them out of proportion when looking at them from an elevated angle, which is far more common.

But you're right, if you just stare at them close up and straight-on from the side, they are not "perfectly" symmetrical left to right down the vent. They are slightly raked. With so much going on in that area, most folks won't even notice, or even care. And from any other angle, you can't tell. But, as we've seen with all the mods posted on the forum, some like .... some don't.

Thanks again for the input.

derwankel, I understand the difficulty that you encounter due to the curvature of the fender. But since you're custom making them, you could make the strakes shorter, takng off a bit from the right side of the bottom strake, and taking off a bit from the left side of the top 2 strakes to get all 3 properly aligned.
It may even look better with shorter strakes when you have 3 of them. As they are, they don't look factory-finished.

Hey, it's different!! Why be the same. I dig it.
