Will cobb tuning a stock 8 increase hp?
Im thinking of buying a cobb access port for my 05 rx8 right now its bone stock except from a drop in k&N filter and the intake mod where you take out the 2 walls in the box. Will the cobb improve HP or acceleration on a stock model like mine? is it rele worth the 600 bucks?
|
If you do a search you will find out more info about the Cobb Accessport. There are many threads on it. And yes it is worth the 695 dollars from MM aka MazdaManiac.
|
The answer is........maybe. Personally I think the 'other' stuff it does is good but perhaps not 700 dollars good. And the tuning HP is up in the air. If you are running a midpipe on your car (meaning no cat converter) then the AP is definitely good at tuning to use that freer exhaust flow, in which case you can think of it as a 'multiplier' of the gains you'd get from the cat alone. On a completely stock car you may get 10HP from it or you may get nothing, these engines are a bit funny like that....
|
is it worth 600 bucks just for the hp? no.
is it worth 600 bucks for the other things you gain from it? hell yes.. this car is ridiculously hard to get any kind of power from unless you go FI.. the best gains you'll get NA is from a catless midpipe like andrew said |
I don't really think it's worth it on a NA 8 until you run out of shit to do (my plan:))
|
^+1 lol I see them for sale on here all the time for $400.00 bucks. Cant go wong lol

Cobb is one of the best things you can buy for the rx8 or any car for that matter, great product...IMO it's well worth it

lol that's rough. Imo, you should buy it for all the extra things that it could do. Also you will gain hp even on a stock car. Idk how much exactly but I know it's a noticeable difference, so I would say 7+hp and 5lb torque. |

Meh. Those threads are just pure entertainment.

u said the best gains r from just catless midpipe....(is there a sound diffrence with the stock exhaust?) so if i buy a race pipe with no cat wnt that set of engine codes, which mean i wnt be able to pass inspection...
|
if you remove the OEM cat, the car gets louder.
unresonated midpipe is quite loud you will get a CEL unless you mask the light with an AP you will not pass inspection |
wnt the stock muffler reduce most of the sound... and will it at least sound decent?
O and if i get the cobb i can mask it with an ap...right so ill pass inspection if its masked |
stock muffler will not reduce most of the sound, it'll still be noticably louder then OEM.
Depends on your definition of "decent" What type of inspection do they do in your state? If there's a visual then you will fail for having violated Federal Emission Laws by removing an OEM catalytic converter. If they do a 'sniffer' test, you will once again fail due to the terrible smell / toxins that are not being filtered by a Cat. |
Well will it sound like a civic with a hole in the muffler?
And the guy i go to just plugs into the cars access port and does it electronically hes never lifted my car up to do a visual . So im asking if i mask it with a cobb ap will it show up when he runs a check electronically?? and besides isnt the midpipe held on with a few bolts so i can just take it off... or is it a lil more compliocated than that? |

To me it is how the car should sound stock but with a little too much of a tinny sound. I think a resonator would tune it perfectly. I do get a CEL every now and then but it is easily removed with my Scangauge II in 5 seconds. I do pass inspection. Not sure if I would elsewhere however. |
cobb is so worth the money, im still waiting for that magestical day were i order my cobb from mm :D
|
dude just come to the meets once it starts up.. you'll get a better idea of what you want. we got a lot of different combinations of exhaust systems
|
Yea i kno.. i went a few times and one person showed up.. im trying to do some research for parts that i want to put on eventually... i spent a weekend with my friend that has an STI and he bought the access port and he loves it.. and yes his car probably responds better because he can unlock more power with his turbo setup but he just got me thinking
|
not the long island meet, the Queens meet. the long island meet is really inconsistent.
|
O i c where do u meet in queens??

really? my boy who works at chrysler told me that even if i mask it with the cobb, i won't pass because of some technicality.. i forget what he said exactly.

The e-check place I go to does the visual inspection all the time, so I would fail even with the AP. |
no it was something about the cobb resetting the ECU or something.. the system automatically fails you if something is wrong. It might be just a new york thing

As long as the CEL is masked and you run the car several times over several days, it will absolutely pass. |
awesome dude.. thanks so much
|
Cobb is def worth it!
|
Ight thanx bro

Does the software work with Vista
|
I have Vista and it worked just fine with me
|
Only mistake I made though is buying it in the fall... cause I didn't receive it till the snow started to hit and I havn't been able to log much cause of the shitty roads. I've had mine over 3 months now and only sent in one set of logs. You only get 6 months worth of logs that you can send to MM when you buy an access port from him. Thats more than enough don't get me wrong but unless you have clear roads year round I'd wait till spring to get it so you have more dependable weather. That was my dumb fault... What happens after that 6 months? You have to pay a certain amount or is all up to you from that point on?

3 months is more than enough. |

The gains you can get with a new tune on a NA depends on a car by car basis.
If your stock tune is not reflecting for ex your maf scaling correctly you can get very rich conditions at WOT open loop, you can test this with a standard OBD2 device monitoring LTFT and actual AFR while doing a WOT run to redline. If your LTFT is for ex 10%++ and you have a rich AFR curve going for ex under 11-under 10:1 the gains from a new good calibration will be greater for that particular car. But if your AFRs are already in the mid 12- 13.8 in the upper rpms area the gains will be smaller. We are not talking huge HP numbers here but every small increase you can get is good combined with other mods (correct me if I´m wrong). The cobb ap with ATR will also give you ability to do a lot of other things like OMP rate, radiator fan start/stop adjustments, cel masking++. I say its worth the money :) |
eeh.. wtf this thread is 4years old
