I don't mind the EFIDude solution being out there and available. Unfortunately the lack of tact Lola displays relegates it to being a side show at best. He's trying to market it as a home brew solution that saves you a few bucks - this kind of thing works well for hacked firmwares on playstations, gameboys, etc. But when you risk several thousand dollars worth of vehicle parts, it's not something most will be willing to jump into.

The consumer wants a proven viable solution that delivers. Cost is only one part of the equation. If you give me some freeware firmware hex editor, and a dongle that can upload maps to my car, then tell me to have at it, I'll laugh in your face. There should be no reason to assume the accessport is not functional now just because the street tuner software isn't yet available. The pro tuner is good enough for now. I dare say that when the street tuner is available, most will use it for data logging and misc other crap and not take hold of the reigns themselves. We only have to look back at the simple days of emanage blue / canzoomers to see how easy it was for random people to screw things up and misunderstand things even when they're given complete instructions on what to do.

It takes time to develop these things, but Cobb Racing has a proven record and a proven solution, they just need to plug away at it till the RX-8 has the same tools the subbies have. Meanwhile Lola continues to bash them for being incomplete (yet they're the only viable solution right now) while holding some kind of half eaten moldy sandwich in his hands, and telling us it will be the best thing we've ever tasted since it's only a fraction of the price of the brand name sandwich store's product.

LOL. Really, I want there to be no hard feelings. I'm sorry that your experience was less than stellar and I hope you get it all worked out.
I just need to hit it home to other people that its not a simple thing that any of us are doing on either end of the equation.

Why are you throwing up? It's half the price of the regular sandwich.

Warranties rock. So, what are they telling you?

Dealer says "new engine"
i say "ok".....that was pretty much it....

mysql 04-02-2008 09:27 PM

chance, the ap didn't do squat to your engine. It's fairly difficult to damage it with a few pulls at 14 afr. I do that with compressed air and don't get detonation.

olddragger 04-02-2008 09:28 PM

Hey i want that process so I can get a new engine!

i didnt ask your opinion.....and my afrs were almost 16....it doesnt matter anyway...thats the past....
olddragger....as soon as the tech started my car everybody just started laughing.....i didnt get it....i was almost in tears....i hate this damn pt cruiser i drive now....

TeamRX8 04-02-2008 09:37 PM

I ran high 14 AFRs racing for several months without issue, I could easily see 15+ under WOT being an issue though

lol. This is a fine time for you to start actually reading what people are posting.

JFYI - if you don't like people replying to you on a public forum, you should reconsider posting here.

Here's a link to where you got into an accident.

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...48#post2363848

There is another one where you posted pictures.

The Access Port can not do this!

Now your engine is in the shop for a re-build.

Do think something else could be the problem?

I even tried to help you on the forum and it was clear to me you did not know what you were doing and that you did not follow instructions.

chancejat 04-02-2008 10:03 PM

yes that was my fender bender.....has nothing to do with any of this.....just got a new hood and bumper....i was already back to stock running like shit and when the accident happened...it just slowed me from getting to my dealer....yeah you told me to adjust my map to 2b but that is just trim adjustments....doesnt really have a major effect on afr..so i could tell from your input that you really had no idea what you were talking about......oh yeah, and i dont give a crap anymore....its all almost done and over with, why does everyone feel they have to argue with me???....(p.s. waiting for your clever response)

Uh, no. Its a completely different MAF recalibration. It affects everything.
This is why the first STFT is important.

re-flasher shootout? there isn't going to be much of a shootout if there's only one guy in the game. As mentioned earlier, it can change in two min or two decades, but it's crystal clear who's on the top of the game right now and with what history teaches us, I'd bet everything that the leader is just going to keep pulling away from the competition as more time goes by (because of his support and post history), whether something better or cheaper comes along OR not. There's always going to be envious competitors to those who are doing well, and no matter how perfect a product you sell is, there will always be those that have problems and cry about it. Nothing new here.

I lack tack. There is no denying that. I thought that was an asset on this forum.

I would not want to take a $400 risk (bricking a PCM and having it hauled off to the dealer on a flat bed to have WDT fix the lack of firmware) only to save $400 so your point is valid. I've just had the luxury of using the Dude ReFlashing enough to trust it and know both the Cobb and Dude tools have a recovery capability for incomplete flashes should the car battery crap out mid way.

The point is not so much does it work, but more like does anyone want to do their own tuning? I started a thread on the topic and I think the answer is no. That may be due to a general lack of interest or success in scaring people away by those that stand to profit by doing so. I DO NOT KNOW which, but the results are the same. There is no need to discuss something for which there is no interest.

morkusyambo 04-03-2008 10:44 AM

Lola, I just finished reading the last 2+ pages, and it seems you really are emphasizing the low cost and user-friendliness of the EFIdude. I have two questions:

If EFIdude is so affordable, why was Pettit charging $1200 for the reflash before this tool came out?

If this tool is so user-friendly and is now shipping, why don't any of the Pettit owners talk about what its doing for them on the forum, or what a great tool it has been?

Pretty simple actually.

actually Cobb's Street Tuner software does allow the individual to "play" with the tuning and has for years. The version that includes RX-8 support will be ready soon. So NONE of the talked about products actually allow an RX-8 owner to "play with tuning" at this time

Here are some pictures of the AccessTUNER software, taken right from the programming guides on www.cobbtuning.com.
This is the Subaru version, but the RX-8 version is basically identical.

I was just wanting to contrast the value of the interface versus something like the EFID software:
