Problems after cz updated the unit
 
Man this sucks, I had the unit working great when I first got it. Then I sent it in to get the capicitors and maps updated then sent back. I was testing it last night both with the cz unit on and off. First time with it on (did the brake thing and reset dsc), first gear went okay, then second when the rev fell under 3500 it took forever to get to 5k then it felt normal again after that. I was thinking okay hmm, let me try turning it off, when I did the car was way faster. Repeated the process same result when the rpms fall below 4-5k the cars exhaust note got louder but the car doesn't pick up. I checked the coils all 4 of them seems to be in perfect shape smooth without a scratch.

The funny thing is the before the updates the car was perfect, (shouldve listen to omicron when he said if it aint broke don't fix it). Now with the cz unit back along with the updated maps the car is a lot slower in the lower rpms. I know a lot of you is saying its a burnt coils but the coils are in the same shape it was when I checked it couple months ago. Good news is I do have the cable and the emanage software :) bad is I am completely clueless what to look for when it comes to tuning. Help is appreciated :)

Just to let you know,

You can have partial coil failures without having them completely fried. There would be no disfiguration of the coils themselves. You would need to pull the coils and test them according to the service manual to know for sure.

Wouldn't the coils affect the car when the unit is off also? Because when I had the unit turned off it ran fine. When it was on it was just a lot exhaust noise and not much acceleration.

The exact same thing happen to me with my unit. I just installed my Stage 1 back and also noted a loss in power from 4k and below. I even bought the heat sink to dissipate the heat from the coil packs. I installed the unit 3 times just to make sure it wasnt my fault. Also checked my coil packs after every install and reinstall. They are in perfect condition. Me too I also had no problems with my unit before I got the upgrade. Now atleast I know it's just not an isolated problem with my unit but possibly a technical problem as well. It sucks that most likely I have to send the unit back to get refixed once again.

Me too IZoomZoom, I'm in the same boat with you, have the cable and software but don't have any clue how to do any kind of map tuning. Maybe the problem with our cars is the car build date or the varience in building.

I hope its' not the coil packs But I doubt it because what are the chances of two members having the exact same problem.

i tryed speaking to maurice about getting a manual for his unit, but to no luck he said if you have a problem have the shop or yourself call him . maybe try and give him a call

The car could run fine without CZ installed and still have coil problems. The coils would still fire and run under normal conditions. CZ just makes it worse/noticeable. Without CZ, the leading plugs would even run the car without the secondary just fine. However, the problem gets worse over time, even without CZ, and eventually the car would start hesitating in stock condition also.


I would still advise testing the coils with a DMM as per the manual. As a test, you can also swap the leading and trailing coil packs.


I gave this same advice to another member who finally believed me and got new coil packs, and his car is fine now.

So how do I swap em? L1 with T1 or T2 or do you mean swapping L1 with L2?

If the cz unit would make the coil problem more noticeable, how come the car ran absolutely fine with the old unit? Could this possibly be a tuning problem? Where can I purchase new coil packs? (better ones)...

Well you're not the only one, me and another rx8 owner that I sent the unit along with has the same issue...

L1 to T1.. and L2 to T2 .. The first units did not have the ignition control module. Only 1.1..

I don't know about better coil packs.. you can get stock ones from trussville or rosenthal.

The problem is 2 fold I think, heat and weak stock coil packs, and additional load generated by the CZ unit.. there is supposed to be a fix ALREADY.. but CZ has not posted up the modifications needed to fix it as promised.. althought I think they are doing swap outs..

If the car is fine without CZ installed, I wouldn't swap them.

I would pull the lead one and test it.. you can probably get to it without moving the intake and air tube.

Test it according to the test in the shop manual. It is similar to testing a transistor.

I would not put the CZ unit back in unless you are sure you have the latest changes that were designed to fix this issue.. from maybe 3 weeks ago.

If you indeed have bad coils, you wouldnt have to replace them right away if you didnt want to.. but they could eventually fail anyway.

Swapping them merely lets the car run better when you experience the hesitation WITHOUT cz installed... if you install CZ and swap your coils you take the risk of damaging the traling coils too..

right now the cz unit is still in just off... but the cars runs like nothing is wrong with it. I will check the coils more thoroughly.

Well part of the latest fix for the coil packs was a heat sink, which was a piece of aluminum metal or some sort of metal that sits on the coil packs to dissipate the heat. I installed that on the coil packs no problem, and I actually have that on now my coil packs without stage 1 installed. It seems to be holding up just fine.

was that part of a recall that i missed? do you have any pics?

Not part of recall. It's a set of heat sinks Maurice sells for $15 that attach to the coils to help dissipate heat.
