cobb tuning question

i have a new cobb unit that came with the car. The mods i have are a k&n typhoon v2 intake, gutted cat and racing beat race exhaust on 93 octane. I was going to choose the best map to match my mods, But i have a check engine light from a bad 02 sensor (verified) . Is this a good idea to install the map with the faulty sensor?

your cel is probably from the gutted cat. i would not use cobbs maps. find a tuner that has experience with 8s and get a custom tune. you can also use the cobb to mask the cel

Emery_ 02-25-2013 11:51 AM

There is only 1 map that comes with the cobb which is the stage 1 map, unless you have some custom tunes by mm... The stage 1 according to some people on the forums has run too lean on their engines and you could risk ruining your engine running it. Some people say they've had no problems with the stage 1... For the little benefit you get from it, it's not worth it and are better off getting a tune for your car with your mods.

And how do you know the CEL is from a bad 02 sensor? You sure it isn't because of the gutted cat?

yea when i went to the shop he said it didnt come from the cat suprisingly. Possibly not gutted completelly) Regardless the cat will go, I plan on getting a hiflow cat, Im currently shopping for a reliable hiflow cat because the noise on mine is starting to get annoying when im cruising. I think i found a tuner that ilike so i think ill save it for the custom tune. The first tuner around me basically said he doesnt like to tune the 8 and usually just works with fd's so i rather not go to him

Sounds to me like whoever you spoke to at the shop doesn't know much. What reason did they give you to prove to you that it's not the catalyst code?

You might want to get rid of the cat asap considering it's making noise and you said it might not be completely gutted, sounds like you're asking for trouble with that...

A reliable hiflow cat is hard to find on the rx8, you're better off with a midpipe. There aren't many cats that last long on the 8 due to the high heat, if you cheap out on a cat it more than likely won't even last a couple thousand miles.

And the same thing goes for the tuner... You need someone who specifically knows how to tune rx8's or you're going to have problems. Look for the tuners we have around here on rx8club, first two that come to mind are mazdamaniac and kane.

Over 10,000 miles on my $100 Magnaflow 59959 .... just sayin'.

The only so-called performance map, there are others. Even a relative noob who does his homework can make simple yet useful mods (fan turn ons, MOP rates, etc.) if willing to do his homework.

The best performance mod the OP can make right now is to get rid of the Typhoon intake which will also likely complicate any future performance tuning.

I don't think he is willing to do any homework. The OP has been starting new threads over the last few days asking basic questions that are all over the site.

any suggestions on the cat? i might as well keep my cat if im getting a test pipe

Emery_ 02-25-2013 02:47 PM

HiFlite just gave you an option on a cat that he has had a good experience with. Only thing is I believe you need to buy the cat and have it welded onto a pipe. Which is still relatively cheap for a functional cat.

You need to look at the new to rx8 threads... Specifically RIWWP's. This site has a lot of information at your disposal, all you have to do is search. Go to google, and type "rx8club new to modding", and you'll find a very very useful thread. Using google to search through rx8club is very easy...

Access tuner software for cobb, which can be requested by cobb for free as long as you have an AP... But it's not recommend to try to tune without knowing. :)

But changing simple things on a tune like OMP rates, idle rpm, and cooling fan turn on temps can be changed easily.

AccessTUNER

From my knowledge i thought the "tuning software" was imposible to get unless your a tuner with a shop. & i read on here somewhere; mazdamaniac has some sort of deal with the accessport crew & not your average joe can get his hands on the tuning software. Which is why he charges what $300? for a custom tune.
But if what your saying is true. I will be buying that access port & learning myself for the future boost my 8 will take.

The v2 just has less issues... it's still a piece of crap and you have to throw it away.

It's not impossible... I have it, and I'm running a stock style custom map I made myself. TeamRx8 posted the link for the accesstuner request site in some thread...

He charges what he does because he knows what he's doing. Anyone can tune, but tuning the proper way and getting positive results without destroying your engine is the hard part.

idle issues?

bse50 02-26-2013 08:15 AM

Nope.
Fucked up ltft and stft because of a poorly designed MAF tube.
Plus a lot of hot air.

wcs 02-26-2013 09:14 AM

^^^^ Great now the OP's next post is going to be what is LTFT and STFT

Some much in this thread could have been found soooo easily.

@Carbon Fibre ... Emery is bang on .. the personal version of ATR is free if you own a Cobb AP. The Professional version of Access Tuner cost $$$ and Cobb will not sell it to just anyone. The Pro version also allows you to lock the Map to a vehicle this is what MM does.
What is unique to MM (Jeff) is that he is the only seller of the Cobb AP for the RX8.

So if you want a brand new Cobb AP for the RX8 you need to go thru Jeff (MazdaManiac)

TeamRX8 02-26-2013 10:28 AM

they'll sell it to anyone with a business license
