Cobb Stock Map vs MazdaManiac Map

Hey everyone, I was just curious, am I better off paying $600 and getting the Cobb AP from MM with the custom calibration or paying about $350 for a used Cobb AP and downloading the Cobb maps for our cars and the software? Is the MM map better than the Cobb map?

9krpmrx8 12-20-2013 11:55 AM

The MM map is custom to your car, the Cobb is not. There is no point really in getting a Cobb if you are not going to have it tuned professionally.

Respectfully disagree, IMO every 8 owner should have a Cobb.

Check, clear, disable DTC
Increase OMP
Lower Fan Speed
Data logging
Live gauge

To me is worth the price of 300, to get a good code reader is about 100 bucks nowadays alone.

I'll have to agree with Carbon8 on this one.

I love all the data it provides and the ability to read/clear codes.
However, even thou changing things like fan temps, OMP rates are relatively simple it still requires a custom map.
This isn't always palatable to some people.

So if you don't want to do that yourself or have a friend that knows how ...

and

data points do not interest you then ... yeah I suppose it's close to worthless.

You can upload your OE Map to ATR and edit it from their, so not entirely a custom map.

Data logging to me is a invaluable tool for diagnostics

SStoRX8 12-20-2013 12:25 PM

Oh okay I see what you guys are saying, yeah I did read in another thread that adjusting OMP rates and fan temps are simple. I have a bit of experience tuning my Cobalt ss, how different is the 8 when it comes to tuning? In other words, how difficult would it be to run the Cobb map and adjust from there?

yomomspimp06 12-20-2013 12:37 PM

it's not hard to create a custom tune yourself if you are patient. there are numerous threads on the subject and a handful of people here who know what they are doing. while spoonfeeding is out of the question if you show a genuine interest and basic knowledge there are a few of us willing to help. that's what the forum is for....

Hmm alright I'll go search for some threads about tuning myself, thanks man.

Carbon8 12-20-2013 12:58 PM

Don't use the Cobb map, it runs way to lean, and has had complications on a lot of cars. The ignition is different two, never bothered to look into but it is probably just as jacked up as the AFR. Always build off of your cars current map.

Very few RX-8 owners are dedicated enough to learn to tune. Most don't even bother downloading ATR, let alone learning how to make a tune, edit it, etc. And as a code reader/data viewer/logger it is mediocre at best, there are far better options that are much cheaper.

But if you are willing to spend hours upon hours learning how to tune then getting used one is the way to go, just make sure it is unlocked from the vehicle it was originally installed on.

And Carbon8 why would you lower your fan speed?

I wouldn't, but some people with the lack of conception on the purpose fans would.

Some random thoughts...

IMHO, get it professionally tuned. Too much to mess up. You end up paying, but you pay for a great deal of experience. disclaimer, I have a MM tune. I also have 95,000 miles on this engine, and it has several dozen track weekends on it. Runs very strong. Only issue is a leaking front main seal. That was not the tune, that was my daughter finding 3rd on the straight instead of 5th. A tune that would solve that would be grand.

But, for the lower price, you can up the OMP, make the fans come on earlier, and clean up a few things. But for a few hundred more, you get the car tuned well. I picked up about 1 MPG in the process. Over the past few years, that paid for the cobb and tune.

I use an UltraGauge for in the in car monitoring. Lots cheaper if you lose it.

SStoRX8 12-20-2013 06:05 PM

I may just pay the $600 then, might be the best way to go about tuning haha. Oh I have Torque Pro and an OBD adapter for monitoring, but the Cobb could block my cat code, thanks a lot guys.

I look at this from a risk point of view. I got things I know, that I am good at, and that I can share or sell access to. Tuning a rotary engine is not one of them. At my age, adding that knowledge is not how I want to spend the few hours a day I have to spend to begin to even learn what I do not know that I do not know.

Case in point, my tuner looked at the logs and told me to fix a small vacuum leak that I did not know that I had. That had to be fixed before the tune could progress. The leak was based on how I routed my oil catch can the year before. Never really showed up as a performance issue, but it did lean things out at part throttle.

Good luck.

MazdaManiac maps are better than Cobb"s maps. Spend the 600 dollars it will be worth it.

I have a MM Tune, and still in the process of tuning. The Cobb map is actually probably worse then your stock car map. If you have 1 upgrade, you cannot use the Cobb map. No telling what they tested it on. I had a Cobb for 1 year before using it cause I didn't have the $299 for a MM Tune. The guy is a brain and has tuned everything known to man.

Go easy on the triple strength Wankleberry flavor koolaid, bro ....

r0tor 12-29-2013 10:27 AM

Good grief... there is nothing magical about the MM tune. If your getting a cobb, you should have at least a basic understanding of what it does - and can replicate what MM does in about an hour which just some basic research.

Yeesh... no wonder I dont visit this board much anymore
