Mazdaedit after Cobb?

Quick question to the forum. I recently had my car flash tuned via the Cobb, but the tuner said that his Cobb equipped laptop was on its last legs and he didnt think there would be support much longer. Since I purchased a Mazdaedit license and Tactrix OpenPort, I wanted to try and see what I could do with that.

Unfortunately I have not had any luck getting the Mazdaedit software to connect to the ECU. Epifan customer support was borderline useless, even hostile. He says my OBD port is bad, but it works with the Cobb and it works with my handheld code scanner. I am getting an error “unable to get ECU SW partnumber” and “unable to get ECU VIN”.

Has anyone had luck using Mazdaedit, without unmarrying the Cobb?

Thank you
Chris

One way you might get M/E to work is to force a tune into it . Kinda risky but with enough information I've been able to do it effectively in the past .
You will, of course, lose the current tune .

Spoke to a buddy who has the pro version of Subaru edit or whatever it’s called. He confirmed nothing but errors when trying to read a Cobb modified ECU for a tune.

But ....you can probably force a file into the ecu .......so long as it's the right one for that ecu

You're most likely right, but that means starting over and abandoning what I have. I'm not ready to commit to that. I was trying to have my cake and eat it too.

Another data point, Versatune will not access a Racing Beat flashed ECU either.

I believe the Cobb tunes are encrypted, so any other tuning suite will just see garbage if it attempts to read the EPROM, this is to protect Cobb (and other calibrator's IP from exactly this situation). You're hoopajooped for getting the Cobb tune on ME, but you can start over with ME and gain greater flexibility from it going forward.

I'm still trying to decide between MazdaEdit and VersaTune. ME didn't impress me for the Miata, with lots of mis-labeled or misunderstood tables. I don't know ANYTHING about Versatune to determine if they'd be any better.

Um,

If your tuner locked the Cobb tune, it is not available to you. = hosed.

If you can load it in ATR (Access Tuner Race), the hard way is to print all the tables and copy the data over. Since he can no longer support, lean on the tuner to provide an unlocked tune, or print the tables for you. Then de-install the COBB and try to load Mazda Edit.

Best I got.

Thanks for the reply, 04. I was not aware he could unlock it and leave it in place. He said he is not familiar with Cobb anymore, so he may not be aware of that option. I’ll follow up with him this week.

He really does not need to do anything to the car, IF he has the original tune file. If all he has is the tune in the car, or in your AP, I am not sure if it can be recovered. All you want are the tables and calibrations (MAF, VE, Fuel Maps, brain is forgetting what else) then you will copy that data to a ME tune, likely with the same tables, making absolutely the row and column values are the same as well as the data.

NOTE, I have not done this, but it is my plan to help a friend out sometime in the future.
