This was actually said to me....

...20 y/o kid comes in the office in his blacked-out WRX, 'yeah, just had to have a new motor put it in'. Yeah? I ask? how come? Well, he sez, (shifting eyes secretively side to side) I have this Cobb AccessPort thing, and I downloaded a tune that boosted it to 22lbs boost. In a race with a BMW M3, he split a piston. He said (I kid you not) "Dude, I almost had him":lol2::lol2:

Download responsibly, AP owners, download responsibly :smoker:

to which the M3 owner quickly replied, "You almost had me? You never had me - you never had your car... Granny shiftin' not double clutchin' like you should. You're lucky that hundred shot of NOS didn't blow the welds on the intake! You almost had me?"

9krpmrx8 08-09-2010 05:05 PM

Meh, no way a stock WRX Turbo can run 22lbs of boost. And I doubt an EJ25 could handle it either. EJ20 maybe but even then 22psi is hard to believe.

Somebody had an Evo9 at the time trial event yesterday, claimed he was running 28 psig on E85

Fortunately he left before seeing me obliterate his times with my NA RX-8

LMFAO Well Jorge, given your SoCal bumper-to-bumper commute I s'pose that's true. ;)

My assistant had already gone there; I thought she was going to pee her pants. I was still in a suspended state of disbelief that someone actually did something this stupid and then uttered those words.

FWIW I'd take the M3 over the Subie in a heartbeat.

I actually tune Subarus with AP so I'm familiar with many of the potential problems that arise. He probably has an EJ205 WRX, so 02-05 model year.

I wonder if he used an actual Cobb map but didn't follow instructions for all the supporting mods and plumbing. He may have paid for an e-tune that ended up not being safe. His MAF may not have been scaled properly or there was another overboosting problem. Most Subaru owners use the OEM boost control system with either a factory or aftermarket solenoid, but the exhaust and all the plumbing have to be right for things to work consistently.

You know they run over 20psi from the factory right? Evo9's may be shitboxes but they are complete monsters. Give them respect.

He could have overboosted as I said before. Major overboost can occur on the stock turbo for all sorts of reasons. For other turbos, the IHI VF39 and the 16G maps supplied by Cobb crank the boost up to around 17psi. But if he didn't adjust the wastegate arm correctly or use the proper restricter in the boost control line he could have overboosted. If he ran a catless exhaust it could have overboosted and damaged something. I'm not sure what the overboost fuel cut would be set to though.

It depends what you mean by "handle." Yes they can take 22psi on a stock motor if it's not knocking. But that's just a measurement of boost, not a measurement of horsepower or mass airflow.

The guy may be a dumbass, but he also may have downloaded a legitimate tune for 23psi on whatever turbo he is running but something else went wrong. There are a gazillion e-tunes floating around and it's not uncommon to run that much boost on pump gas, either on the 2.0 or 2.5 motors, with the right turbo. The MAF scaling, wastegate solenoid duty cycle tables and gain tables, the restricter pill, and the wastegate arm all work together and all have to be right. Plenty of smart people have made mistakes or oversights on those cars and blown them up.

He's not a dumbass, more like a dumb kid with a great toy that he hasn't learned how to use yet and paid the price for it. I quizzed him on what else he had done to the car after uplaoading the Cobb tune, to which he quizzically replied "what do you mean?"

I'm getting him a book on turbos and tuning. He'll either be a fanboi or turn into a pretty smart tuner, or maybe somewhere in between.

Besides, show me anyone who know their car who says "Dude, I almost had him"
