Cheers, Hymee. |
One would think that taking out the insulation would be wrong. But remember that this mod was thought up by an Aussie and since gravity works different down there maybe it's some sort of Aussie VooDo from the Outback.
From an engineering point of view I am at a loss. But everyone says it works even up here on this side. ;) |
yea,
i got an email in already, the beta thing, been doing the beta thing for years with flt sims. and a suggestion. as to the green thing, between that and the syn fluid i put in the tranny the shifting is perrrrrrfect. hope to get down under early next year. hope not to come back. beers

Put my short shifter in last night - fantastic! Click here for my little report...
|
easiest fricken upgrade ever. 15 minutes.....yeah. Just went for a drive and 2nd to 3rd is awsome....4th to 5th is weird cause you don't have to shove the stick over anymore...it's almost like you're going into third again.
wow. Thanks for the DIY. |
My pleasure...... :) .
|
Excellent DIY Gomez!!! :ylsuper: I could have done the installation in about 20 minutes, except I broke that damn tab! hahaha
I also want to note the very high quality and craftsmanship of this AFE short shifter. Richard Paul, you did an excellant job! :score: Thanks Fanman for the hook-up! :) |
i gotta get me one...i tried it out on fanmans car and it was nice! :101384_l: :101384_l: :101384_l: :101384_l:
|
reverse is always a little tricky getting into..but the rest of the gears are fun.
|
what do u do if u break the tab???
|
Nothing...just say damn. I would assume you may have a rattle coming your way is all....
|
Actually, my dumb ass broke the tab, so I glued it back together with Gorilla Glue! So far, it's been holding and no rattles!
|
i will finally have one by next month! bout dam time...
|
Yep, you have been slack.... :)
Regards the demon tab, don't sweat too much if you break it. I know a few who have and no-one has reported any rattle problems. |
I managed to break the tab on Wildcard's car... and swapped his cover for mine (with a good tab still intact). I've had a rattle or two from it but don't think it will be hard to eliminate.
The trick to not breaking the tab is to follow Mazda's instructions and use a tape covered screwdriver between the console cover and fake aluminium strip to pry the cover up. I didn't do this on this one occasion and suffered the broken tab. |
Start from the front and you will not break the tab.
Very galant of you SCO to give him your cover. :icon_tup: |

I have to convince Gomez of it first. It's his thread not mine. Maybe he can try it and see if it works. Then he can discribe it better then I.
Busy Gomez?? Thing to Gomez are you there? |
Just got the shifter today and had to install it right away, no problems whatsoever. That problem tab seemed pretty sturdy on mine, I just yanked that piece and the two back clips came undone without a problem.
Also, I was rereading some of the earlier posts about the transmission noise some people had. Well, I was always aware of that noise myself, even with the stock shifter. I think the noise level is about the same, although the sound is slightly different for some reason (actually sounds better to me but maybe I was hallucinating). |
Oops, I did an error :(

I was doing some stuff today, scratching around my shifter/gearbox, and I noticed some cracks in the shifter retainer plate!
First pic. View from above. https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...id=69536&stc=1 Second pic. View on end to show the deformation. https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...id=69537&stc=1 Third pic. Viewed from down under. Why it went bad. I didn't ensure the tiny aligning dowell was in the alignment hole properly. Bad Hymee! https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...id=69538&stc=1 Please ensure you get it in the right place before tightening those bolts! Cheers, Hymee. Edit: Why are IMG tags off in this thread??? PS - Kunz had a problem removing the bolt adjacent to this pin... https://www.rx8club.com/australia-new-zealand-forum-37/uh-oh-82191/ |
You have strong arms Hymee...
I somehow learnt that personally :o: |
Whoops....that's gonna cost at least $5 to fix :D:
|
Before you screw it down Hymee you have to have it in the hole.
|
I not used to having to line up such a small pin in the hole before screwing.
|

Why don't you have the owner of the hole line it up for you. |

Naa, he just has to have a taper on the end.
|
Nice DIY, I Managed to break the tab, but hey-ho, fantastic shifter.
|
|
Awesome DIY, I just got mine installed with a Voodoo Pearl Magnum knob, and I love it. Shorter throw, comfortable knob, and it "clicks" into gear. No mush...I'll recommend this all day long. I wouldn't have ordered mine without all of the good comments on here, so I want to thank all of you.
|
Sweet... :)
|
Not to offend but does anybody else make a short shifter for the RX8? I think that price is high especially compared to other makes I put on my Acuras.
|
Mazdaspeed make one.....but it is significantly more expensive. That is your only other option.
|
You don't offend me and I will not hide it from you. You can get one right from Mazdaspeed. Of course it is more diffcult to install and doesn't improve the feel in any way. But then again it only costs $400.00. Pays yo money gets yo choice.
Oh yeh, they also don't have a warrenty much less a life of the car one. |

Reminds me of that scene in The Life of Brian where somebody said Jehova. :Eyecrazy: No worries LittleLebowski - you did mention you were not meaning to offend. |
LOL, I was doing my best not to respond ...
|
Agree with Gomez.
MazdaSpeed is way more expensive and some people used it before RP's like the RP's one better. If I remember correctly the Acura one made in US is $80 but it is simply a pulley handle - not a whole shaft replacement that machined beautifully by Richard |
Just installed my short shifter from axial flow .
Very easy install , feels awesome. thanks. thanks for the DIY , made it really simple  |
Installed mine tonight. Only took about 20 minutes. A very easy mod and great results!
|
For Richard.....Mazda are releasing a tech tip on how to remove the shifter cover!! It'll be interesting to see what they recommend :) .
|
They should read this thread first.
|
Hey, a little off-topic but my shifter cover area (you know, around the gearbox) has been acting weird lately...any pressure on it will cause it to make annoying 'creaking' sounds, like smashing potato chips or something. I don't know what caused this. Should I take off the cover and see what's goin on?

Check back earlier for my pics of an incorrectly aligned retainer plate. Cheers, Hymee. |
