I have a 2004 that I purchased last November. I have 1 working key, but the fob I was given has never worked. I replaced the battery with no success. Tester at the local auto parts store showed a weak, intermittent signal, so I chose to buy a new remote.

Both remotes are:
Visteon 41848
KPU41805
4238A-12076

When trying to program them, I follow the instructions here, and successfully get to the "Press any button on any single transmitter twice." step, but neither the old nor the new remotes cause any response when any button is pressed any number of times.

Have I missed something? Have I purchased the wrong fob? I'd prefer not to buy the flip key, since I only have one key and would need to purchase another from the dealer in order to program it.
My previous post will answer your questions. Yep, the one just above yours... You either buy a switchblade key or go to the dealer. The programming instructions in this thread will not work with the 2004 keychain FOB.

Ahh, blindness. Read through every page, and somehow missed the answer when it was plain as day on the last post.

Thank you.

I hope you find the right Switchblade if you decide to replace the keychain FOB. The information you need I have posted/provided is the previous page. Good Luck!

Yep, matched the numbers against one of your previous posts, got the right switchblade. Was waiting when I got back from my work trip Friday. Programmed on Saturday, and all went well.

Thank you.

eBay sells them, as well as the dealer but will cost more. You should read through the last three pages in this thread, it'll save you time asking questions because most of the common questions have been discussed previously.

I just bought a switchblade key and got it cut. Now when I go to program the transponder I have a slight problem. I do the first two keys just like the DIY says but when I put in the new key the security light keeps flashing and doesn't go out like it did on the first two. I haven't tried cranking it, but every time I try to program it it just keeps flashing when I put in the new key. Even if I take out the key and put it back in it just keeps flashing and doesn't go out like the other keys. Is this normal?

will the remote programming procedure work with an aftermarket keyless entry remote? my mazda remote broke. my rx-8 is an older model so the key and remote are separate.

Saphryn135 the first time I tried this procedure it didn't work for me either, turns out I was doing it too quickly,do the key switches and then the door catch 3 times and then wait couple secs while door lock/unlock twice and then I pressed the lock twice, unlock twice and boot twice, wait 30 sec and bobs yet uncle, and strata-r mine too was the seperate key and fob and I just bought a 2nd hand mazda switchblade key off eBay,the programming is simple enough although I've only got 1 working key at the mo so as yet cannot use the blade to start the engine so basically I've still got seperate key and fob at the mo,any help programming with 1 key would b appreciated by anyone tho :-)

How did you program the actual key?

You need two working key transponders to program additional keys. If you took the time to read this thread, there wouldn't need for this question to be asked... Go to the dealer, give your VIN, and fork out $190; they will provide a new set of key(s) programmed for you.

You have a 2004 OEM FOB? The programming instruction you are using from this thread will not work. Try replacing your battery first and see if it's any help.

Question 2 Qs

First off, thank you, Grace_Excel providing all the useful information! I have 2 questions:

1) I have a 2006, so I should get the KPU41788, instead of the KPU41805, correct?

2) Does this type of programming
method work with 2006?

Sorry if these sound like noob questions, and thank you in advance for your response!

You're welcome, to answer your questions: yes... And yes. Just make sure you purchase a Visteon not a Mitsubishi as a few members have mistakenly purchased.

Thumbs up

Thank you so much again! You are awesome!

Also, for the uncut key you would have to go to a locksmith or a Mazda dealership to have it cut, correct?

You can purchase a blank key blade in ebay(where I bought mine) and have a professional locksmith copy it. I went to Home Depot and the guy said he couldn't duplicate it. Or, head to the dealer and order one which will include the transponder pre-programmed that your car will recognize. I have success with my duplicate keys but I haven't had luck having mine recognize to work the transponder for my switchblade.

1. Insert key.
2. Turn from Lock position to On position 3 times.
3. Push button on Rear Driver's side Door Jamb 3 times. (Locks will start opening closing on their own)
4. Press the open or close button on each of your remotes 2 times each to associate them with your car.

That's to program the FOB key buttons to work with the car's locks and trunk; what I meant to say is I haven't been able to add the transponder for the key so I could use the switchblade to start the car.
