Do you know if this same method will work on the Mazda 3? My girlfriend just got one and we need a third key made. The key looks identical to the #1 key in the picture and i havent seen her other keys yet. The dealer wants $35 to program it and im hoping to do it on my own. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

I assume so... I saw the mazda mechanics use the "mazda" menu not the "mazda RX-8" menu. So I assume it is the same. Try anyway

Straight outta the book. Is this the tech guide for the RX-8. I'd love to get one, or at least a comprehensive owners manual. Any suggestions?

takashi has reason I used this method today to code a new key
it worked, second I used sthealth info to code a new beeper its works too
thanks folks my dealer ask me $85.00 for doing this.

my name is takaHAshi....

anyway I am glad to save you money. I wish there is a donate account for me --- I am sure Elara and Omi (the moderators) will be on my back then. ;)

Now all 3 are accepted by the car.

Tried this, but it doesn't work. :( I coded the key no problem, but the alarm part refuses to play...

Interesting thread first of all, I can't believe the prices dealerships are charging for this simple procedure... I'd be ticked if they were unsuccessful and billed me, only for me to do it myself in 5 minutes.

Now onto my personal gripe. I bought a used 2004 Tit. Gray with less than 10K miles. I only got one key and fob. No second key, second fob and no valet key. I am going to nicely request that I get these items again... but in case I don't... Can you run this procedure with only one key?

I see from most of the instructions it states 1st coded key, 2nd coded key. I of course only have one key. My assumption is that the progression and timing through ultimately the last uncoded key would work with one key... but that is only an assumption.

takahashi 03-10-2005 02:28 PM

No one have tried using the same key for the first coded key and second coded key.

I suppose you can try to do that.

Otherwise you might have to code that from the dealer for the 2nd key. I am sure there must be a machine that can do that..... because I suspect there is a fail safe mechanism just in case we lose all our keys. haha

BAM.. She took!!

You gotta be pretty quick though. I think that was my first two mistakes..

Use Key 1, turn to ON, wait till the key icon disappears and count 2 secs..

Quick.. pop in Key 2, turn to ON... wait till the key icon disappears, count to 2..

Quick!! Slam in the new rotary key, turn to ON, and voila!!! If the icon disappears, your key is CODED!!

My first two attempts, I took too long between key swaps. I waited until the icon went out then counted to 4 and then swapped keys.. too slow I think. Then when I used the rotary key and turned it to ON, the key icon just flashed real fast. I was worried that I f'd the car.. If it flashes like that, the key is not working..

GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

Thanks for your write-up RX-Nut... the mazda way followed to the letter was not working..but yours worked the first time... anyone wanting to do this.. don't use the book (word for word)...use this method... you just need to be quick about it.

thanks again!

my mazda dealer said they could get my both pieces for $47.00 and $42 to program it. why does it cost so much on that other site? it's like $180!

PaulieWalnuts 04-23-2005 02:51 PM

So will this will work for 04 owners who want to get the new 05 retractable key thing???

i'm almost positive they were talking about the 04 key and transmitter...not the 05....double check

Brice-RX8 05-04-2005 03:26 PM

I have only one key, and like someone above said has anyone tried to use one key for the first and second and then try to code the new key as #3? It would be nice not to have to pay the dealer 40 bucks for the coding of one extra key.

I can't see the reason that it will not work in the 05 keys.

i really don't see why it wouldn't work.. i think i may have in fact done it..but i can't remember.. i know one time trying it i accidently put in the same key twice.... nothing bad happened... so why not try it?

slaxer07 05-04-2005 11:13 PM

you can actually put the same key in however many times you like but the transciever still looks for 2 differant keys if you only have 1 your out of luck and have to use a scanner (wds or ngs+) to program them.

clmantis21 06-07-2005 01:59 AM

how many keys did everyone get? I only got 2 both black heads.

So it won't work using the same key twice? Is it possible to use the Valet key as the second one?

I recently lost one of my blackhead keys and am planning on getting the 05 switchblade

fray 06-07-2005 10:01 AM

clmantis21, you should have gotten three keys. 2 black and 1 gray. The gray is the valet key.

On my car (1 year lease return) it was still wrapped in the original plastic in the glove box book. Search for it.. it should be there, if it's not, I _HIGHLY_ recommend you go and get an additional key. You need two keys (valet counts) to add additional keys to the system, without having to pay an arm and a leg.

I am not sure if coding a new key with the same one will work. No one has confirm either or ... or has someone done it.

I know for a fact that the valvet key (grey one) cannot be used as a seperate key to code the new one.

Mazda Japan made each car with 2 normal key and 1 grey key. I will be concern if you get less than that since there will be a key somewhere in the local neighbourhood that can open your car, or even drive it

It's my understanding that the valet can be used as one of the 2 keys required to program a new key. I'm pretty sure that the only thing different about the valet key is the phyisical cut pattern. Check earlier in this thread and I think you'll find that information.

Mickeyblue 06-22-2005 06:33 AM

think they used the same procedure as Fords...we used to 'borrow' peoples cars at college and park them in different places.....yes we where very bored!

8 is enough 07-31-2005 05:37 PM

THE VALET KEY CAN BE USED TO AS ONE OF THE NEEDED KEYS TO REPROGRAM

I just did a recode for my flip key. The first time i tried to reprogram my key it did not work, but i gave it another shot and bam it worked. Takahasi you saved me $110. That is what my dealer wanted to charge to do what took me 10 mins.

You are welcome!
Cheque or money order to the usual place ;) if you like :p

I also got 2005 key and remote. It was a little pain to find someone to cut the key. Once cut, everything programmed just fine. Thanks a bunch.
