XEDE beta tester needed in SF Bay area
 
Hi guys,
We would like to release our XEDE system for the RX-8. But we need a local beta tester to try it out and provide us with feedback. For those who don't know, the XEDE is a plug-in interceptor-type programmable engine managment computer. It has sucessfully been used in well over a thousand EVO and Subaru applications. It is capable of controlling fuel (both closed and open-loop fueling), spark timing, boost (if applicable), aux outputs, water sprays, etc,. with respect to RPM, MAF, TPS, Knock signal, wideband AFR, etc,. Unlike other piggybacks, it is also capable of generating its own absolute outputs (like a stand alone) while still referencing off of whatever factory sensors you want to use/keep. In other words, it takes the best of both worlds without sacrificing drivability or power output. For more info on the XEDE, feel free to check out http://www.vishnutuning.com/xede_support_evo.htm.

What we are looking for is an RX8 that is either stock or mildly modified. No turbo'd cars just yet please. That is the next step. In exchange for a couple of days of testing your car, the owner will get a nice dinner at Hooters, free dyno tuning and a discount off the price of the XEDE. If it doesn't make any worthwhile power gains, we'll take it back at no charge and immediately drive to Hooters for us drown our collective sorrows in hot wings and beer.

So does this mean you'll start working on RX-8s? I've called your shop a couple times over the past few weeks asking about the possibility of doing a custom intake or dyno time and the answer I kept getting was "we don't really work on RX-8s".

That's the offical word that I was asking our sales/tech guys to give to customers until we got the XEDE adapted to the RX8. We didn't want to let the cat out of the bag until we had something to show. And now we do...

A heartfelt apology and an extra side of blue cheese with your hot wings ;) Seriously though, mechanical failure is always a possibility when modifying your car. With absolutely no certainty of the current state of your motor and the risk (albeit very small) associated with extracting extra power output, we can't assume the risk when dyno tuning any more than you can't assume the risk when running your car on the track. However, with the instruments (load bearing dyno, wideband, knock sensors, general experience, etc) we have at our disposal, I'm certain that the process can't be any safer. Especially compared to other popular tuning approaches. But if it is a risk that one still doesn't want to take, by no means modify your car.

what if you guys screw up? i dont mean to impune your ability but mistakes happen. if the car overheats on the dyno while you guys are doing this tuning and you cook a rotor you cant just say "oops sorry".

Sure they can. That's what the Dyno liability waiver is for at most (posibbly all) shops.

This is great. I love teh competition. My brother has this system on his Evo and loves it. Shiv, will the pricing be similar to the Evo model's? Either way this is great for anyone in the market for programmables. Both companies seem to be pretty reputable which is great. Can't wait for some price wars :p

We take a lot of precaution when dyno testing/tuning a car. One of them is monitoring and holding coolant and air intake temps constant. If something is getting away from us, we'll see it on our diagnostic tool well before it can do any harm. Also, with the XEDE, we are not remapping a car from scratch. Instead, we are simply modifying the factory fuel and timing curves. This process is gradual and an inherently safe if approached correctly. I'm a former FD3S owner so I'm pretty well aware with how to approach rotary tuning :)

Shiv, something to keep in mind is the gas tank recall and potential overheating issues regarding high revs on a stationary car. You'll need an extra blower (or two) pointed under the car cooling the cat, transmission and gas tank.

Yep... we always keep a big, low-mounted high velocity fan for exhaust system cooling. This is in addition to the fan(s) for radiator cooling. Then there's another one for exhaust evacuation out of the shop. My friends at Mazda already told me about the melting fuel tank issue :eek:

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad your brother likes his XEDE. Has he done the S.M.A.R.T. upgrade or does he run the standard XEDE set-up?

Just curious, besides the Emanage, what other ECU systems (standalone or piggyback) do RX8 owners use?

MazSport.net offers a custom MicroTech unit they call the Inteceptor-X. There's also the HKS pro system whose name eludes me.

I don't think he has the S.M.A.R.T. upgrade yet, but I am not sure. His car runs beautifully though, very nice system in my humble opinion. Like others said, the Interceptor by mazsport. Other than that, the canzoomer which is a funny emanage, but does its job I guess. I think that's about it.

I'm sure someone will volunteer. Seems like a very nice product, no reason for someone not to. There have to be a decent amount of RX8s over in SF. Just give it a few days I guess.

Damn, too bad I did not see this earlier. With me going to college soon, and freshman not allowing to have cars, I could of lend you my car for months lol. I guess you could call me stock, I have greddy sp2 exhaust and high-flow cat.
