wings w/downforce

I'm thinkin about the Carbon Creations NT-5 wing...i think it looks good. but will it hold the rear end on the ground well enough? here's the link if you guys want to see it.

Well enough for what? Street driving? (Unnecessary.) Autocross? (Negligible.) Track? (Maybe.) Drifting? (Unknown.)

that thing is huge

too big

RX8_ASR 04-21-2004 02:14 PM

well, that was just an idea...any suggestions?
i want something that looks good for show, but it will work if i'm havin at it.

Kain 04-21-2004 02:44 PM

the one you showed is huge-(to each their own) I have heard the mazdaspeed one does actually work at downforce- but is five times as expensive as the one you showed. I will be following this thread though casue I have had my 8 over 140 and even at 130 I could somewhat feel it lifting

Having at WHAT? What sort of use are you planning where you need the extra downforce? Sure a wing can provide downforce, especially if you crank up the angle of incidence - but EVERY wing on the market also adds extra drag, and the more downforce, the more drag - it's a direct relationship between drag and downforce.

Increased drag either takes extra power to overcome, or slows you down. Basically, on street cars where you don't need extra downforce (are you really cornering at the extreme limits at 80+ MPH? Below 80, the downforce will be negligible, but the drag will still be noticeable), the wings are just for show, and make NO performance benefit, only negatives.

Gordon

that wing is sweet...if you're a ricer wannabe.

XDEEDUBBX 04-21-2004 06:50 PM

not even being about a ricer wannabe, its just plain nasty!

x28 04-21-2004 08:39 PM

... mom ... what's that smell... u cooking rice?

mysql101 04-21-2004 09:48 PM

That spoiler doesn't make your car -look- like a ricer, it actually makes it a ricer.

Gyro 04-21-2004 09:57 PM

Does anyone remember the issue with the Audi TT?

Something about it becoming really unstable at high speed and a small spoiler was standard on all TT's after it was discovered.

Internet legend...or truth...??

bureau13 04-21-2004 10:08 PM

I'm pretty sure the Audi TT thing is true, but I don't think spoilers like that create downforce exactly. Its more about disrupting airflow that would otherwise create lift...I don't think a spoiler of that kind creates much drag...but aerodynamics is very far from a strong suit so if I've got that all wrong feel free to point it out.

that damn thing would knock down our mpg at least 3 miles!!! we all know we don't need it to get any lower!

AlexJ 04-22-2004 07:41 AM

Lip spoiler

The sole purpose of the small spoiler they added to the Audi was to disrupt air flow. There was no intent to add down force with it. Adding a wing for anything other then a racing application is worthless. (unless you like the look). Even in racing applications sizeing the wing is very important in low HP cars. (Sub 400HP) Many times on tracks with long straights the increased drag effects far out weigh the down force gains.

tommy12g 04-22-2004 07:46 AM

All i have to say to that wing!

You know... it's all personal, if you like the wing, go get it and ignore what others think! As for downforce? All these people saying there is no point, I would ask, based on what? Nobody has provided evidence. I am sure it will give you downforce, but it is a fair point to ask if you really need it.

If it makes you feel batter I got laughed off the S2ki forums for asking a serious question about side skirts. I added an aftermarket Airwalker style front lip because the car was lifting and becoming unsettled over 100mph. I added the front lip and my problem was solved, so wanted to know what benefits side skirts gave over cosmetics. Some jokers on there actually told me that my front lip was just a placebo and Side skirts do nothing but add looks. Wrong Guy's, the front lip provides some downforce and more importantly allows less air under the car. As for the sideskirts... who knows, but in the end I bought em anyway! lol

Sorry, but most members don't do 100mph on their daily commute. There is no real point to doing this unless your RX8 is a pure racecar that ONLY sees a track.

But then that would also mean that you're running on slicks, gutted your interior, and have giant advertising logos all over your exterior. This must also mean that you only care about 1/4 mile times and straight line performance to do your 100mph, so then why didn't you just get a 350z or STi?

Wings like this serve no purpose to the general public except to be gaudy (and look ridiculous).

darkducati 04-22-2004 11:51 AM

Here is the funny part. This whole ricer thing started when true performance enthusiasts were sick of people putting looks ahead of performance. More concerned about sound than power. More concerned about looking cool than going fast. And look at how it has come full circle. These guys are more concerned about calling someone a ricer or the way their car looks than performance. It's just hilarious. These people ARE ricers, they just have different taste. But the mentality IS the same, looks over performance. You won't use a wing that "MAY" produce 200lbs of downforce, because your to concerned about looking cool.

Sorry guys, but I don't give a shit what it looks like. Form follows function.

Um, exuse me, but I do 100mph during my morning and afternoon commute. And I hate drag racing.

BTW Who are you to talk about gaudy and rediculous with your red calipers and other tacked on garbage.

100mph every day, huh? so now when you're commuting, you are worried about the downforce? hmmm, that sounds, uh, stupid. On the occasion that I hit 100+ mph, my car never feels unstable in the least.

And tacked on garbage? Its OEM accessories, buddy, not an oversized erector set on my trunk. And colored calipers are hardly an argument for comparison to a ricer wing. sorry.

derwankel 04-22-2004 12:27 PM

Come on guys ... it's got to generate downforce ... what's it weigh? 3 ... 4 pounds? ... There's your downforce right there ;-)

I'm sorry. You are right. That wasn't very fair of me now was it. i should have said, OEM tacked on garbage. My appologies. I think they are very comparable. The "oversized erector set" can be functional. Red calipers do nothing but retain heat. If anything the "erector set" has more going for it than your calipers. Normally I would have said nothing, because I can respect others taste and their freedom to modify their car how they see fit. Just giving you a taste of your own medicine.
