why is the turbo XS exhaust so cheap?

Like the title says why is the exhaust so much cheaper the others. I just picked up a full 3" inch system for $500 with race pipe.

romycha1 07-29-2008 12:01 PM

I don't know... I think there was a thread about why though... just can't remember. Isn't that one super loud though?

Mr.&Mrs.Magic 07-29-2008 12:18 PM

yes it is super loud but with the silencers it should tone down to a bareable level.

Jedi54 07-29-2008 12:25 PM

because it comes with a free exhaust shroud melter. ;)

turbo xs exhaust was too short, would melt exhaust shrouds. I believe there's a few threads on it. I think some people added different tips to cure the problem.

Australian models seemed okay though. :scratchhe

I'd give ya a link but I"m (miserably) multi-tasking at work.

ahh!! way ahead of you:)

mysql 07-29-2008 01:14 PM

it wasn't always cheap. The exhaust was around $700 and the midpipe was around 300. It's a $1000 + shipping exhaust system.

2 years back they were asking for feedback, and everyone jumped on their case for making the exhaust tips so recessed. They're about 4" too short. This caused several member's rear exhaust shrouds to melt from the heat.

Long story short, people got on turboxs' case to lengthen the tips. TurboXS guys said they weren't interested in aesthetics and were going only for performance. They got pissed and said they'd discontinue the exhaust. Shortly after it was up for sale at $499 on their website. It has continued to be listed at that price for the last two years. So either they had a huge amount in stock, or they forgot about discontinuing it.

ndhoffma 07-29-2008 11:41 PM

Has anyone had problems with the melted bumper after extending the tips? I like the sound of the exhaust, but im thinking I'll have to extend the tips to save my bumper.

Also, does anyone know how much the exhaust weighs in comparison to the stock one?

tajabaho1 07-29-2008 11:45 PM

well, I have it on my car, all i can say is, it's wicked sick, it gives you that Insanity feel

you know, the kinds you get after killing someone, or like when you killed someone, or like when you're about to kill someone

4" too short.

Pretty nice, also that's a nice looking heat shield you made for them.

That's the mazda exhaust shroud shield thingies. They're way too expensive to buy new. Something like $220. I got them used from shinka123.

ORLY? Didn't even know Mazda made something like that. Good to know.... but I'm gonna see how bad of a job I can do trying to replicate it.

alnielsen 07-30-2008 09:42 AM

I have the Corksport catback and my exhaust shrouds started melting after I installed it. I got under the car with a Dremel tool and cut away enough to stop it. You don't notice the difference from the back of the car.

O'Renesis 07-30-2008 11:49 AM

My exhaust shrouds melted with the full TurboXS exhaust system, http://i510.photobucket.com/albums/s...rntShrouds.jpg
I replaced the tips, this is very easy to do. But this exhaust without a turbo fitted is very loud and can be very annoying on long journeys or at sustained high speeds.
On the positive side with the full system installed (no CAT) you can get 2' to 3' flames out the exhaust.

JOLIET WANKEL 07-30-2008 12:40 PM

I just did a google search for turboxs exhaust for rx-8 and found this: scroll all the way to the bottom. they're claiming the exhaust and midpipe together gave them 25 WHP!! and 8 ft/lbs of torque!! They're not specifying if these numbers were on a heavily modded car or what. I just don't think it's possible on a completely stock car without even the cobb accessport. Maybe with the Cobb we'd get gains like that with full catless exhaust. Thoughts anyone? Here's the link:

Yeah, I've never seen flames come out my exhaust either.

i have the OEM cat pipe with the cat gutted out and the MS cat-back, i backfire strong enough that you can feel it pop in the seats :)

ndhoffma 07-30-2008 01:36 PM

I too would be interested in finding out the types of tips.. they look really. I may just have them extend out the tips already on it though, Im cheap like that

mysql 07-30-2008 01:37 PM

my tips are dual walled stainless steel. I think they're SLP.

JOLIET WANKEL 07-30-2008 01:57 PM

just did a quick google search again. this time for 'SLP EXHAUST TIPS' and found only ones with 2.5 inch inlets. Don't we need ones with 3 inch inlets for the turboxs catback? I've found tips with 3 inch inlets in the past but I really like the way the SLP's look. Where do I find them? I found these that have a 3 inch inlet but they say 'for trucks'. They look like they'd work though.

On second thought, I don't think yours are 12 inches long like these. How long are yours on your car MYSQL?

those are like mine they were as long as my arm but I cut them down. It's not a simple hack and weld job ither takes quite a bit of thinking and some really damn precise measureing and cutting PM me if you want details. Here's a pic after

dhan 09-18-2008 09:27 PM

Finding a good looking tip is the problem haha :X.

Juansito 09-18-2008 09:40 PM

I was going to buy this exhaust 2.....Thanks to this thread -- I wont!

Musker 09-24-2008 05:36 PM

Dude this thread is a reason to buy the exhaust O_o

ndhoffma 09-25-2008 06:31 AM

Guess it could also be a reason not to..... By the time I paid to have the tips extended, it wasn't quite as cheap, but it still ended up cheap compared to most other exhausts.

I still love the exhaust though and would recommend it for the price (if you want loud), so long as you get the tips changed or extended out

on top of that it's still the only true 3" exhaust i know of.

What about Agency Power's? That's 3-inch.

RK 09-26-2008 12:53 PM

And the Borla exhaust. And the RX8store exhaust. Beyond those three there are a few more that are true 3" piped catbacks.

From my understanding all the other exhaust have bends and cuts that are smaller than 3" but what do I know.

newguy 09-28-2008 12:39 PM

$500 is still to much for catback, (a length of pipe and a muffler(s)?) mustang guys get dual exhaust, h pipe, mufflers for less than $500. My whole exhaust turbo-back(downpipe, test pipe, catback) on an eclipse was $400

$500 is what it costs from the header back. You get basically what you describe with the turboxs.

newguy 09-28-2008 12:47 PM

^ahh i see thanks, not too bad then.

Mr.&Mrs.Magic 10-01-2008 01:41 PM

jeeazzus!!! know I know why this exhaust is so cheap. Got the race pipe in yeasterday after 2 mths of waiting put it on today and tomorrow it will come off. I use to think it sounded pretty good but with the race pipe it sounds like crap and it's crazy loud!!!

mysql 10-01-2008 01:53 PM

it's not bad on a turbo. though still on the loud side.

for NA you really need a premuffler somewhere like mine (CC Insert). The one I have is straight through design but lowers the sound.

In NA form: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeMwINlHaPc

In turbo form: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEuBKufkeik

In terms of build quality, the turboxs is really well made. It's not a "cheap" exhaust, the cost is low however. They used to sell the catback for $700 and the midpipe for $300 like everyone else does.

I like it, others don't like it because of the sound. I find it very useful for my Turbo setup, comparing it to the borla the Borla sounds better but from my exp. the Agency is more free flowing. One suggestion would be to get gaskets for the agency system they don't come with them from Agency.

I wanted to always try the Tanabe System but it is rather pricey.

Mr.&Mrs.Magic 10-01-2008 04:03 PM

sound clips for the turboxs the first video is really for the bhr flywheel but it the only video i have with sound for the stock gutted cat back system

this is the sound with gutted cat and cat back turboxs system
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7BMAKut2-4

this is the sound with turboxs full system installed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW84IdCHLTw

you be the judge:tear:

kersh4w 10-01-2008 10:33 PM

the problem is you changed the tips out.

the turbo xs with the race pipe is pretty bearable as long as you have the silencers in. i commute 30 miles 1 way to class, with the silencers crusing at 80mph is no problem. you can hold conversations, listen to music, etc.

without the silencers other cars can hear the drone... :eyetwitch

i just left my exhaust shrouds off. hey.. its weight savings too.

yes yes tips must be refabed to fit!!. But will that trick the ecu into thinking I have a 2" exhaust insted of 3" which equals waist of money?
