Who has problems with there K&N Intake? Any one

Ok enough of all this arguing K&N Intake is good or it's not good for the RX-8. I want to know flat-out has anyone experienced problems after installing a K&N Typhoon Intake, and if so what are they? Describe in detail please. I have a K&N Intake and love it, but now after a month of having it I experience lots of rough idle and even idleing out and cutting off. I even was doing 102 at 8,000 RPMs in 4th gear and the engine light came on and the engine cut off. I hope that it's a problem some where else and can be solved without taking out my K&N, because I just love the noise it makes. So has anyone experienced any problems such as mine more specifically the engine cutting off in high RPMs with a K&N Intake.

Do you have the M flash yet? I have had the intake in since November and had the rough idle and the issues you talk about. Once I got the M flash, all went away.

I have the K&N for five months now
and have no rough idle or problems

I have had absolutely no problems. Did you install it correctly??

I have put on the typhoon and only have one nitpick about it, i seem to have a slight whistle about a 1/4" into the throttle travel. I can repeat it at any gear and any rpm, but all my clamps are dead tight, and all hoses are hooked up. the one thing i don't have is a small hose clamp for the topmost tube which runs to the oil filler neck. Could this be it? Anyone else have this problem. I almost wanna say it sounds as if the air going past the butterfly in the throttlebody is making a whistling that i may not have heard with the stock baffling. any ideas? It was a little loud at first but after living with it for a week i don't mind it so much.

I've had that happen to me once in the same situation. CELight came on, and engine went screwey, but i didn;t have an intake.

Check the condition of the O-ring on the MAF sensor. It is quite fragile and sometimes doesn't seal properly. Look for cracks and/or splits. Also, be sure not to let any foreign materials/liquids get on it as that will cause it to swell up and become distorted. Lastly, do not overtighten the sensor when you re-install it because that may warp the sensor body.

I have an appointment to get M flash tomorrow, hopefully it will fix everything.

Navybeardbb,

Did you get your heatshield from Vivid also? Is it the carbon fiber one? If not, what is it made of?

I got the M-flash friday and so far all the problems have stopped, the K&N intake seems to be taking in much more air when ideling, because you can hear it sucking in air when in neutral and I couldn't hear it as much in neutral before.

Navybeardbb 05-11-2004 02:34 AM

Yea i got it all from vivid. I had to get the chrom caues they said it was the only one that came with the heatshield. The heatshield is not carbon fiber...it's just metal, thin black metal.

I get that same whistle. I'm passing it off as normal. :D

The only thing that happens to me is when i push the clutch in at say 50MPH the engine starts to struggle to stay started and sometimes even dies??? what is the deal???

I have never had any problems with the K&N Typhoon. I had the unit installed for three months before I got the "M flash". I had no problems before, and have no problems now (1 month later). The only complaint I have is that the unit sounds like a wasp trapped in a metal bucket. It is really pretty loud. So loud that I noticed no change after moving to an aftermarket exhaust. All of the racket is coming from under the hood.

LOL this is all so true

:) :) I have not had any problems with my K&N. The noise factor is a bit much.

mikeb 07-27-2004 07:19 PM

It's only really loud at WOT in the higher RPMS. It's not that bad....

Slayer 07-28-2004 01:59 PM

I've had my K&N on before and after my M flash and have had no issues.

The noise isn't bad at all when driving normally, almost non-existent. Only when I'm heavy on the pedal does it get louder but this is all subjective to what you consider loud. For me the easy driving keeps it quiet and when it's time to scare a Z, I'm ready. :D
