whats the best you can do w/ $600 to increase acceleration

i'm an accelertion freak (more than top speed) and need some advice on what best i could do with $500 - 700 first effort to get better acceleration (&/or cornering) out of my std 6mt .....one day it'll be an SC, but thats a while off!

therm8 06-18-2005 06:49 PM

a lighter flywheel, used CanZoomer unit. that's probably it. and you'd probably have to tune the CZ yourself to get the most out of it.

rotorpr 06-19-2005 07:34 AM

Midpipe and Revi Intake, would be closer to $750 but also you will love the sound.

MintyFresh 06-19-2005 10:35 AM

what benefit does an aftermarket intake provide and how does REVi differ from the SR cold air intake

therm8 06-19-2005 11:10 AM

Well, the SR intake has recieved good reviews, and you'll find the Racing Beat has a very good reputation in the rotary community. At most you'd gain some mid-upper range power, 5-9hp (not necessarily at peak). Combined with a midpipe, which is also good for mid-upper range gains, and you could probably see 10-15hp gains (again not necessarily at peak). A flywheel does wonders to bring the revs up quicker, but labor cost may put it out of your current budget. The intake and midpipe you can install yourself. The midpipe can be very loud (particualarly with an aftermarket cat-back), but I've read it's not too bad with the stock cat-back, depending on if it has a cat. converter and/or resonator.

So far we have found the flywheel to be the biggest bang for the buck for what you want to achieve. Acceleration is immediately improved and very noticeable. Value wise the ACT prolite is the deal. the stock clutch is more than adequate if you are not trying to drag race the car.

zoom44 06-19-2005 11:57 AM

flywheel no doubt.

therm8 06-19-2005 12:09 PM

Yeah, but can you purchase + install a flywheel for $6-700. If you did it yourself, I could see it, but that's an involved job.

MintyFresh 06-19-2005 05:15 PM

Great, thanks....flywheel it is then. Am i better off going for the 9.9lb or the 13lb

r0tor 06-19-2005 05:54 PM

a midpipe will cause you to not pass emissions,
a flywheel will cost ~$1k if you don't have the tools to DIY and give you ~10hp

... a cz will get you twice that for the price you want

TR1GGERx1 06-19-2005 06:09 PM

NOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS haha

djgiron 06-19-2005 06:30 PM

Buy a yugo for $300 and everytime you start feeling like it is not accelerating fast enough for you, drive the yugo for a couple of days. Then once you get in your 8 you will feel instant acceleration :) See I also saved you $400 for you to put towards your AFSC!

Yes the cz will produce more HP, but that's at the upper RPM range right? A flywheel will give you benefits all the way from idle to redline. Average vs. peak and all that. Not that I have any personal experience with either.

A flywheel gives you higher gain with higher rpms and also decreases substantially in each higher gear with hardly no gain by 4th gear. A cz gives good power from 5600-9000 rpms in each gear.

excuse my lack of knowledge...

[QUOTE] out of my std 6mt

whats std stand for? or is that a typo? cuz im deff guessing its not sexual transmitted diesease lol...

Agree with zoom and rotor - a flywheel

MadDog 06-19-2005 09:03 PM

I've only seen one Dyno for the flywheel. I thought it was about 5HP gain. More than I thought it would be according to my calcs. My vote is for used CZ and a CanScan. You'll land 20HP for $600. My experience was that the CZ provided a much more noticable effect. But you know what they say about opinions...

Mikelikes2drive 06-20-2005 12:22 AM

trade in ur car for a srt4 -____-

but yah for the 8... a flywheel

itsallaboutgary 06-20-2005 02:43 AM

yeah. i agree w/ mike. ive driven my friends srt-4 and those are pretty quick. =X

redish 8 06-20-2005 04:19 AM

but for real i am drag race with a SRT-4 with my 8 stock by stock ofcause and i just lost about 0.1 sec in 1/4 miles
so SRT-4 is not that really acceleration fast than a RX8 ..... just me 2 cents

cgrx 06-20-2005 04:47 AM

srt-4 had a bad driver

exactly...

DreRX8 06-20-2005 07:39 AM

Yeah SRT-4 is 'rated' 0-60 at 5.9 but that is conservative--either way those cars trap higher than the RX8 so if he doesn't get you to 60 he will shortly pass you--given a decent driver in the SRT.

MadDog 06-20-2005 09:11 AM

The only time you are below 6000 RPM is at launch - if you are conservative. That's the only place where the flywheel would have more of an effect than tuning with the CZ. After the first half second, you will be in the RPM range where you can tune the CZ. Then you'll have your 20HP gain - in every gear. Or you could stay with the flywheel, have 5HP (which is a GENEROUS number) in first gear, 3HP in 2nd, and nothing measurable in the other gears. Either mod can be had for about the same price, counting labor for the flywheel install, if you're willing to buy used. The flywheel is a nice mod, but its not going to help anyone win a race.

I agree with the price but 10hp is not reality for this part...
