Yes but the flywheel will still have a bigger effect - especially in the lower gears .

You just need to compare the acceleration of the flywheel when going from 6000 to 9000 rpm vs that of the wheels to see what I mean . If anyone can be bothered to do the maths - good luck to them :)

Rotational energy is proportional to the square of angular velocity. Without looking up the moment of enertia of the stock flywheel, light weight flywheel, stock wheels, and some light weight wheels, you can run some basic numbers. If the tranny gear ratios are 3.538, 2.060, 1.404, 1, and 0.713 for fifth, you get some normalized rotational energies as follows: Set 9k rpms at end of first as 100% or 1.0. 9k in second is 295% of that or 2.95 factor higher. 3rd is 635% or 6.35 factor. Fourth 1252%, fifth 2462%. The rotational energy stored in the wheels increased exponentially at speed. The flywheel increases exponentially with RPM regardless of gear/car speed. Between 6k rpm and 9k rpm, the flywheel goes from 1.0/100% to 2.25/225% of the 6k reference rotational energy. Depending on the masses involved, it's easy to imagine the flywheel being awesome in first and second why the lighter wheels would be much favored in higher gears.

My favorite mod is almost always new tires, especially going from stock to decent tires.

My favorite mod by far is the Tokico adjustable shocks. :icon_tup:

I can't agree more maxx, the 040 must be the worse tire in the world... but then, changing tires is not a mod, for me...

two best things I did:
1) single outlet exhaust in the middle (forget the rear foglight) helped the low-end torque a lot. made my rx8 look different too...
2) final gear ratio along with some gear and differential modding. made my rx8 hit 9200rpm in 6th gear (!) on a flat road at a speed of 162mph (258kph)...

and I have, and used to have, flywheel, titanium exhaust, various catalysts, short shifter, various intakes, ce28 rims, brake and suspension upgrades...

Getting my Mazdaspeed flywheel installed by dealer for $380! Can't wait :)

Yup! The part, I bought from Tom @Rosenthal Mazda for $460! So..altogether, $840. Best mod for the price, yes? :)

I guess the rationale behind my choice is that my car is more appearence focused (20 inch wheels, tein s-tech, rb exhaust purely for sound) .. as apposed to straight line speed and cornering.

Being that this thread was raised in the Performance thread, I can see why flywheel is so popular. I actually don't have a flywheel.

The general claim in Australia is that the RX8 has a 0-100km/h time of 6.4 seconds.
Do we have estimated on the reduction a lightweight flywheel would make to this time?

I have done 5.85 :) 0-60mph which would be approx 6.0 o-100km/hr

but what else do you have done to the car? stock everything else?

Good runs I did previous to FW were up around 6.4 & I did several runs after just doing the FW & before any of the other mods so I'm pretty sure about the above statement.

After dumping a buch of money into my old (now wife's) 8 and then having to strip most of the parts of and sell--I'd say either the AFE/SS or Goodridge SS brake & clutch lines. Both are under $300 and you notice right away. For a few extra birds, the Tokico D-Spec Kits are sweet.

what the heck do Stainless Steel brake and clutch lines do?

As for me I did the AFE shortShifter and the flywheel and both are great instant notice / improvement mods.

what kind of flywheels is everyone installing?
