What is the single best 'mod' you have done to your 8?

Whats your favorite? I've driven my 8 for... 24k miles now, and aside from the 'install' of the ScangaugeII, I havent done anything to her at all.

What would you say is your favorite one thing you've done? Maybe I can plan my next step :D

peterisurhero 04-11-2007 10:20 PM

flywheel HANDS DOWN. by far the best mod you can get for the 8

Moostafa29 04-11-2007 10:24 PM

Turbo...when I had it.

carbonRX8 04-11-2007 10:29 PM

Moostafa, just IMO, the turbo is not a 'single' mod. It took me several modifications just to get that 'one' modification to work. I understand your point though.

ce28 wheels, and racingbrake bbk, lost me about 60lbs unsprung rotational wieght, but thats 2 ;)

Snow tires :ylsuper: Saved my ass many times. Other than that AFE shifter.

shaunv74 04-11-2007 11:09 PM

Springs and shocks by far. I have the flywheel but like the springs better.

GeTcRuNk 04-11-2007 11:20 PM

if you had a choice...very nice coilovers...or very nice clutch w/ flywheel??

djaaron07 04-11-2007 11:26 PM

Put a JL audio 12" sub in the trunk, cause the stock Bose speakers have shitty bass!

bureau13 04-11-2007 11:36 PM

I think I would have to say my Racing Beat sway bars...they have made a tremendous change in the way the car behaves during cornering.

I dont understand how people can say flywheel and short shifter over mods like exhaust, wheels & lowering.

In my opinion wheels & lowering combo would be the best mod.

Followed by a new exhaust system.

The rx8 already has a very good shift and a pretty light flywheel from factory.

Slight improvements to this IMO don't outweigh the look of lowered 8 rolling on nice wheels .. or the music produced through an aftermarket exhaust system.

each to their own . I would opt for the flywheel also because straight line performance is the one real weakness of the 8 .

ZoomZoomH 04-12-2007 12:28 AM

fumoto drain valve, it has more than paid for itself over and over and over again

swoope 04-12-2007 12:44 AM

flywheel / clutch or afe shifter. depending on how much you have to spend..

LionZoo 04-12-2007 01:37 AM

My gas pedal extension, designed by me, machined by Cornell Mini Baja. It makes heel and toe shifts much easier.

A close second if the Mazdaspeed strut tower brace; really stiffens up that brake pedal.

Excuse my ignorance but by approx how much better does a flywheel improve the straight line performance of the 8??

Brettus 04-12-2007 02:00 AM

Its worth about .3 - .4 secs on the 1/4 mile which is about 3 car lengths . Does not sound a lot but when you track the car it really helps .

Luftwaffle 04-12-2007 02:01 AM

Improving the thing between the wheel and the seat.

scsi 04-12-2007 03:15 AM

i think when people post their fav mod, perhaps they should post the other mods they have too so we can see what their fav is being compared to

swoope 04-12-2007 03:17 AM

read my sig...

the mods are in order of cost vs worth... and i live in fla..

and besides, proven by most manulfacures. most RX8 exhaust only give you around 2 peak horse power for at least 400 dollar. that is a bit too pricy in my opinion.
if anything, i would suggest to go for the flywheel unless you want to race in BSTOCK.
in you want to autocross it, get good wheels and tires.

jskup1 04-12-2007 04:10 AM

I would say the clear bra. The car is 2 years old and still looks the way it did driving off the showroom floor.

peloponisios 04-12-2007 04:26 AM

The gear conversion kit. It complimented all the money I've spent on mods and made it even more fun to drive.

In first gear it'll accelerate as if it had about 10-15 more HP than before...in 2nd gear, about 6-10...by 4th gear, there's no real advantage to a lightweight flywheel. :)

LiL BenNy 04-12-2007 11:48 AM

best mods decals and park bench spoiler... adds like 60whp......... =)

PhotoMunkey 04-12-2007 11:56 AM

Best first mod: Lightweight wheels and sticky tires!

First it doesn't cost a ton of labor to install and second, you'll see immediate improvement in acceleration AND in cornering.

Best second mod: lighter weight two-piece rotors and better brake pads. Again, an improvement in acceleration, and easy to install. Better braking never hurts.

Best third mod: lightweight exhaust... again, easy to install, saves weight on the chassis.

After these, THEN attack the flywheel/clutch combination. Seriously... why would anyone go through the stress of installing a flywheel when you can lose 4 lbs of weight per wheel with Enkei RPF-1s in a 19" size, and 6-7 lbs per wheel with an 18" size? More can be saved with the Mazdaspeed 18" forged aluminum or magnesium wheels, if you've got the money!

My Magnaflow exhaust saved about 15 lbs of weight at the rear of the car, and allows the engine to breathe better on the top end.

Aluminum hub brake rotors can save another 2 lbs of rotational mass, which is a lot when it comes to freeing up available horsepower. You can quickly save more rotational weight in the wheels and brake rotors, than with one flywheel... and when the thrill wears off, you can still do the flywheel later!

do you have a flywheel?? if you don't, then you shouldn't say anything. before i had mine, i thought it wouldn't make that big of a difference, but after installin it, you'll be amazed.

hey dude!! you have the feed 4.777 final drive?!?! how is it dude?? i've been trrying to get some info and feedback on this but no onne really has it. Sorry for the thread jacking, but do you mind telling me how it feels etc?? thanks man:)

PhotoMunkey 04-12-2007 12:00 PM

How many people have had the Mazdaspeed flywheel installed at a dealership? What's the average cost of the flywheel installation?

PhotoMunkey 04-12-2007 12:02 PM

That 4.77 rear drive has to make 2nd and 3rd gear feel AMAZING. I went from 3.27 to 3.73 on my Mustang and car woke up. 1st gear went by too fast then! Since first is only used to "get rolling" having better acceleration in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th is worth the effort for serious track days.

mine was installed when my clutch disc exploded - free labor.

scsi 04-12-2007 12:18 PM

+1 for lightweight wheels and good tires. better acceleration and braking, better cornering, better looks (if you get ones that look nice to you lol), can even yield better gas mileage :)

shaunv74 04-12-2007 01:15 PM

If you haven't noticed it really depends on what you want to improve.

Do you want to improve the look?

Do you want to improve the handling?

Do you want to improve the sound?

Do you want to improve the acceleration?

It's really up to you and what you want. We all have our opinions.

As far as DMP and his opinion of the flywheel he was there at the dyno day. He knows the truth about my car with the flywheel vs. Thebri with the MS intake, exhaust, and underdrive pulley.;)

It all added up to almost as much as Kris after he just pulled the room fuse...priceless.:)
