What to do about Revi ?
 

I'm leaning towards getting the Revi intake and ram scoop instead of the K&N intake. However the one major issue for me is that the K&N is CARB certified and the REVI isn't.

Several years from now when it comes time for a smog test and if the REVI still isnt CARB certified, would I have to remove the nose of the car again to reinstall the stock airfilter? Or can I keep the nose on for the reinstall ?

It is possible to remove the RB intake without removing the front bumper. They instruct you to remove the bumper because you need to take the VFAD out. You can remove the filter from the back of the box and reach your arm inside to undo the bolts holding the RB intake in. It's easy. RB is working to get the box approved. If you did want to pull the intake out for an inspection so you could reinstall the stock box, you wouldn't need to reinstall the VFAD to pass. You'd be fine. You'd probably pass with the RB box too.

Not only that but they just extended the time for smog inspection it is now like every 6 years. That and the REVi pretty much looks stock, so unless the smog certification inspector truly knows cars he will probably not even notice this on visual inspection.

Yeah, you just need to cover the big Racing Beat logo with a black sticker or something... :p

What's the worst that can happen? Even if they do notice it when you finally go to get it smogged, all you'll have to do is go home, swap it out for the normal one and you're set.

Like Fanman said: you don't have to smog your car very often anymore so it would be a minor inconvenience.

I was kinda sweating today. Had my first emmisions test with the 8 today, with the SR motorsports intake, high flow midpipe, and cat back exhaust. I was actually suprised when it passed.

Well, you have to use a few bits from the stock intake assembly when putting together the REVi. I'm not sure I'd want to do that just to pass that damned inspection (fortunately I'm in FL so I don't have that problem).

However it IS fairly stealthy and stockish looking in the engine bay, so it very well could go unnoticed during an inspection.

RB will apply for the CARB cert in due time.

The REVi already does pass requirements. Jim Langer said when I talked to him at RB about it that they are going to get it certified but they don't have to worry about it until 2008 when the first certificates will be required for the RX8. And apparently according to someone's post above that's been extended 6 years so it would be 2010 before we have to have a smog test certificate.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I wish RB would apply NOW for CARB status. What RB didn't consider is that vehicles from out of state registering in CA for the first time have to be smog checked. Yeah the person doing mine let it go, but it was written up as modified and tampered.

They have told me count less times they have applied for it.

This is a time consuming process. You can not apply anf get certified in three months.

Mine is up for inspection in July.

Just send RB an email for the update as they have promised there system will be certified.

I my self is just going to remove the sticker before inspection.

Wouldn't it just be easier to take out the revi and replace it with the stock box for the inspection?

Not if you a) Don't have it anymore or b) Just moved to CA and no freaking idea it was an issue.

They responded to me yesterday and apparently they have submitted an application to begin testing. I was told cost to do it is about $4k which is why smaller vendors dont apply even though they would qualify.

IMO the whole CARB thing is just another money grab by CA.

^^ yup smog/emission laws are ridiculous in california , they are even putting up trucks and devices to take an emission test while you're on the road. Ive seen a couple implemented already :( , of course i dont travel those roads anymore with my cat delete haha :)

Oh edit: I would get an intake with Carb certification because its "legal". I got pulled over by a cop (wasnt doing anything wrong just cruising) and he said to open up the hood so i did. Then he said that my exhaust/intake was modified and i quickly pointed out its carb legal. He still took me to those CHP inspector guys to have it inspected and it passed. I switched the exhaust back to stock though. In the end it wasted alot of my time , even if it was carb certified :banghead:
Oh and K&N sounds better imo if you're into louder sounds like me.

If a cop asked me to pop my hood I would either pop him in the mouth or tell him to pound sand based on my mood. He has no business asking to do a search of your vehicle (remember the 4th amendment) without your consent.

2nd to that. for the cost and the citations, i'd just getthe RB air ram and call it the day. the revi air box is a lot of $$ and its really just a fancy cone filter in a box that gives only modest gains.

it is however, a nice box. but i can't justify the cost for me. and i can see why RB wouldn't want to sucker in another what...$4k just for some certification. weren't they hit big time having their system flow tested, R&D'd? that must've already cost them a pretty penny.
