Viper Induction Kit, any info?

Hi guys,
Came across this product, Pipercross - Viper Cold Air Induction Kit, looks like a farely interesting product, but couldn't find much info about it. Does anyone here has any experience with this Kit??

Here's a pix of the product.

And a little more read up here.

Looks a bit like a vacuume cleaner hose with a "Typhoon" style element attached to it. :D

In other words, nope, never heard of it before today. Caveat Emptor!

With the way that intake is fashoned, it appears that it could be rigged to suck in the air through the hole in the front and through the existing 'outer' intake and second stage valve.

Not that this particular system is any less shady, but how much more beneficial would a setup like that be? You'd be guaranteed not to be sucking any engine bay air in while possibly utilizing the existing helmholtz tuning if done properly. (basically remove the restriction in the engine bay) Is the outer plumbing very restrictive?

I wish I had a shop where I could experiment with cars all day long... just for the sake of seeing what would happen.. maybe my next life.

Additional information (looks like an old product)

The technology used in the VIPER was first seen on the Lotus 340R. Now leading air induction specialists Pipercross are making it available for an ever increasing range of popular road cars.

The VIPER uses ‘velocity air force’ to direct cold air directly into the engine. The cold air feed takes air from behind the grill straight into the VIPER’s 100mm diameter inlet, swirling it through a unique Pipercross velocity filter contained within a carbon fibre heat shield, and then into a ram pipe to increase it’s pressure before feeding it into the induction system.

The carbon fibre heat shield protects the air charge from under bonnet heat, keeping it cool - and therefore more dense - thus introducing more oxygen into the combustion mixture, giving increased power.

The reverse flow technology filter and 150mm ram pipe make use of the physical phenomenon of air tending to move towards surface area's, creating more air flow on the edge rather than in the centre of the inlet. The unique design of the filter cone and the inlet 'tune' the moving air flow to increase its speed and therefore its pressure maximising the laminar air flow into the engine, again resulting in increased power.

The physics involved may sound a little complicated but the increase in power using a VIPER against a standard air box will be immediately evident. Just as obvious will be the VIPER's stunning looks - the carbon fibre heatshield connecting the polished alloy inlet to the 150mm rampipe will be the focal point of any engine bay!

The Pipercross VIPER Cold Air Induction Kit is now available for the Ford Probe 2.5L 24V (1994 onward).

BMC Filter also makes a similar product called the Carbon Dynamic Airbox. I think it is a solid idea but the results can vary pretty dramatically from one car to another (i.e. S2000 - 3 Hp gain, BMW M3 - 18 Hp gain). So until someone tries one I'm not sure how much it would help our cars.

So can u install in an rx-8,
anyone willing to test

rotarygod 02-04-2004 10:54 PM

I personally wouldn't waste my time with it.

rotarygod,

So when are you going to design a helmholtz tuned intake that blows the competition out of the water? You'd make a small fortune if you could pull it off. :D

rotarygod 02-05-2004 12:30 AM

After I buy an RX-8. Money is tight right now.

Speed Racer 02-05-2004 12:59 AM

I'm sure that you could find a few volunteers around Houston that would be willing to let you experiment with some new intake designs. I know that would jump at that opportunity if I happened to live closer or at least in the state. ;)
