Use smaller filter on intake?
I just installed my K&N intake and I’m on the fence about the sound. It is loud at times, which I don’t mind, except it’s not the sound I was hoping for – it almost sounds “cheap” IMO. My girlfriend isn’t too thrilled with it either. ;)
I was wondering if I went to a smaller filter would it diminish the sound? From K&N’s oval filter to a round tapered filter; for example RF-1035: http://www.kandn.com/images/m/RF-1035.jpg For reference: This is the filter that comes with the kit: http://www.kandn.com/images/m/RP-5104.jpg Any thoughts on this? Also, it does not necessarily have to be a K&N replacement filter… Thanks. |
I'm not sure the smaller filter will help. Give it a shot.

Less filtering area, more restrictive...
I like the Apexi they use on the 3rd gen, it's a dry element so no oily mess. It was tested and found to be the best in filtering capabilities as well as flow. |
How loud is the rotary extreme intake? They use a smaller filter.

I did a search on that as well. It seems it is loud as well. However their filter only looked a bit smaller than the K&N and it still had the oval shape.
I'm just wondering if a round tapered filter will change the sound... EDIT: Pic of RE intake... http://www.rotaryextreme.com/rx8intake-5.jpg |
If you do get an oval filter I suggest getting the one with an opening in the front. Air will go right in.

I would suggest... checking the threads on this. What you really want is an RE intake and to dynamat the interior of it. That'll cut your sound down and cut your heat as well...

Tried it with my typhoon. Using the HKS and Airnix filter elements. Needless to say I now have a green filter.

Can you give a little bit more details?
Any change in sound? Other performance changes, if any? Thanks. |
