Turbo question

I have a Garrett turbo but cant find a v-band flange for it anywhere. I even talked to the guys at ATP and they couldnt help me out. Here are a few pics and measurements and let me know where I can get a flange for this. Also do you think if I went with a .96 a/r that there would be to much lag. MY current turbo is basically the same as the mazdamaniac upgrade gt3071r.

That is one big clamp lip....damn :)

x8tuner44 03-08-2009 10:20 PM

yea I know and its screwin me up. Its either I find a damn flange or I either get a new turbo or get this one machined. I would get a new housing but I dont want to buy it and then it doesnt match up with my turbine wheel. A mazdamaniac turbo is too expensive, but I need something.

ATP was gonna be my guess... and if they can't help - I dunno.

Looks like a diesel truck turbo flange?? Might want to check that out.....otherwise nothing that about 30 minutes on a lathe wouldn't fix

arghx7 03-08-2009 11:01 PM

Just get a different turbine housing. Remove the 6 bolts and it will come right off. Then measure the turbine wheel exducer (the smaller measurement on the inside of the wheel) and major (the bigger measurement on the outside) and post it up. From those measurements you can determine what type of housing to buy from lists like this: http://turbocharged.com/catalog/twheel.html and this: http://turbocharged.com/catalog/thousing.html . Also post a pic of the turbine inlet flange--it looks like a T3 though. You don't normally run a .96 A/R on a T3 hotside, only a T4.

I do not recommend taking a lathe to it unless you are sure you can get it almost perfect. V-bands can leak if the two mating surfaces aren't in good condition.

thanks arghx7 and everyone else. I think I may just have to get it flatened out. I dont have money to buy a new housing.

Or you can buy the 3"discharge flange, take the turbo to a machine/weld shop and have them fabricate it on for you.

That discharge flange is flipping huge though

x8tuner44 03-09-2009 11:17 AM

Yea I wanted to wel it on at firs but there was no one around that could weld or braze stainless steel to cast iron.

x8tuner44 03-09-2009 12:19 PM

so does anyone thin a .96 a/r on the turbine housing is to big. Cause I dont want to much lag.

arghx7 03-09-2009 04:26 PM

They don't make an easily available .96 A/R T3 hotside that I know of, and it looks like you have a T3 style turbine wheel (you need to measure it). .82 is the biggest you are going to get, and it has to match the size of the wheel, which I would guess is something like a stage 3. Read the second link I posted.

x8tuner44 03-09-2009 09:31 PM

Yea I have all the measurements of the wheel. I measured those a while back when I was looking for the trim.

Ok well I am going to sell this turbo. And i am going to get a new one. I was thinking maybe the gt2860rs. The compressor map seems to be compatible with the 8.here are the specs:
Compressor::
- Wheel: 60mm w/ 62 trim
- Housing: .60 a/r

Turbine / Exhaust::
- Wheel: 53.85mm w/ 76 trim
- Housing A/R: .86
- Exhaust housing is 5-bolt style

Do you think that this turbo is to small and wont be able to give me power throughtout the powerband or should I stick with a gt3071r like the mazdamaniac kit.

Kane 03-10-2009 04:19 PM

GT3071R is honestly the smallest BB I would use; great for a street car; full boost at 3200 RPMS.

Might even jump to a GT3578 if you are looking for more than 350WHP.

Kane 03-10-2009 04:21 PM

Also, consider calling BNR...they might be able to get you a new hotside.

x8tuner44 03-10-2009 04:23 PM

Ok thanks kane. How about if I got the gt2860rs ported. Only asking about this turbo because I have a friend who is willing to sell it to be brand new for $200. Which I know is awsome.

Kane 03-10-2009 04:25 PM

It can be done sure. Again call BNR I am not sure about what components can be resued - modified or replaced to meet goals.

But if he can turn an TD06 into a 60-1.....he's gotta have skillz.

x8tuner44 03-10-2009 04:25 PM

Ok, thanks alot
