TURBO GUYS need help, very sketchy decision making here
 

anyone with turbo 8's or know alot about em....please help


i really want a turbo for the car, and I have the money.....heres what i'm sketchy about


1. reliability.....this is my only car, and I don't want to break something new each week

2. worth it.......wondering if the power is tunable, boost wise



i had a 2003 mustang gt, supercharged dyno proven 400hp.......loved the car, but every time i got on it, and raced I was afraid to break something........

when i first got the stang, i pushed it to hard several times in a row, and cracked a piston.....(ya ya iknow, no pistons here to wory about)

so every time after that I was worried that i would break something.....

if i turbo it, is there alot of other "upgrades" that I "have" to do.....??? fuel pumps , intake, stuff like that


and is it reliable, the motor that is............ am I going to have to worry about the motor no being able to take it ???

i'm not a crazy driver and don't ride 2nd gear around town doing 45......but i do like to get up and go, and I do autox the car....

i just got mine in.. the power difference is definatley worth it.. what a difference in performance. every gear i can pull my head back..
with the turbo, i put a new clutch and flywheel, and a shortshifter.... the feeling and response threw gears is great.

i did get the greddy turbo, and the psi is preset @7 which is the presure the engine can handle.

but yet no problems, if any ill let u know... but power wise GET IT

can the greddy turbo kit be installed in the automatic transmission too? thanks..

Turbos Been in my Car for about 2 mnths, No problems, dynoed 268rwhp, power is defenitly worth it, its what the car needs, im breakin tration from 1st to 3rd no problem

which kit did you buy, and where from..........and did you install yourself ?

There pretty much is only one kit out right now...The Greddy turbo kit. There are other ones coming out from SSR Engineering (Arizona)/Speed Force Racing (San Diego) as a joint project & PTP Motorsports (Dallas) is coming out with theirs as well. I'm in LA & I have had mine on for about 3 months now. I love the extra torque this kit gives. I got mine from www.city-speed.com. You can get it over at www.mazdaparts.com from Matt or www.rx8store.net from Jason, both are board vendors & both have very good service (mention you are a member of the board (& for Mazdaparts be sure to be a "gold" member.

did you get the kit from them ? if so, thats the cheapest i've seen it yet

Give the other 2 a call, I think you will be surprised. Matt & Jason are good guys & they will hook you up.

its awesome, you get over worrying after the first day or two

the best thing about it is that, since our car's have a flat torque curve, the torque gains apply in EVERY rpm - 6th gear on the highway and you'll still pull hard.

If you have the money get it ... you will be a little scared to get into it at first but like cretinx said once you get used to it , its amazing

i'm not worried about "not" liking it.............I loved the power on my mustang......but everytime I raced, got on it.....I was afraid of something breaking.........


I just don't know much about these motors and how "strong, and reliable" they are.....

If it breaks (probably wont if you don't play with the configs), that's a great excuse to get a streetport done =).

They've held 19 lbs of boost with stock internals.

GReddy runs at 4 without an exhaust.

I asked Greddy if their turbo kit would work on automatic and they said no.

Oryas there is a kit out there for the auto's but its a pretty penny and i cant remeber the name of the site it was on sorry

I believe re-amemiya has a turbo for the automatic RX-8. Not sure how much it costs though.

and how easy is a front driveway install.....i have sufficient motor knowledge

RotaryManiac is right. There is a turbokit available for the Automatic from www.re-amemiya.co.jp it costs about $4,756. The webpage is in mostly japanese so I cant read the page but I would imagine that it is not CARB certified which would be an issue for me since I live in CA.

Also the first RE-Amemiya turbo kit was for a RHD model, so you have to be very careful if it is even compatible with USA Model RX8's.

The turbo kit claims it is a bolt on, but a few of us have had to tune the kit after we got it. This is NOT a kit you can install in your driveway. The turbo is located behind your right wheel. You will definitely need a lift & the space where the turbo goes in is a very small area. I would NOT suggest this be done on a car in your driveway on jackstands.

I was planning on doing this myself in my driveway, on jackstands. This has me a little worried now. Has anyone else installed the turbo using only jackstands? How hard was it?

The re-amemiya website is in japanese but you can search "re-amemiya" in google and have the page translated. Just letting you know.

You should also check into upgrading your Metering Oil Pump from Racing Beat.....since you are very concerned about breaking something..this would help prevent that. From Racing Beat web site.

RX-8 Metering Oil Pump Modification (Flow Capacity Increase)

The Metering Oil Pump (MOP) supplies lubrication oil through fittings in the rotor housings to the rotor seals to reduce wear and improve sealing. Operation of the pump is controlled by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), which adjusts the MOP flow based on engine RPM and volumetric efficiency (load). This is accomplished by a "stepper" positioning motor on the MOP which positions an internal cam to one of the 60 positions (steps) based on a map of values in the PCM.

In a stock RX-8, the pump already runs at maximum flow at the high load/high RPM portion of the map. Thus, the only way to increase flow (for supercharged/turbocharged applications and racing) is to change the piston capacity of the pump.

Racing Beat offers a service to modify your stock metering oil pump to allow it to flow up to 31% more oil at the "60" step. (See a larger photo of the pump assembly on our test bench) By changing only the diameter of the larger piston (there are 2 pistons - a large and a small) the flow rate at idle and light throttle/low RPM is unchanged (at the lower steps the pump runs only on the small piston). Then, as RPM & load increase, so does oil flow, providing the necessary lubrication for high load/high RPM.

This means that, when using this modification in street applications, there is little change in oil consumption up through cruise power - but extra flow is there at higher RPM and load when you need it!

This modification is ONLY intended for boosted engines or those engaged in continued hard use (road racing, etc.). Mazda has established the correct flow for the stock engine in street use. This modification is only performed on pumps that are in good mechanical condition and operating properly, and we flow test every pump to prove performance before delivery. Modification time is one week or less.

the greddy turbo is not intended for use on the AT rx-8's. from what i understand, the reasoning behind this is the fact that mazda had to de tune the renesis on the auto because they kept burning through the torque convertors. so installing the turbo on an AT would probably lead to costly transmission problems and or costly modifications to the AT transmission to keep it from being FUBARed.
