transmission modification for the 6 speed

Here is the deal. I bought am RX8 that had a couple mods already, K&N intake and the borla exhaust. When I bought it I also knew there was a grind going into 4th gear sometimes, which was no big deal cause at 27,000 miles it was still under warranty. So I get the token run around from the dealership, took 5 weeks for them to get in a 4th gear syncronizer, then I take it up there and they tell me they will have it 2 days. Well 4 weeks later they now want $800 from my to fix the transmission BECAUSE they say it has been tampered with. They showed me where a ball and spring was taken out of 4th gear to make the gear longer? There was also nail poish on the neutral sensor cap where when it was taken off it could be put back on in the right spot. I am so not technical about this sorry. So my question is is that a normal thing to mess with the transmissions on these cars? I mean the wheel wells were taken off this car even so I am afraid the previous owner thought he was Mr. race car, even though he insists the car was too high $$ of a car to be messed with. what I have is a car in pieces at the dealership that now insists they want $$ for what I thought was going to be warranty work, so I am not prepared for that bill AT ALL. Should I just assume the dealership is right and this car has been tamered with voiding my warranty?

If the trans was modded it should have been obvious way before they opened it up, and I have never heard of this mod (if you can call it that). Did you buy this car from a private party or a dealership?

I think you are going to hava a long fight with the dealership, but don't give up right away. Good luck.

More than likely somebody worked on it and didn't do a good job

I know of dealership techs who worked on transmissions and left the sping balls out, it's no performance mod, it's just a plain f up

never heard of any kind of mod like this.

I say fight with the dealership because they are just trying to not honor the warranty.

wow you guys in usa seems to have bad dealership! here in canada, they change the engine and tranny one day without even telling me! free! i was third owner, no papers, no oil change proof! i even have 120 000km.....

showinufftuff 12-09-2009 12:34 PM

I bought the car from an individual. I just am not sure what to think. the teck showed me my tranny in pieces, and stated to my husband and I that someone had removed the ball and overcheck spring thereby allowing further shift travel. I just don't know what to thing. I know according to the state law they have my car in pieces and now they want money, and I was never given an estimate, cause it was suppoed to be warranty work...I know i have a fight on my hands.

It could also have come from t he factory with those pieces missing. F'n stealership. This is under warentee still right? They should just STFU and fix it.

Did the previous owner inform you about the transmission "modification"? Because if he said that the car was still under warranty then he told you nothing about the f*** up and he is in plain tort.

call mazda of north america and see if there is anything they can do.

be sure to mention that this is (your first mazda and you want a good impression of mazdas so you can keep coming back) or (you are a long returning mazda customer and outraged that this happened).

and wtf, i have never heard of this mod. imo, sounds like they are blowing steam out of their ass. longer shift travel? is it the opposite of a short shirt kit? a long shift kit? that is ridiculous. no one would do that. i think its a fuck up.

shazy 12-13-2009 12:50 PM

Epic Fail.
Why would you want a longer shift? Dumbest thing I've heard.

ZumnRx8 12-13-2009 12:56 PM

shoulda bought an AT ;) ................JK

chickenwafer 12-13-2009 10:12 PM

That is no performance modification, it's a failure and the cause of your grind. Hell, my detent ball fell out without me opening the transmission up- it just came out.

Don't let them intimidate you, go back and talk to the Service Manager and them you want it fixed under warranty. If not you're going to have to call Mazda North America.
