Third port for exhaust tip on factory muffler behind rotary symbol?

Have any of you seen that extra welded piece on the factory muffler in the spot where the rotary symbol is on the bumper? Seems like someone welded that piece/ cap there as an extra effort. Anyone have a take on this? Was this for a 3rd exhaust tip option that never made it to the general public? Or is it an option in Japan? Am I crazy?

No, it was just a custom job someone did that. it eliminates the the actual factory exhaust on the sides. its just a single pipe to the middle with a custom shape outlet.

I think he / she :) is asking why that cap is on the stock exhaust, I do not know.

my guess is it was cheaper for mazda to build a can...cut/drill a hole in it...and insert the sound deadening material connected to a metal cap...then weld the cap

than

creating the sound deadening material and then carefully finishing the can and closing it

a guess but I've done metalsmithing work before and to save time I would have done the same thing :D, especially with something that is out of site to almost everyone :)

ohhhh ok. but does any one have a picture of that custom center exhaust?

truemagellen 10-24-2005 10:51 AM

the custom center exhaust is a poor idea unless you really open up the area

you need air space from the bumper or it will melt very quickly

mike1324a 10-24-2005 10:55 AM

yeah. i dont remember who did it but they did and they said it had better flow than most.

It's about the only thing you can do with an extra OEM exhaust. :jump:

Expo, that seems like a pretty good answer.

Just seems strange that it is in that location. Looking forward to taking that out!!

zoom44 10-25-2005 11:44 AM

could it be for sound tuning? i have seen extra short tube on some aftermarket exhausts for that purpose.

StealthTL 10-25-2005 12:11 PM

Not.....

If you check the location, you will see it is the "other end" of the input tubing - probably stabs right thru the muffler like that for strength, then welded in place at BOTH ends.

The inlet has holes along it's sides for the gasses. If you removed the cap, you would have a direct "no muffler" outlet, very loud and nasty. :Kill1:
