Thinking adding a turbo any tips?
 
04 rx8 97k on the board about 60k on the engine heres my build list so far looking for peoples input. Im on top of oil changes and maintanice for the car. So oil and tune ups done regurally.

Esmeril hp turbo kit
Cobb acessport (mazdamaniac)
Aem boost gauges (oil afr boost)
bhr ignition kit
Omp upgrade kit for premix
Greddy oil pan if i need it for the turbo cooling esmerils kit doesnt explain oil feed for the turbo or it doesnt have it? Or i missed it.
I already have a high flow exhaust system came with car not sure what kind it is if it doesnt come up to par for the build ill replace with something better.

And of course another engine because itll probably blow right?

Any input or comments are appreciated my first build hopefully it goes well.

The tune is the most important part. MM has done a lot of rx8s, but nothing beats the in person experience.

Research research research. I have not read a lot about the Esmeril kit. New or used? What's your fuel plan? Where do you live? If you live somewhere warm, look into a radiator upgrade. Turbo motors make more heat than stock motors.

* check every one of those BHR coils with an HEI tester before you go into boost. I'm actually starting to think up to half of them are faulty from new .

Oh yeah im aiming for better acceleration more horses more fun to drive pretty much something i can enjoy on the roads and maybe around a track alot i wont be driving it a whole lot since i have a seperate vehicle for work id be happy with 350 horses but people claim to get beyond 400 reliably with the kit ill go as far as itkl take my safely not aiming to overboost and blow it up but if it happens it happens

I chose mm for that reason if hes still offering the mapp service i live in new england so we get all the extremes probably going to go with new kit and if i need a bigger rad ill do it but in new england i might be able to get away with better bay ventalation right? Fuel plan keeping it 93 pump the kit comes with some upgrades fuel wise an upgraded set of the primary injectors and you use your current primarys as the secondarys if im not mistaken and then it comes with a better pump i believe... if not ill shop around for a good one

Probably doing everything but tuning myself. And thanks for the tip ill check them out when i order them

Is mm still selling accessports with the service? And yeah i have been looking around for as much info on the esmeril kit it sounds good so far i havent seen many bad things about them simple to install and comes with just about everything needed to put it in even a base map tune if i upgrade ecu.

Wow huge differnce vetween good and bad reviews... if i dont go with esmeril what other kits are there?

Search, there are many threads that talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each kit available. All of them require customization so do your home work. Any questions you can even dream of asking have already been asked and and answered here.

Im still doing my homework on it just asking for peoples opinion on it like i said its my first build so im searching and asking for personal experinces with any of the products im interested in or if theres better options if im missing anything. Etc. Just putting out feelers to try and get to some more useful/helpful knowledge quicker.

There is no kit on the market that 9k will agree is good . And he is right to a point . Just gotta pick the one that is least bad and fix the issues .

I think the Greddy is a good kit after some fairly simple modifications and I think the PTP kit can be made good fairly easily. The SFR can be made good as well with a good internally gated turbo I think. But none are for the faint of heart that is for sure. Just follow the K.I.S.S rule. And trust me, I speak from experience, :lol:

Do they still sell the greddy kit new? I was looking into it before seemed like you need to improve on almost the whole kit to make it work
And im going to look into the sfr kit

I was under the impression that the bhr coils/ignition system was the best you could possibly buy?

It is, we have only had one set locally with coil failures in almost 8 years and BHR replaced them without hesitation. My personal kit was installed in 2009, I have never had an issue. Quite a few of us installed our kits around that time actually. There have been thousands of those kits sold over the past 7 years, everything has a failure rate and in the case of the BHR kit, it is very low. I have installed a dozen BHR kits at least.

Yeah the external wastegate setup on that is less than ideal IMO, but better than other top mount kits.

There is also a recent addition by SakeBomb Garage that uses Mercury IGN-1A coils.
About $650 in group buys.

Possibly dumb questions but do you need internal and external or just one wastegate would going with a better external one be better or just get rid of the external and get a turbo thats internally gated
