T or F on pulley... and SAFCII question
 

I heard from a guy that the underdrive pulleys for the rx8 will dramatically reduce the life of the car... is this true? has anyone heard this?
or on any car perhaps?

lastly,
if the SAFCII is much like the canzoomer, except for the fact that to install the safcII, you have to slice wires, why does everyone on this forum hate the SAFCII so much if you can basically tune the AFR and THROTTLE in the convenience of the good-looking unit itself -- instead of relying on laptops and CANScan and stuff like that? Does any technical genius want to enlighten me please??

i'm studying for finals right now, and Johns Hopkins isn't quite the easiest school to do well in... so i'm struggling -- but my rx8 relieves me quite a bit... so anyone want to help me out on this?

under drive pulleys can put more stress on any of the components they are for - reducing the life of those components. ive heard it can also strees the internal gears/bearings of the rotary. someone else with more rotary experience can speak to that.


as far as what i quoted above- can you direct me to posts/threads where everyone is hating the SAFCII?

i can't really direct it... b/c i dont' recall when i saw it. it was a while back. but someone posted SAFCII or Canzoomer, and they all barked to go with the cz b/c it's much more advanced and much more tuning specific... perhaps they're correct?

but the SAFCII looks so pretty... don't you agree zoom?

havent seen one to compare. but if you search with SAFCII you find 3 threads. this one and 2 others. i just read them. no hate that i can see. just some straight talk about what it can or cant do in comparison to the cz/emanage. The SAFC does not seem to be very user friendly or workable in comparison. from the little research ive done recently on the unichip option it seems a better choice than the safcii

i have a slower comp so i don't like to search too much... but my friend has a vafcII - for his highly tuned prelude... and for him it's quick tune and play... literally 5min to adjust throttle and vtec... i wish our cars had that option..

Before I had my turbo installed, I had the SAFC II installed by Acosta in Wallington, NJ. I believe that they have done one of the few installs that exist. When they did the install for my car, ApexI did not even have a wiring diagram for the RX-8 or support it. It was easy to set and worked great for me. I had added some fuel at low end to smooth out the idle and leaned out at top end. It is very important that you have a good wide band A/F gauge to tune. I have the AEM which is very accurate but expensive. I have had the SAFCII removed since the turbo install, but I still have it to sell.

i think the main problem would be the install.. i dont' want to mess with it really. but how much are you selling for? and is it the blue face or the spec. ed. black and white face?

I have never heard that Underdrive pulleys would shorten the life of accessories. The alternator, water pump and AC are spinning slower thus will last longer over the life of a car with underdrive pulleys.

As for the pulley hurting the engine...I have never heard that either. I have heard that Underdrive pulleys on Piston engines can hurt those bearing because the stock crank pulley has a heavy harmonic balancer built into them....I hear this is especially true for BMWs. On my 300ZX, I pulled off the stock crank pulley and it must have weighed ~ 20lbs and replaced it with an aluminum lightweight/underdrive pulley (~5 lbs) and no issues ~ 3 years later. The 8 has NO Harmonic balancer..at least not in the crank pulley.

My guess is that the weight difference between the RX8's stock crank pulley and an underdrive light weight pulley is less then 1 lb.

The crank pulley on the 8 is so light anyway, I can not see any issues at all using an underdrive pulley on a Rotary engine.

I have had the SR pulleys for about 30K miles with no problems, except for the sub-standard belt included with the kit. If one were to get the pulleys I would suggest a swap to a good brand belt like Gates, or similar.

the sacfc11 has a smaller map size and no ignition advance capabilities... but the display is nice
