Sportbike Rider needs some guidance on RX8

I am sure I could search for all of this but I am new and don't know what I am searching for. I am a bike rider, my main focus is my R1 and R6 (crotch rockets for those not knowing). I am a member of another forum for R1's so I know this may be annoying to some of you. This is what I am looking for.

I have an RX8 MT (obviously why else would I be here) All that is done to it is tint and some new rims. I started to search the internet for basic mods then thought maybe a forum existed and sure enough here it is. Never worked too much on cars or concentrated on them for that matter. When I saw the RX8 I couldn't resist. Best looking car to my appeal in a while. I just want to know if someone could break me down the basics to up the hp. I am guessing K&N or Equivalent filter and new pipes (exhaust, oops not a bike). Do I want a full pipe to the headers (does this car have headers?) I am a newbie folks. Sorry again if this is an annoyance. I don't have as much time to spend on this car as I do with my Bike. Who knows that may change.

PS, it hasn't happened yet, but what is the story on racing a Stock RX8 against a Stock 2004 mustang and a stock 2005 mustang? I live in Detroit, I WILL be seeing these cars alot.

Thanks in advance guys,
Eric

If you want performance gains...buy a turbo.

If you want a little gain, buy a RacingBeat intake (no other intake works), hi-flow cat, Exhaust, and Canzoomer (search the forums on the last one). With those things, you might see a solid 200-210hp at the rear wheels. Plenty for a 13 second E/T if you beat it a little. :)

Don't race any mustangs newer than about 1993 if you want a chance to win a drag race. :(

Thanks a million, now I can start my searches.

Damn them Mustangs. Beat the snot out of a V6 Mustang the other day. Thought it was a V8, turns out the kid just put a new pipe for dual exhaust.

So will the RX8 never be able to drag against a Mustang? What is the Max HP to get out of the MT RX8?

Not 'never' - just not likely. There is no 'max' HP for the RX8 because nobody has pushed the limits. It's quite easy, however, to get your RX8 to a solid 300 hp, with the use of a GReddy turbo system... $3000...give or take.

So looking up the Greddy Turbo will tell me everything I need to get it installed?

I appreciate it dmp. I hate them damn Mustangs. Everyone has them around here. But my car turns heads a lot more than they. Not to many of them around here. You see more outside of Detroit. Again thank you.

I think the kit would do great -

fwiw, I ride a zx6r. :)

SilverBullitt 04-19-2005 01:19 PM

Here's the Turbo kit: http://www.hopupracing.com/grtukitmarx.html

But, if your not ready to install a Turbo... go with Racing Beat Revi Intake + Cat back.

Very good quality products.

Gotta love the bikes. Always got the girls to turn their heads at them. Now this car is doing the same. Do you know if they plan on making this car for a while or are they going to stop like they did with the RX7?

Can I ask you a question Goat?

Which is more fun your bike or your car?

oh, you could probably beat a mustang in a drag race if the other driver wasn't so good and you drove exceptionally. There are a lot of variables, but yes, in general the mustang would be faster.

projectcar 04-19-2005 06:02 PM

o also

titaniumgrey 04-19-2005 06:46 PM

I ride a bike too , sv650S but tradin it in for a cbr1000rr next week , the rx-8 is very slow compared to sport bikes , dun bother making it go any faster, you got your bike to go fast lol. 0-60 is like 5.9-6.0 seconds for the rx-8 ... compared to our sport bikes doing 0-60 in 3 seconds and 1/4 mile in 10's , the rx-8 will never catch up. the rx-8 has allota air bags though , and its fun to go through corners.

I say skip the turbo, and get some coil overs and strut bars. No point making the rx-8 go fast, you already got a R1 or R6 to play with, the rx-8 will never be as fast as them, but its still fun to go tru corners

oh ya, and the mustangs, depends what model, the v6 we can smoke, v8's , depending on the driver and if its automatic .. watch out for those SVT's ... those will smoke us indefinitely. and the new ones with the V8 can beat us too, so stay away from those

edit :
oh ya, some advice about drag racing american V8's , dun bother for the most part, they gain horsepower like crazy from just intake and exhaust , my friend's camaro gained 40 hp to the wheels from just intake and exhaust and headers . Our cars gain like 2-3 horse power to the wheels from intake and exhaust... so thats why I say don't bother

Fanman 04-19-2005 07:11 PM

Greddy Turbo - Best price so far is over at Mazdaparts.com (gold pricing) & RX8store.net (but you must mention you are a member on this board). Both will get you around $2900. Massive gain in torque.

cretinx 04-19-2005 07:46 PM

Turbo the car and you will hang with those Mustangs you're talking about.

Otherwise, go intake/exhaust/midpipe/fuel management

spideRR 04-19-2005 09:23 PM

save the money and play on the bike. I just took the 8 through the twisties...it was fun, but my 600RR is much more fun. Nothing compares to draggin' a knee at Laguna Seca (see avatar) or Sears Point(infineon). Track days on the bike are a blast. I haven't tracked the 8 yet, but plan on in the next few months.

WestCoastFun 04-19-2005 09:41 PM

Mustangs may be a faster light to light car, as are many others. But anyone who loves driving, and has test driven the new mustangs, will tell you that the driveability of a car like the RX8 is infinitely better. There is no comparison in the curves, and from a pure fun to drive perspective the RX8 is one of the best platforms out there.
If you get into customizing the car - engine and suspension - you will really enjoy your RX8.

Good question.

It is hard to say, on the bike going 60 to 150mph in a twist of the wrist is amazing. Then with the car taking the corners has been great. I have had the car since September. Stored it till last week (detroit weather) and have had a blast. If anyone wants to donate money for new tires that would be great. So right now they are equal in "fun". But nothing can take from the speed of the bike and being able to wheelie. Or for that matter as SpidRR said, drag your knee in a corner. But if I HAD to get rid on one the car would go. If you like speed and cornering, you won't touch an r6 with the RX8. But the RX8 is such a sharp car.

Thanks to all that gave me suggestions. I know all about the SVT "cobra". They run through the motor city like water through Niagra. The boys from Michigan will tell ya. Anyone here just about is related to someone in the Big 3.

All in all it sucks when you are on a bike and the Cobras cower, then they see me in this and get all cocky with me. Maybe I should just get a trailer for the RX8 and pull the bikes behind it. Then they will know!!! JK Thanks again all

So all this conversation with a Detroiter and nobody thought to tell him about this guy also from the Detroit area who has this modded RX-8 on the verge of running high 12s, regularly trounces Mustangs, who would also let him drive it for himself? Y'all ought to be ashamed. :p Goat, p.m. me and we'll hookup this weekend out on Telegraph(weather permitting) and you can see me beat a couple of Evo8's, maybe an STi, and I'll even let you drive the car, nitrous and all.

I'd also be very happy to guide/help you in the modding process to save yourself some money on labor and worthless mods.

CRH

p.s. SVT Cobras don't scare me one bit.

Yeah, my wife is pregnant with our second child, and I just did the right thing and sold the bike...... now that the sun is out I AM DYING!!!!!! I miss my bike so much, that I plan to sink the entire $9K I got for my '04 GSXR into my RX-8 to try to compensate (and I have to ditch the cash or I'll end up with a new bike in a month, and be right back to slowly killing my wife with dread)...

I got this car because on the test drive, it performed a little like a bike... smooth acceleration, no engine knock, high revs, nice power, perfect control (about 1/2 the revs of a bike, but very nice for a car).... anyway, I have to say, there is nothing in the world like hitting a twisty at 120 and pulling the bike down until your pegs almost scrape on the road... nothing... :( but I hope to take refuge in my car until the kid goes off to college (or just turn into teenagers and stop liking me so much) and I decide to get another bike. In the question of what is better 2 wheels or 4... I am very sad to say, there is no comparison and 2 wheels will win out every time...

Hopefully, I can have SOME fun with the car though....

Fanman 04-21-2005 11:48 PM

Damn for $9K you would basically be able to get the whole enchilada. You could do this :

SSR/SFR Turbo : $5,000
Engine Mangement : $1300
Boost Controller : $300-$400
Upgraded Fuel Injectors : $300-$400
Cat back Exhaust : $700

Easily over 325+ whp

or

Greddy Turbo : $3,000
Boost Controller : $300-$400
Upgraded Fuel Injectors : $300-$400
Cat back Exhaust : $700
Set of SSR Competitions (reduce upsprung wght by 25 lbs): $2,000
Tein/JIC Coilovers/Various Companies Sway Bars : $2000

Getup to 300 whp.

At least if I had $9K that's what I would think about doing. Have a ball

FX-MAN 04-22-2005 12:27 AM

Only problem is that I really want the D1-GT veilside kit.... which is 3K on it's own... I am considering a GReddy turbo as well though... that would pretty much finishi up the 9K with the install cost (a kit is only a fraction of the cost of a turbo.. I got into this with my celica and a $3K "Bolt on" kit ended up being $6K total to get it running).

My thoughts are

B&B Exhaust
GReddy Turbo (if cost makes sense, on my celica it didn't in the end)
Veilside D1-GT kit
2 10" subs + Amp + Custom trunk box.

Then see what I have left. Is the GReddy turbo not a 100% bolt on? Do you need the boost controller and new injectors for a kit that only does 6lbs of boost?

AdictiveRx 04-22-2005 12:29 AM

Anyone who rides (me included) knows that NOTHING compares to a bike. Not even the twin supercharged lambo in my garage. I would take another bike any day over any car.
But thats just me

FX-MAN 04-22-2005 12:32 AM

Here Here..... the thing that kills me... is that a decent bike is like $4-5K, and an awesome bike will run you about $10K.... I get more fun out of that, than a $180,000 sports car, and if I had to choose to have for the rest of my life... I would STILL take the bike :)

My next bike WILL BE an Aprilla though.... going to go all out next round :) just need to wait about 15 years to do it :(

What's a D&D exhaust ? Anyways it sounds like you want to really handle corners well, so I would look at the suspesion, though the stock RX8 does handle very well. The Greddy turbo will not take $6K after installation. It is pretty plug & play, installation will be about $1000-$1200. If you are staying at the stock 7 psi of boost (goes down to 5 psi at the top) you are OK without the injectors & boost controller. Those are for if you are looking to get more hp/run more boost (to get the acceleration feeling even close to a bike. Standard Greddy will get most RX8's to about 240 whp, turning it up can push you to quite a bit more than that). So maybe look like this :

Greddy Turbo, Gauges & Installation : $4500
Veilside Body Kit : $3000
Cat back Exhaust : $700
Suspension (RB Springs, RB Sway Bars) & Installation : $1000

There you go around $9000 & you will have a pretty fast, very good handling car.
