Smooth As Butter ! New Ignition Coils & Twin Power
 
I have an 04' and one of the known issues that we have been having is the degradation of the ignition coils. Well I just put in a new set (4) of ignition coils, and I also had an HKS Twin Power ignition amplifier installed as well. I can say that acceleration & overall driveability has been much better. Just seems like acceleration through the gears is much smoother than before. In examining my old set of ignition coils I noticed a discoloration of the plastic on the top of the coils.

Yep I had all 4 coils to go bad on mine. But since replacement --no probs

Keep in mind brand new coils can also have what appears to be discoloration on the bottom. When my coils went, I don't think they burned through much, if at all. Nothing like what some other members had.

What's up Kevin ? I think I'm back to NA permanently. Just too many problems with the FI. Maybe somebody that has more time & desire to put into it, but I was just sick of all the reliability issues. I don't think I'm going to do too much more to it. maybe just a hi-flow cat. and the RB flash down the road.

Don't know what to tell you about this. To me it is. Just makes everyday driving much smoother, and the ignition coils/system is one of the known issues of this car. Also, In talking with you on the other thread you were interested in going hi hp on a turbo setup. This may very well help down the road as several of the high hp setups have had ignition issues. I do know that there are a few secret RX8's pushing high hp (325 whp+) that have been testing this unit to rectify certain issues, and it has helped them.


Are you using OE ignition coils?
Just a new set from onlinemazdaparts. In talking with Charles R. Hill Vivid has an upgraded set, but my experience with them in has been a bit spotty, and they are way more expensive. If I was pushing high boost I might think about upgrading, but my car is pretty much stock, with a few NA add ons.

Thanks brotha, you know what I went through with the Greddy setup. So far everything is cool.

I think the problem is to RX8's, but the problems were much more prevelant in the 04's. I believe they made upgraded OEM units, not sure what year it was.

there have been several coil part # revisions, if the '05 coils were fine they would have just kept them as the replacement part rather than offer something different

I have an 05, replaced my coils today. All 4 were burnt out with 50k miles.

Couldn't the ignition amplifier lead to coils burning out faster? I would consider stronger coils with an amplifier.

you'll get engine misfire CEL.

if it's your leading coils, you'll find it hard to drive, it will be jerky. Almost impossible to get moving from a dead stop smoothly. But keep in mind your coil can slowly go bad, getting worse and worse, so it doesn't always happen at once.

If it's the trailing coils, you aren't going to notice till upper rpms.

just curious... for your turbo, did you also upgrade the fuel pump, fuel lines and all the other stuff- i've been reading about- that have to be upgraded along-side to support FI? if so, were they ever able to figure out exactly what part failed that blew the engine? am just curious because i'm trying to learn more about it in general. thanks.

yep, that sounds about right. I have never had a leading misfire, but I have had a ton of trailing misfires. I am on my third set of coils, and third set of plugs, in 58K miles. Even at the upper RPM's, it is not really noticable as a lag, or stutter.

THE HKS Twin Power comes with a plug & play wiring harness for the RX-8, one end plugs into the wiring harness coil connections, the other plugs into the coils, another end plugs into HKS unit. It doesn't get any easier.

Still waiting on that coil deal :)

Depends on what you're doing. For the greddy kit, you're going to max out usually in the 260-290 whp range, and your oem fuel pump is fine for that.

I installed a new set of the revised coils on our Stock car and it is running very smoothly with just them. FOr those with idle problems the one thing to make sure is that all the clamp connections at the intake MAF & throttle body are tightly sealed, use a 10mm nut driver or socket on them rather than a screwdriver.

I bought the HKS unit for the STU car and intended to install it with the coils above along with modifying the harness for the direct battery ground wiring mod, but am holding off ordering another set of OE coils pending Okada's decision. I may get the HKS TP installed this weekend. The one thing I like about the HKS harness is it has the potential to allow relocating the coils to a new location, like right down by the sparkplugs ;)

could anyone recommend some ignition coils that they have used besides the OEM ones?? I'm trying to get the HKS amp but I want to upgrade the coils at the same time...I believe thats the reason I've been recently getting CEL lights randomly

my question is, will those $700 plasma coil set burn out like the OE coils do? I bet it would take longer for them to burn up, but eventually they might. If that's the case, unless you have a crap ton of spare money laying around, $700 for a new set of coils every 25k miles or less doesn't work too well.
On the other hand, with the HKS ignition amplifer, you might get ignition levels similar to the plasma coils, but at a lower overall cost, not to mention you use OE coils so when it's time to replace them it's $100 bucks like it usually would be anyways.
We need someone to be the ginuea-pig for these plasma coils and test 'em out :)
