Short SHifter??

I've browsed the forum recently to try get info on the Axial Flow Short Shifter. It seems that people really like this product, and I just wanted to get any further opinions on it. What I really want to know, which is kind of a stupid question, is if it's worth it?? I know it reduces shifting times, and mistakes, but seeing as though the 8 already has a pretty short shifter, is it that noticeable?? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

NgoRX8 07-05-2007 11:18 AM

it's very noticeable. my advice is depending on where you live, go to a meet and hope someone there has it to try out.

DarkBrew 07-05-2007 11:24 AM

Yes, it's noticeable every time you drive the car and worth every penny.

Jedi54 07-05-2007 12:17 PM

I had the same concerns before buying the Short Shifter. It's very noticeable and absolutely worth every penny.

Sorry it will not work on the 5 speed. We looked at that but never had a gearbox here to work with. Turns out it is similar to the Rx7 but not exactly. We sent one of our 7 shifters to our Euro distributor and it wasn't the same.

mcgregor129 07-06-2007 07:48 AM

thanks everyone for the comments, really encouraging to me to get one now! do forum members get any sort of discount by any chance?? and i have sat in a toyota mr2 spyder, which had an after market short shifter, and i presume it should feel about the same, you barely have to move your hand to change gears, s it the same case with the rx8 SS?

Jedi54 07-06-2007 10:52 AM

I think the best description I've heard for Richard's Short Shifter is that it's similar to a 'bolt action rifle'.
Where are you located? Maybe a local forum member has one that you could check out

dshiznit1489 07-06-2007 11:04 AM

o, its noticeable. my friend sent his car to the shop and the dumbass guy there thought it wasnt going into gear, so he violently jiggled it and broke a piece off the short shifter. LUCKILY my friend made it home w/o crashing, and thank god for the lifetime warranty.

california style 07-06-2007 11:25 AM

I had mine for three years, and I still go "oooh yeah!" when I change gear and then smile.

Its a great mod, and a DIY-able one too.

Jedi54 07-06-2007 11:44 AM

holy crap dshuznit: that guy must have yanked pretty freakin' hard on that shifter to break it! Luckily, Richard's customer service is top notch!

so there is no hope for me?

nikos_g 07-06-2007 01:30 PM

there must be a way...

i am doomed :-(

mcgregor129 07-06-2007 03:52 PM

is richard paul the guy who makes the Axial Flow short shifter?? or is that completely different?

Jedi54 07-06-2007 04:35 PM

Richard is the inventor of the Axial Flow Short Shifter (and currently working on a Super Charger for us)

laythor 07-06-2007 05:19 PM

If you bought the 8 because you like the sports car feel, the look and the fun... then buy the shifter. If you bought your 8 because they were all out of Speed3's... go with something else

In all seriousness, best bang for the buck mod you'll do to your car.

NgoRX8 07-06-2007 11:57 PM

yea, it's the mod that i'd ahve to say, i notice the most. haha.

AJ's Shinka 07-07-2007 01:34 AM

It is definitely worth it. The stock shifter feels "loose" compared to the RP SS. If you want a nice tight precise feel and want to become one with the car, this is the mod that bonds you to your car.

NavyShinka 07-11-2007 12:24 PM

My car car is in getting the throwout bearing replaced. This was the perfect time to have the shop put ia shifter in for me. Called RP yesterday and he is sending one out. It should be here today or tomorrow. RP actually answers his own phone. Great guy to talk to.

robel82 07-15-2007 01:24 AM

where can you get this short sifter? ive been looking all over but cant find it.

paulmasoner 07-15-2007 01:31 AM

start here

robel82 07-15-2007 01:48 AM

Thanks. I just ordered mine. Cant wait.

NgoRX8 07-15-2007 09:28 AM

you'll love it!

laythor 07-16-2007 11:05 AM

yule love it!

NavyShinka 07-21-2007 09:57 AM

I have had the shifter in for a week now. All I can say is this is not a mod you want, this is a mod you gotta have. The difference in feel has got to be experienced to be believed. You WILL love it!!!

Low23 07-21-2007 10:28 AM

Thought I would try here before I started another thread.

When I shift from 1st to 2nd, especially when I am hard shifting, it feels like there is a notch or "catch" mid way down (near the neutral position). Has anyone else noticed this or is it just mine?

What could this problem be and would the SS fix this problem.

BTW this is really annoying and really screws me over on my shifting time.

I don't know anything about the MR2, but I think it's very possible that your assumption would be incorrect. The RX-8 already comes stock with a short throw shifter. So for all I know the stock RX-8 feels like the MR2's aftermarket short throw shifter.

heyarnold69 07-21-2007 10:42 AM

Now I want one .. pout pout u giv now!

NgoRX8 07-21-2007 11:11 AM

how about you buy now ;)

VASasha 07-23-2007 02:28 PM

This is going to be my next purchase. I've been holding out for far too long.

Jedi54 07-23-2007 03:07 PM

you won't regret it Sasha.

VASasha 07-23-2007 03:08 PM

I need to install my Pulleys and Highflow cat before I buy anything else first.

J1MO7 04-25-2008 11:05 PM

damn thats expensive, any other places you can get it cheaper?

Richard Paul 05-02-2008 03:42 PM

Sorry, but we haven't raised the price in three years so it's gotta look cheaper now. Think about this: Mazdaspeed has one that was $400 when we started so is more now. But it doesn't give you the feel and is a pain in the ass to install.
Most competition Rx8's run ours even after buying the Mazdaspeed unit.
We really arent selling the shorter throw we are selling the "feel." The throw reduction is exactly the same as Mazdaspeed's. Everything else is better and less expensive plus warrenteed for as long as you own it. What else can I offer you? A 30 day return policy. You got it.

Consider that you can use it for years and still sell it for $200 on this forum!

You should go to a local meet and try one out; Then it won't seem so expensive.

lancer 05-26-2009 11:50 AM

just bought one like right now. after reading all those comments, I cant resist from it. I gotta have it. how long does it take to ship to Denver.(~|~)

Aphila 07-01-2013 11:39 AM

hey can someone send me a link to look at prices for a short shifter? I was debating wether to get an exhaust next but many people seem to like this better and the stock exhaust really isn't so bad. All I keep finding is shifter knobs and boot covers. Thanks new rx8 owner!
