s-afc unit

thinking about purchasing an apexi s-afc unit for my 8. Any opinions on whether this would be a good decision or not. This would be my first mod on my car, should I consider doing the basic mods first? All opinions welcomed. :D

PTPerformance 01-05-2004 11:15 AM

We put one on our shop car and baseline tuning got 9 hp on top of the 10 from intake.
we are planning on putting it back on the dyno to tune it for power
I will post some more numbers this week

slavearm 01-05-2004 03:49 PM

Its a pain if you are going to do it yoruself and really requires a bunch of effort and special configs.

WTF! Hello, of course you need to tune it for optimal power gains. And in no way is it a pain to install.

slavearm 01-06-2004 12:17 PM

Sniper,

Have you installed one in an 8? Perhaps I can allude to the pain in the arse it is. I wasn't talking about needing to tune it.

1. You only get 1/2 rpm signal beacuse you have to read it off the coil packs. Net result for an S-AFC user is that they only get 1/2 the granularity because the AFC has points every 500 rpm.

2. You have to get it to read the MAF PROPERLY. Good luck with that. There is no setting for the RX-8 from apexi yet, so you are completely on your own.

3. Knock sensor - ha ha ha ha. If you can find a way to make the SAFC work with the 8s knock sensor I will personally paypal you 5 dollars (provided you provide a how to so I can get it to work with mine).

Look I have installed a couple of these before, and the 8 is much more challenging. It's possible, but requires quite a bit more effort. I don't even think that apexi is going to support it on the 8 because of what a pain it is (at least they were 0% useful to me).

But if you are more content with making the assertion that I am an idiot, go for it.

pp13bnos 01-06-2004 12:25 PM

S-afc or the s-afc II? I have a S-afc sitting in my garage. Would be kinda neat to have a use for it. Atleast until a fully programable ecu hits the market.

PTperf. Whats your take on the input/output settings? What ones do you use? Also, what about the RPMs? CJ

sniper 01-07-2004 07:36 AM

Do none of the air input signals qork with the 8? There are a few different siganl setting types. If not then you can always set it up with map sensor. which is more accurate anyway.

The 1/2 rpm signal is also a setting issue within the unit. This happens time and time again. THings that Apex doesn't tell you but people do figure them out. BTW: the safc II has 200rpm increments.

Knock sensor? You don't need to hook up that feature as it doesn't work with 90% of vehicles when hooked up to the safc. If you want to monitor knock (which is a good thing) then you'll have to wait for someone to comeout witha program or set0up similar to a pocketlogger. Any tech heads out there?

Lastly I am not calling nor asserting that you are an idiot, but the way you make it sound was that is was a complete and total nightmare. You three issues can easily be figured out and corrected. And when you consider what it costs for an apex unit compared to the ever increasing price of canzoomers mod then the choice is obvious. Again because it is a new car and what a **little** more effort should be expected to get it in and working properly.

Just curious have you taken the unit out or are you still workin with it? If so, PM me and together we may work out your issues. Ya never know!

IZoomZoomI 01-08-2004 03:42 AM

so is it a preferable unit over canzoomers unit? what is the difference?

bureau13 01-08-2004 08:44 AM

Its tunable! That is both the good and the bad. If you want a plug-in-and-drive unit, get CZ's. If you want to spend hours and hours tweaking your tuning, but have the ability to tweak it further if you add more mods (and if you have a dyno or some way of measuring your results) get the S-AFC, E-Manage, etc.

I honestly dont remember right now what the settings are, I will check it and get back to you.
What are you asking about the RPM's?

pp13bnos 01-11-2004 09:37 AM

I was just wondering if there was a way to get around the problem of only picking up half the RPMs....that was all. It would be realy nice to have the input/output settings when you have the time. Thanks, CJ

Oh ok i see what your saying. We have ours reading right, I thought it was a matter of changing how many cylinders it was seeing. I cant remember, I will check that for you as well though

The input/output was 0/0 on hotwire.

I think we are going to put the car back on the dyno this week to see what kinda power we can get out if with some more tuning.
Last week we were just tuning it for driveability, so....

I will post up some pics of our products for the car this week.
We have an intake I think you guys will like as well as some other things like strut bars, etc...

pp13bnos 01-11-2004 09:45 PM

Thank you very much PTperf. And keep us updated on your products. :) When my single setup on my FD is finally finished, I'll be in the market for a intake on my 8.

CJ

you need an FD setup, we have plenty of those :D

PTPerformance 01-12-2004 10:27 AM

Here's some of some of our stuff
Our short ram intake IS still being procuded so the picture is not the final piece. The final peice will replace the factory TB coupling and noise filter .
We also have a CAI version.

PTP--so on the top 2 pics you would have to take off the bumper to clean the air filter?

Yea unfornately the only way to get acces to remove the filter, is to take the bumper off. You can still get to the filter, but the only way to take it off is to remove the bumper.

The short ram intake does come with the Heat shields.
I have some other pics of the short ram i will post up.

We are have many other things to offer as well.
We have Carbon covers for the engine compartment,
We have a front strut bar, As well as the Little mazda peices for the side vents, i dont know what you wanna call them.

We are also working on the turbo kit for this thing which should be done in a month or so.

pp13bnos 01-13-2004 08:42 AM

Thanks for the pics.

I'm getting close to installing the s-afc, and was wondering if the install is just as straight forward as it would be in other cars, or is there any special tricks you guys came across?

So its 0 input, 0 output on hot wire. I'm guessing you would either use 6cyl or 8cyl?

Also, does anyone know where there might be a factory wiring diagram on line or something along those lines? Thanks, CJ

PTPerformance 01-13-2004 09:15 AM

Look in the E-manage thread, all the wiring you need is in Maniacs Diagram, Use the Same pinouts if your somewhat familiar with doing AFC's

I think you can get online at Mazdas site, but its 20$ a day

pp13bnos 01-15-2004 09:18 PM

Hey PT, by chance did you ever look at what cyl. selection you had your s-afc on? I'm going to do a writeup on my install when I finish it. And I'll be shure to let everyone know that you and Maniac where the ones who made it possiable. Thanks, CJ

pp13bnos 01-15-2004 09:20 PM

BTW, I've installed it on my previous Rx-7 without any problems...so once I receive the wiring diagrams from Maniac I'm going to go for it. After the install, I'm going to take it to the dyno. Hopefully the 7th of feb. cJ

PTPerformance 01-15-2004 10:44 PM

We have ours set at 2cyl ^
If you have any others q's lemme know
I order the Manual from Maniac too and still havent recieved it?
hum......
The pics in his thread are what we used for the Install on the Emanage. We printed them out and went to work... It uses all the same wires cept for the knock, we dont have that hooked up

pp13bnos 01-16-2004 09:14 AM

I order the Manual from Maniac too and still havent recieved it?
No, I have'nt. Infact, I'm hoping to get it by tomorow. That way I can do the install while my wifes at work!

Her: What is this thing? Did'nt this come out of your old Rx-7??

Me: No. Came with the car. Infact it just sits in the glovebox.

Her: You're allready modifying things in MY CAR!!

Me: No, honey...please don't hit me...OWWW!....OWWWW!

Ok....now I'm just going to go back to my corner.:D
