RX8 hand held Flash tuner?

This post is strictly for informational purposes. I'm not trying to sell something or step on toes, just trying to figure out whether there's enough interest in a product that I'm working on...enough interest to continue development.

I'm part of a company that's working on a hand-held flash tuner for the RX-8's that actually can be completed and available relatively soon (Feb. 06) depending on whether there is market interest. This flash tuner would be designed to work with the Factory ECM. There would be no need for a stand alone unit. Is this a product that you feel is needed or wanted among RX8 owners? Is there interest out there for this type of product?
Its features should net additional power gains, raised limiters, allowing other modifications to function correctly (supercharger, nos, larger injectors, etc..).

Uhhmmm, YEAH. :ylsuper: :ylsuper: :ylsuper: :ylsuper: There's alot of interest. It'd be as big a seller as the xbox 360!!!

I already have an Interceptor for my turbo 8, but I paid a fairly high price. If you could make it affordable I would bet you'd have crazy business. Don't post any info on prices since it's against forum rules, unless you become a forum vendor.

I will officially welcome you to the forum, AND be the first on your waiting list!

HOWEVER....I doubt you can do it. :(

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to rain on your parade, and I could REALLY use the flash tuner you are working on, but the '8s ECU has proven to be a notoriously hard nut to crack.

Keep me posted!

welcome to the forums. Performance upgrades is in a high demand in this forum :). I be second in line if you have something like that coming out.

I don't know if this been answered or not but if japanese tuners can reflash ecus how is it that we can't do the same? A local owner here sent his ecu to japan and got it reflashed for his turbo setup, so I think it is completely doable.

carbonRX8 12-31-2005 11:16 AM

If I remember correctly, two companies have already cracked the ECU nut. They just arent doing anything about it.

Oh, and to answer your question, of course we want this. WHich makes me wonder if this is legit. If you have been working on the 8's ecu, youwould have been reading in this forum for a while and realized that we would want something. either this is bogus or will be another pettit supercharger, or Hymee, or PTP...or...sorry for this...axial.

If you can pull it off, you'll have quite the market. There are plenty of forced induction options coming that could use this capability. If you can really get it out by Feb, you should contact some of them. Not to mention the all motor people.

Anchorman Quote "More than anything in the world Ron!"

honestly that would own

hondasr4kids 12-31-2005 12:40 PM

Yeah, if you do a search, you will see that stock ECU tuning is hi in demand for the RX-8. You asking this, is almost a DUH!!!!!

dmp 12-31-2005 12:46 PM

If you charge a reasonable price, then sure. The $500 hand-held tuner for my wife's truck is a good example of a great product at a price which isn't artificially inflated like a lot of RX8 parts are...

Former A4'er 12-31-2005 01:02 PM

If the price is good!! Can you give more specific's?

MazdaManiac 12-31-2005 01:44 PM

Let me be the first to say:
:icon_bs:

Show us the other vehicles for which you have created this.
As mentioned above, there have been a few attempts and even one partial success story (Racing Beat) of diving into the factory PCM and they yeilded no useable results because the PCM was too complex for their reverse-engineering capabilities.

I would pay way into 4-digit-land for a device that allowed me to tinker with the factor PCM look-up tables, but you would have such monumental hurdles (just the anti-tamper coding alone will requre hundreds, if not thousands of hours of tinkering) to clear that it is unlikely your device will come to fruition.
Sorry.

Japan8 12-31-2005 01:44 PM

If you are talking about something like the unit by SCT, Sniper tuning or Diablosports... if the price is around $500 for a pre-programmed flasher and $600-800 for a fully programmable (set your own paramaters and maps)... then you would have a huge seller. This is exactly what the RX-8 community wants and needs. WITHOUT naming prices, what else can you tell us about you, your company and your product?

MazdaManiac 12-31-2005 01:49 PM

He is from PDQ Performance in central Florida. They sell the DiabloSport Predator and chips.

Fanman 12-31-2005 01:55 PM

Probably make that TWO companies. Vishnu Tuning, which uses the XEDE unit tried to get good results on the RX8 with their flash unit & got about 6-7 hp, and that was it. Not finanicially worth it.

Shiv didn't try to change the fuel curves and timing directly. All he did was work the airflow calculations like the piggyback devices do. The XEDE unit is an interceptor, not a EEPROM flasher. It does nothing to the PCM code directly.

kw1k 12-31-2005 02:05 PM

I would be interested in this product but i would need further info on it

JoeMamma 12-31-2005 02:19 PM

I think they could expect some genuine interest.

Especially from those who have been flashed (requested or not) and been unhappy with the results. Now, with the press of a button those problems can just go away.

It does have some definite appeal.

Nemesis8 12-31-2005 02:36 PM

I checked my calendar to make sure it was not April 1st :p:

olddragger 12-31-2005 03:43 PM

A flash unit?----sure. Thats great. But remember "standard maps" dont work well with our car. It seems each one has a mind of its own. BUT if it is cheap enough and can squeeze out just a few ponys (10?) maybe it would be worth it.

dannobre 12-31-2005 04:27 PM

What we really want is an inexpensive and full featured access program to the stock ECU lookup tables and the ability to change the setup parameters of the full range of data PID's

Especially the SDIAS timing

IE the ability to do full custom maps.... :D:

I know....just dreamin...just steal one of the factory engineers laptops....and copy the software :D: :D: :D:

MazdaManiac 12-31-2005 04:29 PM

^^ Yes, exactly.
This is sort of what the Diablo stuff does for Fords.
It is a whole other world for the RX-8.

Actually, I'm really suprised no one has managed to get hold of the stuff the Mazda engineers use.

therm8 12-31-2005 04:37 PM

Also keep in mind the 8 has multiple maps depending on what gear you're in :)

MazdaManiac 12-31-2005 04:39 PM

Actually, no it doesn't. It has timings for how long a particular load has been held.
They are the same MAPs with a 4th axis for time.

Fanman 12-31-2005 04:52 PM

Sorry, I meant a tunable unit, even if it doesn't directly flash the ECU (but thanks for the correction).

I guess the question would come is even with the flash, with the voltage irregularities on the stock MAF varying results on the stock ECU, wouldn't this also vary (even moreso) results with a ECU flashed car.

Ajax 12-31-2005 05:42 PM

This would be awesome if it were true.
I hope it is..

Looks like it's time to wait and see.
