RB Race exhaust v.2 vs HKS HiPower

First off, sorry if this is in the wrong spot. Also, ive tried searching and while theres topics about the Rev.8 exhaust, im looking into their v.2 of the single exit race exhaust. Of which i can't find any info on.

Im looking to change the exhaust note on my car, mainly for the wow factor i guess, and am willing to pay the cash for it.

Ive narrowed it down to either the HKS Hi power, or the v.2 RB race exhaust which has the muffler sideways and then exiting normally unlike the hks which is straight.

I am curious to hear what you guys have to say about the rb exhaust.

I currently have a Typhoon v2 intake, and a Agency power dual resonated exhaust. Ive gotten compliments from the exhaust note, from a few instructors at Willow Springs so im halfway to my goal lol.

I don't have that exhaust but I have decades of experience with RB products and they are first-rate construction. I've heard the first version of that race exhaust and thought "damn. That's way too loud" - except my REV8 catback is MUCH too quiet...so...

Best sounding exhaust for RX8, hands down, GReddy Catback.

I have the HKS Hi Power, single exit, paired with the BHR resonated midpipe.

Volume: slightly too loud for my taste, you will definitely be noticed on the street.

Tone: tone is OK below about 4k rpm, but above that it's simply glorious. It's almost a musical note at higher rpm. Never fails to make me smile. Sounds nice and deep at idle too, but with low throttle at low rpm I find it drones a bit.

I have gotten complements on how the car sounds.

Appearance: Single exit, so you'll have a hole on the right side. The blue tip looks pretty good, but the titanium has discolored (yellowed) a bit from the exhaust heat. Not a huge deal. The HKS is well designed such that it has not melted my exhaust shrouds at all.

Overall: I recommend the HKS Hi power, but of course RB does make excellent products.

I have been eyeing the HKS exhaust. It seems very nice, has a deep growl, at least from clips.

Hey DMP, you said you heard the 1st version, and said it was loud. By any chance have you heard the HKS to compare them somewhat?

So RB has a good reputation yhats for sure, my brothers old FC had dual RB mufflers, sounded very nice. HKS is no slouch either.

Ehh, theres a $100+ difference between them, i may end up going with the HKS.

Buy the less expensive one. Both companies are solid - and no, I haven't heard the HKS as far as I can recall. I've been around the RX8 scene for awhile, but been out of it a long time, too. Like...last I was into it, Pettit made SC kits for them - but now I can't figure out when or if they stopped! :)

We are running a Special on HKS products this month. We have the Hi power on RX8 and the exhaust note is addicting. see this thread

From my experience from years of research, I would like to add this. If you looking for power, HKS is a Japanese company that is more in-tuned towards quality+sound+some power. I would guess Racing beat was one of the first rx-8 performance companies, so(by the blessing of common sense) I would say they probably are more towards the dynamic of power output. Preferably I would go with HKS. They have yet to been surpassed even in japan when it comes to quality and performance. That is why they are back by so many Japanese Enduki. Remember, the Japanese where the first to really develop a culture when it comes to spirit driving. Spirit Driving is, what I'd like to call for Americans, driving like you just stole a car and are running from the cops with a bit of control I'd might add.

There is almost NO hp to be found in exhaust work for these cars; i consider the weight of the piece and sound quality.

Agree and disagree with your comment.

Yes, HKS is a power house in Japan and is a major player in the car tuning scene, but HKS focus has been on force induction application on mostly piston engines. The HKS GTR34, HKS S2000 and lastest, the HKS 86. I'm not sure the effort they dedicate to rotaries. From my limited exposure to the rotary scene in Japan; many rotary-only tuning companies like re-amemiya, famspeed, fujita engineering, panspeed, knightsport have 20+ years of experience tuning just rotaries.

Racing beat is in that category, from the info on their website, they were the company that developed the 'IMSA GTO RX-7' that won daytona 24 series in 1983 and also the company Mazda chose to develop their 3-rotor pp 20B for the Mazda Furai Concept before Top Gear crashed it.

The choice is up to the individual. If you get a HKS and don't like it, than get a Racing Beat. I've experience both and now have moved onto re-amemiya.

I'm in a somewhat similar situation. I currently run the HKS Hi-Power paired with the BHR mid-pipe and a TurboXS header and it sounds great. I've been considering on selling it though since it is way too loud; even with the silencer I put on, it is still loud enough to catch the popo's attention.

I was looking into the race exhaust by Racing Beat, judging from the sound clips I've watched... It is definitely quieter while retaining the benefits of a single-exit. But, I'm honestly just about getting over that look and kind of want to go back to a dual setup. I'm considering the TurboXS paired with the BHR or any other true 3" cat-back in the market that can provide a very aggressive note without getting pulled over while cruising...

Always love an unbiased affliction to JDM-yo .... :hahano:

there's a way to quiet down the hks significantly without hampering the exhaust flow negatively. Just search for one of my threads on the subject.

Just found the thread, amazing how much quieter the tone is with those inserts. I wish I knew about it before I bit the bullet on the 93mm silencer I currently have.

Isint the rb catback dual and the hks single? Cause I'm trying to figure out which perform better(weight difference aside)

lowen12 07-02-2015 02:28 AM

I don't have, but I know they are both single out.

hufflepuff 07-07-2016 09:21 AM

i am conservative, and like my HKS hi-power mated to stock header and midpipe. cruising is tolerable, and WOT is perfect volume for an enthusiast.

The RB Race catback is single. And not available last I heard.

Pretty sure the HKS Hi Power is discontinued too... HKS site only shows the LEGAMAX as available. I remember seeing threads with people crying about it. Pretty sure that was years ago.

hufflepuff 07-14-2016 04:49 AM

i got the HKS hi power recently (in may?) from HPT autosport for an amazing price.

Did they have any more of them?

JamesD31 07-26-2016 09:58 PM

I run TurboXS cat with BHR midpipe (soon to get the high flo cat put in to the BHR), but the sound is awesome.

I'll miss shooting flames, and it is pretty loud at full, but I drive around the city and it is pretty easy to keep the tone down if you drive it nicely around.

Im fresh to this!

jorx7 09-03-2016 09:40 AM

i have the rx8 single race exhaust and its only 20lbs 30% lighter than oem, its the dump pipe model, and sounds amazing if you feather throttle its actually quiet, but nice deep tone when your on it. not anoying loud like other exhausts, best purchase i did. look up my sig i posted video of it. i have full racing beat header silencer set up with cold airbox, plus bhr ignition upgrade, john

ybyrx8 11-07-2016 11:57 PM

I have the racing beat muffler paired with RB header and midpipe, the sound is so LOUD! Since mine is a track-only car so it is fine with me but driving on the street you really should be careful with your throttle. The weight of RB muffler is slightly over HKS one.

Appearance I prefer the RB muffler since it hides the tip within the rear bumper:)
