Radiator Upgrades?

Just curious...Anybody upgrade the radiator yet?

shelleys_man_06 07-02-2004 07:25 AM

What's wrong with the radiator that comes with the car?

mikeb 07-02-2004 02:47 PM

nothing is wrong with it
but people always upgrade

Vivid Racing changed out their radiator for one from PWR Racing in Australia...but I don't think it's available to the public yet...

I found that corksport.com is selling R Magic's radiator, but it's a little pricey at about $1k or so.

There's a mazdaspeed version. Link here.

I've seen just about every aftermarket radiator for this car (RE Amemiya, FEED, MS, etc.). Overall, they're all pretty much expensive, and not worth the trouble. Do radiators make more power? Since they're heat exchangers, maybe you'll increase the thermal efficiency by 0.03%. Didn't it used to be the norm to upgrade the radiator on the RX-7, especially the FD? I don't think the trend would follow here. First of all, there's no heat inducing turbochargers. Second, assuming you're not driving the mess out of your 8, if you're having cooling problems, I don't think an aftermarket radiator is a solution. Spend wisely :).

Yes, I have the PWR radiator in my ride. It's one of the first things we do to our cars because of the extream heat we deal with here in the desert. It helps keep the engine coolant temps moderate on the 110+ degree days. So far no problems what so ever. They should be available to the public soon. For those of you planning to run some form of forced induction down the road, you may want to consider it as an upgrade as trubos and superchargers will raise the engine temps and rotaries are notorious for high engine temps anyway. Also, since the car sees track time I felt it was a must. Better safe than sorry.

Are ideal radiators only supposed to lower the temperature of the coolant running through it? They're not suppose to drop the pressure, correct? What kind of radiator is the PWR? Is it a cross-flow or a down-flow? How many rows is it? Speaking of cooling systems, does anyone know the temperature at which the RX-8 thermostat opens?
