Problems with AEM intake

Hey has anyone had any problems with there AEM intake. When I data logged mine the MAF readings came out all chopy as they were inclining. Like the voltage would raise like 20 then drop 10 the up 20 then drop 10 and so on. Any help. thanks!

Did you make sure it isn't your MAF sensor itself?

DarthRX8 03-03-2009 10:38 AM

MAke sure the two screens inside the tube are fitted correctly. If they are not your MAF and AFRs will be off!

Oh, and don't ask me how I know this.....:banghead:

For the record I never yelled at you :lol2:

Between you and Jeff (who answered my emails almost immediately), my issue was taken care of quickly.

Looking back at my install I was in a hurry to get my intake back on so that I could enjoy my new ignition. I never thought that those screens could be dislodged so easily.

I was panicing left and right and had to leave work early so that I could fix my "grown-up kids" toy.:uhh:

Thank God you and Jeff are great customer service reps!:)

You can both take Saturday and Sunday off!

What two screens? The ones inside the piping

romycha1 03-04-2009 09:04 PM

Yes

One screen will actually work. I have one screen now. (I don't think I need to say what happened to the other screen :uhh:). And it works fine. Just make sure you have it installed correctly. And close to the MAF

Didn't someone test out with just one screen and there wasn't much to benefit?
I think the 2nd screen was nice just to better smooth out the air flow.
But like you said, move it close to the MAF and it should be fine.

damn i think this is my problem with my rough idle... recently just installed the AEM intake and i am experiencing idle dipping at full stop. i should recheck the screens

Jon316G 03-04-2009 10:30 PM

^That and clean the MAF

romycha1 03-04-2009 11:02 PM

How do you clean the MAF?

Remove the MAF housing from the intake.
Use MAF or electrical contact cleaner (can buy both at the local Auto store) and give the MAF wires a generous spray.
Let air dry before reinstalling (doesn't take long to evaporate).

Remember, the MAF is NOT the brown teardrop looking wire... that is the IAT sensor.
Up inside the housing you'll see two resistor wires, THAT is the MAF sensor

TRU5hot 04-14-2009 05:59 PM

Okay I know its really late but wow what a difference when I took off the screens. Is it okay that I removed both of them?

Razz1 04-14-2009 06:04 PM

No it is not.

TRU5hot 04-15-2009 08:34 PM

Why is it not okay

Jon316G 04-15-2009 08:43 PM

The screens are used to smooth the air flow and reduce turbulence across the MAF sensor

TRU5hot 04-15-2009 08:47 PM

But its causing the readings to chop

Jon316G 04-15-2009 08:48 PM

Are the screens damaged?

TRU5hot 04-15-2009 08:52 PM

nope

TRU5hot 04-15-2009 08:53 PM

So is it really THAT bad to leave them off or should I try and make one screen work

Jon316G 04-15-2009 08:54 PM

I'm curious, the AEM screens are integrated into the couplings.
How did you remove them?
Or are you just drawing in unfiltered air?

TRU5hot 04-15-2009 09:09 PM

No there is a filter on the tip at the very bottom but when the pipe breaks down into smaller peaces closer to the engine the screens sit in between two of the pipes. They come out easily.

1 Attachment(s)
I had the AEM for 2 years and never knew those screens just came out.
And just to verify the basics, you have the two couplers with screens just before the MAF housing and the reducer hump coupling at the very front?
Attachment 136998

Have you also tried cleaning the MAF with contact cleaner?

TRU5hot 04-15-2009 09:21 PM

Ill need to clean it to make sure that's not it. But having no screens is that much of a big deal
