PRM New Intake REVIEW!!!

Hello fellow club members!

http://www.prmracing.com

First off to get something clear, I am NOT paid for this (wish I was lol), I did NOT get this intake for free to write a review on it or anything of that sort. Any comments I make in my review are none bias, honest, truthful facts that I have found about this intake. I am NOT Mr. techie, I don't have tons of numbers and such from it, but I will review this intake as I see it, nothing more nothing less!

I was lucky enough to have the first production intake for the Rx8 from PRM. I was currently running MS CAI. It should be known I am from Toronto Canada so yes we have crappy winters, and warm enough summers.

The reasons I switched out my MS CAI. One reason (which really pissed me off) I was on the way to a huge meet/cruise, stopped by a car wash came out drove down the road and my car died. It was due to the MS CAI sucking up too much water. Yes I did have the sock on it. In the winters up here we have tons of salt, wet/snowy roads all the time. I was always worried about going thru a car wash again for the reason above. I was VERY tired of worrying about this and not being able to clean my car at least once a week....really...really...pissed me off.

Don't get me wrong I loved the MS CAI when it's nice out, on the track whatever, love the sound, throttle response, everything that one wants out of a CAI. I just couldn't go back to stock and needed something that is similar with less worry.

PRM (is Canadian btw) posted in the Canadian forum about their prototype. I did not prototype it, another member did. He came back with a great review of the product. I have read lots about other CAIs, and after the MS CAI none of them seem to fit what I want. The RB is a great option, but the sound isn't there that I want and cost a heck of a lot more, and the other ones just don't seem to be up to par for what I was looking for (MS CAI without the worry).

After looking at the design of PRM's it makes sense on how it would work, on how it would suck the cold air in, without worrying about getting soaked. As you can see below it is a very simple design that really seems to work!!

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h7...3/IMG_2187.jpg

Performance - what can I say...I freakin love it!! Like all other CAIs for the 8 it as well only produces 3.5-4whp via dyno on the prototype. Having direct comparison to the MS CAI, the PRM feels darn well the same, except it is feels smoother, throttle response is great (same as MS CAI) and sounds fukin mean when getting up in the RPMs. Sounds so much better than the MS CAI personally.

Also, there are no screens like in MS CAI or some other CAIs to cause you any problems if they aren't put in correctly etc.

But know (this is important) when traveling at cruising speeds RPMs around whatever 3k-35k it is quiet, none irritating at all! But you drop a gear or two WOT damn it's so nice. I have been getting so many more comments (no joke) that my car sounds like a race car or a jet. My accountant even told me this just yesterday :lol2:

A fellow member was behind me driving his car, driving under a bridge, I rev the shit out of it and he said it sounds awesome for one, but more true to the rotary sound.

I have had it on for about 2 or so weeks now, drove it hard when I could, not one CEL and ZERO problems. I truly love this intake and wish I had it before I bought the MS CAI, would have saved me a lot of headache and worrying.

Remember I am not a techy, I am giving fellow members my personal thoughts, feelings on this intake. Take it however you like (good or bad), but I really don't think you can go wrong with this intake!!

For others that do have it or get it feel free to post your comments up.

Here's a couple videos of it. Using my camera, so much better than it sounds here. Remember this is only the intake, I don't have an exhaust....Yet ;)

Running at 3500rpm you can hear how quiet it can be.

Cheers!!

It looks like shit. Is the filter cleanable?

fisherdn 04-06-2009 09:48 AM

Nice write up. Glad you're happy with it.

I am curious about the VFAD. I am assuming you left it in place? If so then I assume it continues to get air from the OEM cold air ducts. Interesting.

You said the sound in your opinion is better than MS, do you think it is louder or quieter?

Website says it can be cleaned with K&N cleaner and has instructions.

Hmm. Still looks bad though. $300.00!!!!! the universal kit is $139.00 i wonder if it could be made to work with the factory accordion tube.

LOL...never said it was the sexiest looking...but I like it better than many others out there. Yes you can clean it with K&N filter cleaner. The filter unscrews from the tub and you take it out and clean it.

Thx! Nope...since I had the MS CAI I had to take the VFAD out, and anyone getting this I would recommend the same, leaving WAY more air flow.

It is louder/more aggressive than MS when WOT. Otherwise the same at low rpm.

It may...but I wouldn't since the tube that comes with it helps hold it in place. Still cheaper than MANY other CAIs on the market!

the end is in the engine bay yeah? not thru the hole into the bumper area? then it can still suck hot air from the engine bay and is not a Cold Air intake. should have made it slightly longer so you had to insert it thru the grill slightly so all air was coming from out of the engine bay

yes...just before the hole...and you even having to ask shows you how close it is. I would have to agree with you on that one, even if it just fit inside the hole with some kind of seal around the tube, then it could ONLY get cold air. However with how close it is and the force of air that would be coming in, there would be little room for hot air to be sucked up. The RB air duct would be a great setup with this, forcing even more air at it.

Your temps are pretty hot in those vids.

Just sayin'.

HUH??? lol...dude that is normal running temp for an 8, just left of mid. The exact same temp as the MS CAI was on. If you are running any colder, your car is not running correctly and is probably working harder to keep your temp down. Check your thermostat cause if it's running colder than that you have probs.

hoss -05 04-06-2009 11:12 PM

Ha 9k you always make me laugh. Yeah sorry man I cant say I am a big fan but for each there own and if it makes you happy go with it! I once had a suspension that would make everyone but me cringe at its stiffness. Good Luck!

9krpmrx8 04-06-2009 11:22 PM

I just hate to see people waste there money even though it's not my money.

Might be the angle of the pics, they look almost halfway between mid and max. Mine run at or just under the mid normally.

How is it wasting ones money? You are one of those guys that even tho a performance part may not look the best to you, but produces the best you wouldn't buy it right?!?! :lol2: Your description says you are running the K&N drop in, so still have the fac box in...now to me that's ugly!! There is NO way this intake is a waste of money, for performance, sound etc. From other intakes I have looked into, this one is seems to be the least expensive, but definitely get the same results (or better in my opinion) than more expensive ones. If you don't like the look of it I can get that to each their own, but to make such a weak, uneducated statement speaks volumes of how open you really are to new products on the market. GL to u with that kind of attitude.

It's the angle wulf, that is where it is running (same as yours), thx for keepin an eye out tho :)

I don't have an attitude about it, I have been modding cars for many years and I mod slowly and carefully to get the best results. Every car I have owned as been modded in different ways and at different rates. If you wanna buy "fluff mods" that add no usable HP then that's your deal. The fact is that paying $300.00 + for an intake that produces no usable horsepower is stupid IMO. Paying $300.00 for an intake that produces no usable HP and looks like ass is retarded. At least the Revi looks good. RB duct + K&N drop in owns all other intakes.

I know people that have spent a few thousands in mods and are slower than me when time slips are handed out. Fact is the fastest lap timed 8 in our area is a WB with no power mods. Driving lessons and track time are the best mods you can get.

Oh, and paying $300.00 for something because it sounds cool is just gayness. Oh, and I have a K&N drop in for convenience, not power.

AH...so you are saying ALL intakes produced for the 8, not just picking on this one. If you specified that would have made more sense. I can completely appreciate the fact how you go about modding etc...everyone does it differently of course, and at different stages. They have been known to give SOME HP if any, but that goes to say for all of them. PPL are still buying them of course and my position was only to enlighten fellow members of my thoughts on this new intake.

" Driving lessons and track time are the best mods you can get." Absolutely!! agree 100% Cheers!

kersh4w 04-07-2009 01:35 PM

that is very similar to the sr motorsports one.
http://www.srmotorsports.com/RX8_Per...ake_Parts.html

but this one fails because it has no way to seal itself from the hot air of the engine bay.

honestly, a k&n drop-in and racing beat duct would have been cheaper and just as effective.

cornholio135 04-07-2009 04:34 PM

Here ya go.... similar solution but can be routed outside the engine bay for true cold air and only runs $45 off zbay...

9krpmrx8 04-07-2009 04:37 PM

There you go.

XDEEDUBBX 04-07-2009 05:43 PM

u should get about a 25 whp gain over stock.. =)

TeamRX8 04-07-2009 07:28 PM

IMO the canister OD is too small for this engine at high rpms

I had an 8" OD on mine, this one is only 5" OD, the inlet diameter is 3.5" OD

Haha just bought the last intake kit from the first batch. What a deal! Should be coming in next week, cant wait to put that bad boy on and make some noise!!! There will be a second batch in about a month or so with 20 kits. But I still have the second one ever in the US. What what!!

2wildbeta86 04-08-2009 03:13 PM

Hey thumper, i spoke to gerry yesterday and he didnt think it was a good idea to put RB duct along with his intake. Not really too sure why that wouldn't be a good idea. What you think? Also, did you remove the vfad when putting the intake on?

Personally...logically thinking I would, why the hell not, forces even more cold air into the hole/filter. I think you might notice the biggest difference with doing the RB duct would be on a track since it will be running that much hotter. It definitely couldn't hurt.

Since I had the MS CAI I had to remove it...but ABSOLUTELY remove it!!!! extra work, but having that in there would only reduce the amount of flow to the filter.

Blacknightz 04-09-2009 08:33 PM

bro... did gerry msgd u abt the PRM thingy being able to fit thru the hole in front at the bumper if fitted with an extra pipe?
