Porting RX-8?

How much and how long do you think porting an RX-8 would be? Would there be a sufficient amount of HP gain or would it be cheaper/easier to get a PTP/SSR/Greddy turbo whenever they came out (I know Greddy's is out)

lurch519 05-24-2005 04:57 PM

porting requires removing and disassembling the entire engine, porting it, then reassembling the motor and reinstalling it, several days at least. much labor, probably in the neighborhood of at least 2000. see moderate gains, maybe 25 horse.

greddy turbo kit takes about 12 hours to install, and can see gains of about 40 to 50 percent.

So do you suggest I port the engine first in order and then wait until my warranty is up to get a turbo? There is a local RX-7 here that has a turbo and ported engine, and first thing, that thing is VERY loud sorta sounds like a V8 throaty sound, and it's pushing around 500hp to the wheels. Very very quick car.

Porting will void your warranty too. Personally I always recommmend porting as the last thing you should ever do to your car as it is one of the most expensive for the amount of return. Don't even worry about it right now. Do everything else first and it last.

Diabolical RX8 05-24-2005 10:18 PM

Well if I had the $ to choose between porting and turbocharging. I would have to go with porting it first then buying a turbocharger later on.

But thats just what I would do. It is totally up to you though.

I agree with RG on this one. I'm all for making the engine as efficient as possible, but unless your 8 is a second car, and you can do the work yourself, porting is not worthwhile at this point IMO. Bang for buck, greddy turbo is still your best bet.

Nemesis8 05-24-2005 10:35 PM

I think there is work that can be done from seeing the engine down at Racing Beat. And then reading the work that Rotaryheads are doing is really cool. For $2550 you can get 9% gains...

Razz1 05-24-2005 10:42 PM

Well depends upon EPA and CARB certified.

Would a ported engine pass SMOG?

Yes, it's expensive, but then again you never have to remove the turbo for smog.

I've known shops that will not smog a car because the intercooler was on the car.

Even thogh components are disconected and they see them, some shops will fail the car on the visual test.

They know you are going to re-connect the turbo so they fail you.

After crushing Hussain's fluid mechanics course, best bet is to go with forced induction. Mass flow rate is your friend.

But if you port it first, you would be ported to NA spec - FI has different demands and requirements, so you'd have to report it again.

Putting the warranty issue aside, would you not get a better return on your FI if you port or rather polish the exaust ports? Would you not get more power out of it at the same boost?

rotarygod 05-26-2005 10:51 PM

Probably but remember that the Greddy kit is sized to work with the stock engine and not a ported one. It's not to say that it won't work with a ported engine but everything needs to be designed as a complete package.

devious12 05-26-2005 10:55 PM

No one has cracked into the greddy system yet?

slavearm 06-01-2005 05:26 PM

I would personally go FI then when you eventually blow your engine <Slavearm Ducks Behind a wall> get it ported while getting rebuilt. That way you don't pay to rebuild the engine twice =)

That's my plan anyways.

..

PS-I know as soon as I get FI... the boost will keep going up till I blow something. This may or may not be the case for everyone else.

RotorManiac 06-01-2005 07:04 PM

lolz :) you make it sound like its routine to you!
an engine blown a day keeps the mechanic away (oh well...)

Exactly, unless you have money to burn, it's not worth porting until you need a rebuild.

well i wanted to do a port polish job after i get my turbo. so with that said should i
a) wait for a company to make a low compression rotors then get it p and p. or
b) get it now. and if so what power gain in percentage would i be seeing.
rotory god have any suggestion. or anyone else if that. Im getting the P&P regardless.
the horse power im trying to get at is 500 or maybe 600 if possible.

StealthFox 06-21-2005 08:02 PM

d1gt, id like to do what your doing, port polish (maybe something like bp aux ports) lower compression, improve fueling, up the boost on a SFR/SSR or custom to get big HP
