Ok guys. I really need the experts on this one regarding Stage 3 chip

This is what I am about to get suckered into buying. It seems way too good to be true but I want a second opinion before i spend 300.00 on something that might ruin my engine. Please take a look at this and tell me wether or not this is rediculous.

http://www.rx8performancechip.com/Su...-Combo/544396/

I cannot find ANYTHING written about this chip. Maybe it was just released? But it's claiming 15-40 hp increase for the rx8. Please let me know what you guys think

No.

adamwzl 11-03-2010 01:23 PM

god this thread made my day.

DstrbdTech 11-03-2010 01:25 PM

Waste of money.

This just sends/overrides the original signals from the IAT and O2 Sensor readings and tricks the ecu into adjusting the air/fuel ratio. Not a true chip IMHO

This follows the same principle of O2 Simulators.

RIWWP 11-03-2010 01:26 PM

Sigh.

Another one.

Close the window and don't go searching for a chip again.

From my thread: https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-forum-197/new-potential-owners-start-here-202454/

Power Modifications:
From the factory, the 8 is VERY well tuned (mechanically). There are only 2 things you can do for easy power:
- AccessPORT custom tune to remove some of the "safe" parts of the tune (unavailable brand new as of July 31st 2010, used prices are already climbing)
- Removing the naturally restrictive catalytic converter.

Doing the rest of the common upgrades piston cars get (intake, exhaust, pulleys, etc...) nets you MAYBE 5hp. MAYBE. Depending on the brand, alot of them are inferior to the OEM stock system, and plenty cause you to lose power.

If you want power, you have to go forced induction, turbo or supercharger. And you need a starting amount of about $8,000 to $10,000 for a complete set up. If you find what you think is a "deal", please don't get fooled. If you spent $1,500 on your turbo system, you will still spend $8,000 to $10,000 in modifications, errors, swapping parts, getting stuff to finally work right, and probably an engine replacement along the way. If you dont have an AccessPORT, you have very little chance in making it work.

If you don't go that route, then the most you can expect is about 200 whp without a custom engine rebuild, which can run you several thousand. Spend $50k+ like race teams do ($30k ECU, hundreds of hours on the dyno with custom tune exhaust, really frequent engine rebuilds), and you can get to about 220whp. 222whp is the highest posted, and it was from a race team. (And no, Jedi54's 1,000hp dyno doesn't count, it was a software error in calculation)

Don't get fooled by any "chips", ebay or otherwise. There is no "chip" for the RX-8 that will do anything beneficial. The best you can hope for is nothing at all...a costly metallic sticker on your ECU. You can easily fry your ECU with one though, and that is $1,600+. The only flawless method of improving the ECU is through an AccessPORT. Hymee's ProTuner software and brick is also capable, but there are still bugs at the time of this post, and it is possible to wipe your ECU accidently. The piggybacks such as Interceptor-X and GReddy's E-Manager are terrible for the RX-8. You can get it to run, kinda. But you won't be making more power than stock.

Frostbytes89 11-03-2010 01:29 PM

haha! ok. i figured it was a bunch of bs. that needs to be illegal claiming that kind of crap like isnt that false advertising? noobs like me could actually pay for that and we coulda gotten more performance upgrade out of an air intake than that "chip"

Atilla 11-03-2010 01:33 PM

That performance chip gave me a reverse boner...

RIWWP 11-03-2010 01:34 PM

"False advertising" is a common thing out there. And it is illegal in the US, but since many of these places aren't in the US, well...not much our laws can do about it.

Stick with forum vendors here.

hehe thats why there are sites like this and a magical search button

Frostbytes89 11-03-2010 01:36 PM

will do, thanks a lot. glad i consulted the forum first haha. i knew there was something fishy when i did a search for the chip and found 8 links all sending to the same website. ill just take the 300 i woulda spent on that and grab an AEM intake :D

RIWWP 11-03-2010 01:36 PM

Heh

This made me LOL
http://www.yourhotcar.com/images/d_boost_dyno.gif

Nothing mentioning what the numbers on the left are, because they sure aren't HP or TQ and still be for the 8. Not to mention the stock curve is clearly not a rotary, the curve stops 1,000rpm short, etc etc etc

And then I read the text above it:

HOW CAN WE WARRANT SUCH SPECTACULAR RESULT?

We have to suppose that the operation of injection / ignition system is significantly determined on the signals of different sensors as IAT (Intake Air Temperature), ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature), AFM (Air Flow Meter) and OS (Oxygen sensor), therefore when we trick their signals we may regulate effectively engine output.
Stage 3 Surge/O2 Combo arranges advance air/fuel ratio, consequently you can use your vehicle as a race car.

RIWWP 11-03-2010 01:39 PM

OP, if you really want a better tune out of your 8, there is only 1 safe way to do it, and that is getting an AccessPORT + either MazdaManiac's tuning calibration service or AccessPORT + a shop that actually knows BOTH MAF based tuning and AccessPORT tuning.

No other option.

Frostbytes89 11-03-2010 01:45 PM

well i got a lot of research to do then :D I eventually wann aknow my car inside and out. Been looking for like a haynes auto maunual for the rx8 but they dont make one. In fact i cannot find any one place that has like a book i can read that will tell me everything about how the whole car works and all the parts etc. but they make plenty of books on the rx 7 :(

DstrbdTech 11-03-2010 01:45 PM

I gave up on it at the following points

•You can set the preferred higher air/fule ratio than the stoichiometric fuel mix
-where? theres nothing on that resistor to plug into to set anything.
•Unit is not a simple resistor
-Yes it is....with an LED glued to it.
•Results higher top speed
-How no limiter is removed adding this 'chip'
•Immediate effect even during driving, no ECU learning period
-Of course not, your engines going wtf is wrong with me and trying to fix itself on the spot.
•Bright red light design
-Really? That's your selling point.

This is your book right here. This site.

This community has more collective knowledge about the 8 than any other location or person in the world. I have the RX-8 book from Mazda, and there is even stuff wrong in there.

The thread that I linked earlier was written for people like you as a baseline starting point, so if you haven't read it yet, go do so. https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=202454

and thank you too :D this forum is amazing! cant wait to dig into all of this!

paulmasoner 11-03-2010 08:03 PM

Fow what its worth, modifying the signal sent from the IAT is a very legitimate mod on some cars IF its done right. You cant throw a resistor in the line and call it good. you need another air temp sensor and a small circuit and you can easily alter fuel by a set % across the board... I've just never seen it done on cars, only motorcycles

Pstone 11-04-2010 02:57 PM

My previous car was a ford zx2. A big thing in that community was to splice in an adjustable resistor into the IAT wiring. It dyno'd on many cars at making 10+whp. Not bad for $5 worth of radio shack parts and some soldering. Instead of spending $300 for one with a red led, just build your own and tell us how it works:)

paulmasoner 11-04-2010 07:18 PM

^^ adjustable resistance is exactly what i am referring to, but to build a proper one would require a decent level of electrical engineering knowledge as you'll need some sort of logic circuit, analog or digital

TeamRX8 11-04-2010 08:21 PM

less posting, more searching and reading ...
